Stephen has referred you to the GIB system notes which are extremely helpful. Here is a link to the same sort of thing in 'convention card' format if that is what you meant https://usbf.org/docs/2019msjusbc/acblcards/LeffAbadiotakis.pdf It's worth remembering that when you play in an instant tournament you always have the best hand. But your partner does not. Your partner always has fewer HCP than you never more. Always remember that. Although they might have great shape. On BBO it's a bit like heaven. You always get the best hand, but you still have to play it better than everyone else. If you want to get bad hands, you need to pay extra and join the prime area. In the prime area you will get dealt rotten hands all the time. Which is quite good practice. Of course, you can import hands that have specific shapes - described elsewhere in the Forum - and use the teaching table to practice with them. Some people say that robots are 'buggy' and do 'silly' things. Clearly, this comment is intended to be meant relative to your average human partner who is perfect, knows all of your bids, even the wrong ones, will never make a mistake, always finds overtricks and makes you coffee in the morning before making the bed and going off to work.

Thanks, question answered.

Speaking of US music politics and Bridge all in one sentence, how about Standard American: real Trump music
-
Which is fine if you want to ride in a horse and buggy instead of having a smooth ride in an easy to use learning machine which is what you get for a few dollars more by combining prime with playbridge and taking a few minutes to work out how to use them. And you do not need any knowledge of coding, And you get advanced robots, And you get to do all the other stuff mentioned previously.

What Peter Navarro has is a surname and a salary. Not sure about cherdano's quaifcations
-
cherdano, do you have any actual qualifications? or, like Peter Navarro, are you just making this stuff up as you go along?

I am going to begin this thread with a few ideas. The central theme is that pretty much everything is the same: including thinking. Can we model thinking and social interaction in the same way that we model flow or electricity? What might the implications be for game theory? I am not a systems engineer, so I thought I would throw this idea out here and see what you guys make of it. This kind of idea is, I believe, the reason why games such as Chess, Bridge, Go and so on are so popular with Doctors, Physicists, Engineers and so on. It is because the laws that govern them are all exactly the same. I call this the 'equation of life'. I am not the first to do so. This equation will be familiar to all of you, but it goes by many different names. I'll use Poiseuille's law. I have used this equation to educate students about the nervous system, but it works for electricity (Ohm's law) and lots of other things. Wherever there is flow and resistance, this law applies. It works with education as well. Poiseuille's law looks like this http://www.calculatoredge.com/new/poiseuille.htm Volume per second= (pi* pressure difference * radius 4)/(8 * viscosity * length) Of course, there has to be a pump to create the pressure difference and push the volume through the tube. It's the same with thinking. A person can become competent at just about anything, but only to the extent that their cupboard can be filled to a certain extent, not leak, associate k's (k= 1 element of knowledge - see below), use them appropriately and quickly enough. A person may be distracted, by television, alcohol, anything. With people there is more to it. There is social interaction to factor in. Let us assign confidence 'Con' a scale 1-100 and competency 'Com' 1-100. Therefore somebody who is 100% confident and 100% competent will score Com/Con 1 on the CCR scale for a given 'k' of knowledge. A person who is all Confidence but no Competence scores 1. Somebody with no confidence but who is completely competent scores also scores 1. The CCR ratio provides the Observer 'O' with a tool for assessing the competence of another person with respect to their knowledge. So, an observer needs to work out what it is that they are trying to assess. The assessment problem is not the issue here. The question here is how does a single individual acquire 'k's. If you want a more significant problem: create a partnership. Still, the observer can be misled—a sort of social Heisenberg principle, perhaps. The reason for being misled is that the total expectations 'E' can be inflated or deflated by the confidence of the person; and also by the total confidence of the Observer. This is the reason that each of the scales starts at 1. Take the 15 point Glasgow coma scale. This excellent tool allows emergency room Doctors to assess how close to death you are. It has three axes they all begin with 1. You can show up dead, and you still score 3. Even Trump would score 3. As Dorothy Parker said (I know, ascribed to others) when told of Calvin Coolidge's death "How can they tell?" - the answer, a GCR of 3. You can't divide by 0. That's why they start at 1. This only accounts for competency at a single quantum of knowledge k. Since this is a Bridge forum, let's look at Bridge. Bridge is a great example of an 'equilibrium game'. Effectively it combines the Four-colour map problem with Sodoku. At the same time, in a tournament, it involves transactions with four people in a broader social group. The total amount of knowledge in a field (eg Bridge) is K. Each k is associated with an e (error) because as the Persians say "only God is perfect" - everyone and everything makes mistakes. That's where thermodynamics comes into it. Setting that aside. A person is not a robot. A robot is a machine that by definition does not make errors unless it is programmed to make errors. Error is a human feature. The maximum amount of knowledge in a field is K. This means that an individual can strive to learn K-x. An individual area of competence is a k. Take Bridge as an example. The fact that an Ace is valued at 4 HCP is a 'k'. The capacity of an individual to learn, retain, access, and appropriately use. each k, determines their individual level of Com. There are other factors. An individual must be able to move the K that they have around, associate it with other k's as they experience new k's and then produce an appropriate output. An individual can only store so many k's. It depends how big their cupboard is, how fast they can access the items in it, how quickly they can associate one k with another, and what they can do with the result. Also, their 'cupboard' may leak. In physics, this is how capacitors work. Think of a computer drive that might decay. In face to face Bridge, it's even harder because you are working with another human who is also error-prone. Humans differ from machines in two critical ways. First, we have an association cortex. We can take several k's, join them together and create a new k that nobody has ever thought of. Robots cannot do this. That is why there is no such thing as 'artificial intelligence'. That process of association enables humans to produce new k's is called knowledge generation. It could be unique to humans. It may occur in some animals. This is currently unknown. Robots definitely cannot do it. Secondly, we can impart our newly gained, or created, knowledge to others. The others do not have to be human. For example, we can train a robot to perform a finesse. The robot cannot walk up to a human and say "hey would you like to learn how to do a finesse?". But, I can say to someone that I have made a machine that does something and if you practice with it you may learn something to your advantage. Exactly the same thing happens when someone writes a book. Why people complain about robots but not books is a mystery to me. At least that's what I think.

