[hv=d=n&n=sajxhaxdakjxxxcxx&s=sxxhkjxxxdqxcqt9x]133|200|Scoring: IMP 1d-1h 3d-3h 4h-p[/hv] We played very bad 4h instead of 3nt... Where is the mistake? Would you bid 3nt as south without spade stopper? Would't you bid 4h with Ax?

I don't know what is the best here. But I remeber two general rules we use. -When opponents bid two suits we use them to show our suits and strong hand. e.g. 1s-2nt(minors)-? 3c are heards and strong hand, 3d show spade fit, 3h and 3s is passable. -When GF was made pass is forcing. Does any of them apply here? And what does dbl. show now?

Very nice. Safety one down:) But if both minor queens had west you would be only one who made only 8 tricks.

defensive bidding against NT
mila85 replied to aisha759's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I don't like bidding over 1nt with anything. I prefer normal score than randomize the board. I play DONT over strong nt but I rarely bid with 5-4 and never with 4-4. I played CAPP over weak nt. I prefer to pass with a lot of hands and bid more precise with the others. This is why I switched 2c and 2d in CAPP. I can't bid with every hand with diamonds but I can ask which major is better and I'm in better position when responder bids. This is also why I don't like DONT. (1nt-2c-p-? What do you bid with Q Qxxx Qxxxx Qxx?) I remember I played with unknown partner. He doubled strong 1nt in balancing seat. Because we didn't discussed it I passed it as natural. Down two in red was +500 and very good result. I wanted to play penalty dbl. in this position with my regular parner. Then I saw the movie. 1nt-p-p-dbl. p - p - 2d - all pass This was frequent bidding. Made +1 and -110 instead of +200. -
In a lot of sequences is one of partners a 'boss.' 1nt-p-2nt-p ? Responder is a boss here. I opened and I described my hand very well. I accept with maximum and pass with minimum. No problem. 1s-p-2s-p ? Opener is a boss. I use 3cdh as invit. Partner with minimal hand bid 3s with maximum 4s. With avarage hand must downgrade or upgrade - he knows how the hands go together. Opener can bid more agressive vul. at imp but it's only his problem. p-p-4s We don't have an agreement how strong 4s shoud be. Opener is a boss here. His partner is well described by initial pass. .....

I play weak 1nt and I must say that penalty double is not a wasted bid. I'm always afraid of -500 or -800. (where -110 is normal score) :) And if you have penalty dbl. all your other bids are limited.

1. ????? If my partner has normal 3h overcall opps have 10+ spade fit and only one heard. Is it possible? Can rho have 6 spades for his double? Can he have 5 spades? I wouldn't ever double with 5 spades and singeton or void in heards. Can lho have 6 spades? Can he have 5 spades? I think that 6-5 distribution (lho) and dbl. with five spades and short heards (rho) is less likely than 'tactical' 3h by partner. I bid 4h. btw Trust your partner:) 2. dbl. I don't like passing with 19 hcp. 3. 4c or 3h. I don't want to play 3cx. 4. Not my problem. I open weak nt. 5. 6nt. 3d shows 15+ hcp.

I like the idea of transfer preempts but I don't like that the strong two suiter is without transfered suit. xxxx xx Kxxxx Kx After normal 3d opening (with or without overcall) I simply bid 5d. I think that this is one of biggest advantages of preempts. If your partner opens 3c (preempt in diamonds or two suiter with clubs) you can't bid 5d. Partner will very often have strong club-heard two suiter. If 3c opening promisses diamonds I can effectively preempt by 5d. Opener can with strong hand bid his other suit - 6d shoud be ok... The other thing I don't like is that with club preempt you open 2nt. Axxx Kxx Axx Qxx After normal 3c opening (7cards, two top honours) I bid 100% 3nt. After 2nt opening 3nt depends on position of heard ace. Right-side 3nt is much more useful that right-side 3c. What do you think about this scheme? (The main idea is from Garozzo's Ambra) 2c:23+bal or GF without 5c major 2d:heards, weak two or strong 2h:same with spades 2s:club preempt or strong two suiter with clubs 2nt:21-22 BAL 3c:good diamond preempt or strong two suiter with diamonds 3d:bad diamond preempt 3h+:normal 2s-2nt is inv - bid 3nt with two top honours After 2h-2s/ pass..weak two 2nt....strong two (3c,3d,3h show shortness-inv+) 3c,d,h..5-4 GF 3s.......very very good spades, GF 3NT.....25+BAL 5s332 After 2d-2h 2s......5+-4 GF 3s......5+-5+ GF other as after 2h-2s After 2c 2d....relay 2h....5+spades 2s.....5+heards 2nt,3c...6+minor, transfer 3d+......??? 2c-2d: 2h.....5+m-4h or 4441 with black singleton or 5440. 2s......5+m-4s or 4441 with red singleton 2nt.....23-24 BAL 3m.....6+cards, without 4c M, GF 3M......?? 3nt......25+BAL, without 5c M

It's easy to bid 3d-6d. But... I wouldn't open 3d. It promisses two top honours. If my partner opens 3d I would bid 6d too. Because I don't have better methods :D xx xxx AJTxxxx Q 5d depends on spade finesse. It's not only about counting tricks. 100% agree Would you open 1st seat 3d without AKQ? I wouldn't. I don't need to ask for KC. Would you bid 7d if the answer was 1 king? Imagine spade king in a hand I posted. How do you bid this hand if you don't open 3d? p-1d ? Do you bid splinters with passed hand? Do you bid 2d or 3d? (Playing inverted minor and not playing inv minor) Does anybody bid 5d?

