On an iPad the trick in Safari is to click “request desktop version.” It doesn’t even have to be the “world’s best iOS tablet”, just has to use iOS 14.x.

(Don’t ask me how I got there!) The key to making the contract was my being able to ruff out the K and Q of hearts. West led a diamond which his partner took with the Ace and shifted to a club return. After I took the club ace, played AH and ruffed two hearts (using diamonds for transportation), I threw my losing spade on dummy’s KD. West trumped small...and...played the Ace of spades??? Here was the exact position: [hv=pc=n&s=shj7dck532&w=sa762hkdcq&n=st843hdjcj&e=shdc]399|300[/hv] How can a program simulating card holdings, which is also programmed to trust my bidding, make an error like that? Playing its last trump (sure it’s the queen, but so what?) spoils my last ruff and costs nothing if I have a second spade instead of a fifth club. A head scratcher for sure!

With respect, you’ve only answered the first of my questions, and nothing about what happens to these hands when they go into and through the Deal Pool. The first may be called generation, and the rest of the questions have to do with what may be called “curation, selection, culling,” or whatnot.
-
I don’t know about casual table hands, but I’ve seen these threads come up (and even started one) about Deal Pool, — what it is, how it works — and it is only ever vaguely explained as an “anti cheating measure.” Until there’s a specific explanation of how the hands are generated, whether an algorithm is employed at any stage to winnow the pool, whether different pools exist for different types of tournaments, etc, it is only natural that folks will continue to wonder. Are they used in challenges? Are they used when playing anonymously? Only daylongs? I understand wanting to foil cheaters, but I also would like, one time, for someone to say, definitively and transparently, that there is no “secret sauce” of any kind applied to to make the hands anything other than 100% random.

What is the difference between right and wrong?
mythdoc replied to pilowsky's topic in The Water Cooler
So many dubious statements crammed into one small paragraph. Most are easily disproved or forced by Socratic method to be amended in large part. To me, the least convincing of them is “everyone thinks they are right.” Paying close attention to what other humans have said to each other and done to each other for decades, I feel sure this is incorrect about all people some of the time, and many people much of the time. What I am referring to is ignoring the little voice inside that says “this is wrong,” all the time insisting to others that it is right. It makes me wonder how anybody sleeps soundly at night. Oh yeah, the use of sleeping pills is skyrocketing in society today... -

I’m not surprised that both robots qualified, for a few reasons, but I’ll share this experience: having played relatively few challenges, and being relatively new to BBO, I played a LOT of practice boards against GIB, in an effort to discern whether aggressive bidding and/or psyching could be turned to advantage. I found that (with the exception of a few hand types) it was counterproductive to do either. For instance, GIB’s preempts tend to be very solid — much more solid than the style my partner and I play. I found that making a weaker preempt (again, with exceptions) tended to backfire because robot pard’s next bid was so unpredictable. Non best hand format I found to be thoroughly enjoyable, though I still can’t believe the ratio of boards that led to games vs. part scores. Random distribution let’s say. I think I only had one round out of 10 where I felt that there was the expected number of part scores per round. -
dumbest hand I will ever have
mythdoc replied to crapdown4's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
It sounds like one of two things happened. Either RHO doubled at your table, instead of bidding 3H like at other tables, and that is why you got a top. Or, more likely, the bidding at other tables went 2S-X-5C-X-P-5H putting your seat on lead where there is no chance to set the contract. Either way, I agree with Felicity what your better choice was, even though passing worked better this time. -