Leading an unsupported ace vs. a suit contract
pilowsky replied to Wainfleet's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
♠I'll let you know in exactly 60 minutes, but at the moment I'm sitting on 61.1% for this hand, but 30.46% for the whole tourney. Sucks to be me. 30 minutes later. Of course, I'm always wrong. I should have doubled or bid 4♠. Here's the full deal [hv=pc=n&s=sa9754hk8da6ca952&w=sthqj543dq72ck863&n=sj862h9dk9843ct74&e=skq3hat762djt5cqj&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=p1h1s4hppp]399|300[/hv] Here's what happened Here's the best contract Turns out that the best option was to be Declarer. -
I thought you were going to mention this one !

And then sometimes you get these hands [hv=pc=n&s=sa9754hk8da6ca952&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=p1h1s4hppp]133|200[/hv] Well, I haven't been playing that long but despite what the man that said "Don't bang down your Aces Son" said. Guess what I did. -
I'm with you on this one. I once sat next to the Democratic congressman from California on a flight to LA. It was United, I was window, he was in the aisle. He was reading that kind of right-wing stuff. When I asked him if he was a Republican he explained that he liked to keep track of the opposition. His name was Howard Berman. He told me they called him the representative for Hollywood. It must be him - it's in Wikipedia! ("...the representative from Hollywood."[39]) I tune into different parts of the political spectrum to make sure that I am aware of what disinformation is being propagated. Fox 'news' has been gaslighting since Murdoch's grandfather Keith sent CEW Bean over to the fields of WWI to undermine General Monash - Australia's legendary Jewish hero of the battle of Hamel. The Murdoch family has not stopped pumping out antisemitic lies, conspiracy theories and white supremacist nonsense since that time. There is a well-known bumper sticker here - "is it true- or did you read it in the Telegraph". One of his papers was called "the Truth" My all-time favourite piece of newspeak. Right up there with every country that inserts the word 'democratic' into its name - or 'republic' for that matter. You have to wonder if they are trying a little hard when they put democratic or republic in their name. It's no surprise to me that the United States took Murdoch on as a citizen. Along with Werner von Braun and all the others. It seems like the accumulation of wealth no matter where it came from is the central creed of the USA. No surprise that their grip on politics is so incoherent and rife with conspiracy theories. No surprise that hope and prayer play such a large part in their planning for the future.

That's a great idea Pannetski I started a thread under "suggestions for the software" https://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/83342-prime-club/page__p__1001704__hl__prime__fromsearch__1?do=findComment&comment=1001704 You may want to add your idea there - along with any other thoughts.

No, Shyams is attempting to abuse me. smerriman, who makes a point of checking other peoples prose, once commented that my posts would be improved if I used more paragraphs. I agreed. Shyams thinks that he is being clever. At least, I think that's what is going on. It can be difficult to tell. Are you clever Shyams? Say something clever for us.