Hmmmm.. Any system that forces you to respond 1♠ with this hand must be seriously flawed. The problem with 2♣ followed by 2♠ is not that 2♠ is "fourth suit" forcing, but that is shows a much better hand (reverse). For me, 2♣ and if partner rebids 2♦ I then bid 3♣. Even if partner bids 2♥ over 2♣ I rebid 3♣. Ben I play walsh responces. I will respond 1s with 4 spades and 7 clubs too (if I don't have good GF hand). Maybe it's not good on this hand but has other advatages. I think, it's not posissible to show both my suits and stop in 2s or 3c in most of the systems. If partner is strong I have much more bidding space to find the best contract (But I must start with spades - I can't show it later because of my walsh responces.) The problem is to find the best partscore if partner is weak. The question was what do you bid over 2d. I don't know if I would bid 2nt. I was thinking about 2 spades and 2nt (3nt?). I wrote about 2nt in my post because I wanted to hear comments. 2s are normal (pass - can play on 5-0 fit, 2h no comment, 2nt show (semi)balanced distribution, 3c is forcing) If I bid spades first I will play 2s or 2nt (if partner has minimal hand). If I bid clubs first I will play 3c. My clubs are much better than my spades but it doesn't mean that 3c are better contact than 2s.

2d-(2M)-dbl. is P/C (can be very weak) 2d-(3M)-dbl. is penalty 2d-(2M)-2nt is strong relay(inv+) 2d-(2h)-2s and 2d-(2s)-3h is natural (dbl. gives too much place to opps) Partner and opponent have very rarely the same suit. Be careful with void(singleton) in overcalled suit. (When you have 2 cards in it, the distribution must be exactly 6(partner)+5(RHO)+2(you)+0(LHO). When you have 3, partner must have the other major or a strong hand. As Gerben47 wrote you will easily uncover a psychic.) 2d-2s-(p)-(p) dbl. is strong balanced hand I've never had weak two in spades after this bidding. And if I get it I don't see any problem in passing it.
-
I must bid spades first because after 1d-2c 2h-2s is 4th suit and I am unable to show my 5 spades. I think that 3c should be forcing. What about 2nt now? It's game invit in my system.
-
My double here is something between takeout and penalty. Jxx Jxxxxxx J Jx............4h (can make) Jxxx Jxxx Jx Jxx......pass (Partner should be able to defeat it)
-
I don't see any problem in results like this one when I play with unknown partner. I would bid 4c. I would pass 5d.

"what possible meaning could 4d have?" With monster hand in majors I can bid 3h and 4s over 3nt. 4d immediately show also majors (it isn't in the system but it's logical). So it can be anything except monster majors. But what else it could be? I can never be sure (mainly after 60 boards played - Isn't it natural? :) ). What I want to say is that it's useless to use speculative bids when you have natural and well known one...
-
Ok, it's possible. But why? 4d is not in our system and we never used it, I don't know the meaning. Sometimes it's necessary to improvise but why now when I can use descriptive natural 3h? I think that my partner would recognize the meaning of 4d but I will never be sure about the next bidding until final pass...
-
Yes, you find heard fit on hands I showed, you find spade fit on hand from original post. But what do you do after 1nt-(2d)-3d-(p) 3nt-(p)-?? 3nt is without 4c major and with diamond stopper.

Bid spades to establish spades as trump for 5N GSF. Only info needed is ♠AK. Willing to risk 6S off AK to easily find 7S with AK. 1) After 1N opener, play spades, don't need another trump suit I also bid 5NT and I hope that partner has at least one of AK of spades. I don't understand that you have very good 6 heards and not so good 5 spades. You don't know that partner has 4 spades and only 2 heards. 1nt-2h 2s -5nt ?s Partner can have: AK Jxxx QJx QJ10x In 7s you can take club finesse but 7h are cold.. Or: Kx Jxxx AKxx Jxx 6s one down after club lead, 6h cold... AK xxxx Axx Kxxx Always when your pard has 4h you risk a ruff. 1nt-(2d)-3s-(p) 3nt-(p)- what now?
-
Well, since I have already use exclusive RKC, ♦K should not count at all. Yes, you are right. Sorry..
-
you said you play leb... what would 3d mean, playing leb? 3d is stayman without diamond stopper. -2NT-3c-3d is stayman with a stopper.

Without interferenece: 1nt-3h 3nt-4s 5c -5NT 6NT-7s -3 in major shows 5 cards and GF values (choose 3NT or 4M) or 5-5 and slam try. Opener with only two heards bids 3nt and I reverse 4s (1nt-3s/3nt-4h is passable). -5c is cuebid - I know about the king. -Now I must close both eyes and ask by 5NT for trumph quality. After 6NT life is easy but if the answer was "nothing" I would play 6s without AK of trumphs.... -I think it would be fine in situations like this one use 4NT as something else than BW. Do you have any tips? After interference: 1nt-(2d)-3h-(p) 3s -(p) - 5nt-(p) 6nt-(p) - 7s - .... -We play lebensohl. 3h is natural and GF. I bid heards first because 6 is more than 5 and I can reverse after possible 3NT rebid. -Partner does not have diamond stopper, has only two heards and 4 spades - clear 3s. -5nt ask for trumph control - I hope he has at least one honour. I know about doubleton heard so clubs should be ok. ... HeartA wrote: South North 1C 1H 1S 5D* 5N** 6D*** ?? 7S ***Kings? ***The answer will be 1 king. You can flip a coin - diamond or club king? I don't think that takeout dbl. with 6-5 is a good bid? What about pass by partner?

Depends on your style and vulnerability. Do you bid 4h with x Axxxxxxx x xxx when nonvul.? If you do your partner should have some values for his raise and I would bid 6♥ now. If the hand from your post is minimum for 4h, partner can raise with nothing and they can make (unreachable) 6s - I pass.

I don't think it's good to (pre)balance at third level and hope for 4-4 fit....