I know right you do have Stephen to blame

Patronage! Seriously? Now you notice? I am famous for being scornful. Sarcasm is my metier, Like the other Dinsdale I am well-known as a master of litotes and aposiopesis, but give me a break. NOW you notice. with 100 days to go. Anyway, Barron will probably replace Pence as the VP nominee on the ticket. Oh, I'm sorry - I mentioned a minor child - well pardon me. Will the Trump family recover from the devastation. Trump that.
-
I agree, unfortunately for the average person - by which I mean people that do not have vast amounts of money like Trump and DeVos - these two are not 'ignoring reality'. I will set aside my resolution not to characterise people for just a moment. Trump is completely clueless. An intelligent thought has never crossed what passes for a mind in his entire life. The only thing that Trump thinks about is Trump. If you have a Dog or a two-year old child then you can understand Trump. Trump is easy. DeVos and the rich ones are different. They only care about money. But they are cunning - like *****-house rats. They want schools to open so that the slaves can go back to work for them and earn money for them. If the slaves die they will just get other slaves. They don't care about you or me or anything else. Their children do not go to school. Their children stay at home safely. They vote by mail. They are the scum of the earth. OK, back to normal now.

Would appreciate if Prime members could bring a guest
pilowsky replied to adriennek's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Prime members can definitely bring a friend. Set up a table. There are 5 types of table in the Prime area. Invite your friend in the usual way. But, I recall that there was a problem for a short period when I was unable to invite friends. This was odd. I did not report it to "support" because "support" has not been very supportive in my experience. The problem eventually went away after a few weeks. Secondly, the invitation can sometimes vanish from your partner's screen. This is a software bug that BBO has not fixed and does not seem to care about. -
You are not alone. He gained this qualification in Australia.

Problems arise when people that do not understand how biology works get a piece of information like this and think: Asymptomatic with the virus - less contagious - wear a mask - no problem. WRONG - are you familiar with typhoid mary? the broad st pump, undercooked burger meat? Just because something LOOKS OK does not mean that it is OK some people can be super-spreaders with no symptoms at all the water may not be safe to drink the food might taste good but make you sick Wake up and smell the roses. Don't get buried 6 feet under them.

That's a great story Ken, but it was a long time ago. Thinking back is it really likely that you learned to read in School immediately on the day that you arrived at school as a five-year-old? Surely as a middle-class Jewish boy like me - and btw - your written voice is strikingly similar to that of my Zeide's memoirs - it seems more likely that you were taught by your parents at home. The Goys showed you the Merry Christmas sign and made a big deal of it. I was also forced to write a Christmas book when I was six years old in Sheffield England, my vowels and handwriting are still tortured from the experience. Ah still play on road. With won of ma frends. I made a lot of great friends at school and I learned all sorts of things. But, Learning is an ACTIVE process - you do it. The other people around you may help; whoever, wherever doesn't matter. I suggest that the more of them and the more varied the better. Some helpers are better at it than others because they understand the "fully imagined audience", and they know their art well. and they have an enormous 'capacity', and a lot of other things. I have met a few of those people. They are extremely rare. Most people achieve it very briefly. It's like winning a Nobel or coming 1st in the Super Sunday. When you do it and see the look of amazement on students faces as they understand a concept that was a mystery to them before, the satisfaction is indescribable. Richard Feynman speaks of the moment in his book when he realises that he suddenly knows something that nobody living or dead has ever known before. That's why I became a scientist instead of making money.

Unfortunately, sometimes people are rude or abusive. Instead of 'ignoring' these people I now 'Follow' them and make a notation next to there name about what happened. A second good reason for the Follow function is that you may want to follow an excellent player so that you can Kibbitz them when they are online. Directors may want to Friend you so that they can pick you as a sub. You can always choose to play anonymously if you want to. I would be opposed to changing the current system.

Well it doesn't matter any more because Lord Trump and Queen De Vos just announced that: As coronavirus cases surge across the country, President Donald Trump is ramping up his push for schools to open for in-person instruction in the fall following weeks of downplaying the risks of children spreading the virus."Every district should be actively making preparations to open," Trump said at Thursday's coronavirus-focused press conference. "This is about something very, very important. This is not about politics." But Trump and Cabinet officials like Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have made several misleading claims in their pitch to reopen schools, with DeVos even claiming that children are "stoppers" of the virus, despite health officials saying there’s no evidence of that. On the question of whether kids spread the virus less than adults, task force Drs. Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci have cautioned that the issue needs more study before drawing conclusions. By the way, did I mention my theory that Donald Trump has no brains at all above the spinal cord?

You're right! Boy, there's going to be trouble when East gets West home tonight. There'll be a cold wind blowing for sure.

Does that mean that perhaps nobody agrees with smerriman?
