  1. yes , yucky hand seems a good illustration of that hand . 2D for me . , my plan is to try not to play a 5D or 6D on a 4-3 fit :) . well i just don't see any other possible bid for now ... regards syl
  2. ok so here's another problem for novice to intermediate coming again from the "pas a pas" book . don't hesitate to send Inquiry and I some feed back about what we have decided to do . we will also probably make some schedule . this is a declare play i'll try to change 1 declarer play , i defense play . again pls feel free to feed back me about some desire ... so here we are the auction with opps speechless 2D 2H 2nt 3nt to precise think this sequence 2D is forcing to game 2H weak , no ace. 2nt show 24-25 balanced . the 2 hands are K72 7532 J54 864 AQJ AK8 K92 AQJ2 lead is 7 of D (4th best) Est will play ace . pls i ask everyone to let some time to people to think about this deal ... send me email here or in jjsb@bridgebase.com regards syl (jjsb)
  3. hello everyone , thansk for your answer here is the 4 hands and the auction that happened in real 7 10872 10942 Q863 KQ105432 A986 3 AQJ4 KQ65 J3 4 975 J K965 A87 AKJ102 i doubled the 5S and in a second was redouble !! by west for the results that you all can see... it's funny to note the difference of conception that can exist between french and i would say english speaking country , when i asked that question to french experts there was no pass and not even one think of it . i had also some that decided to bid 6C (i don't like that bid at all) . when i ask that to the english speaking experts i know nearly everyone pass , those who don't , think deeply of doing it . I think it's just coming from a different idea of the 5S bid. and also the fact is the "blue bid" (redouble) , didn't exist in France (apart for some situation ) or let say never to win a contract redouble. As for me, well, i'm french so for now follow the french conception (maybe time to change with that deal no? B) ) if i was north i would not double with : void , A10x xxxxx KDxxx. and i would maybe bid 5S holding : Qxxxx Jxxx xxx x even red vs red . in fact i have the impression i may even bid 6 directly with that . I guess it just show that it's a situation you's better talk with your partner . the conception of preempting i mean . note that best defense in 6C give -5 1400. regards syl
  4. BBO 8:52am 25°C in ur room so everything ok but then u receive that hand : IMP all vulnerable J K965 A87 AKJ102 and the auction goes a "dragstar" way B) LHO dealer open 4S , ur partner Pass and RHO 5S , to you . regards syl (jjsb)
  5. IF U WANT TO SEARCH A LITTLE MORE PLS DON'T READ One very important things in Bridge is to wait at first when the lead is done. It’s true for declarer but the defense must also take that time to imagine and have an idea about what is or what can happen… Notice how experts players do (when declarer) , even the card to play on dummy is obvious . He will always have a thougth before playing it … then play 4 or 5 cards and have another break to sum up all the information and then a last break if necessary if there’s a difficult end play. On defense u can use that time declarer MUST take to think about possibilities . U’ll say « declarer play his first card so fast i have to play immediately not giving information » well … there’s an obligation of a few seconds before playing the first cards so u can always take that time even if declares don’t that doesn't mean u give any information to everyone , it's just normal things to do , don’t be afraid of that , even u have an easy card to play (a singleton). during that time , as declarer , u can do things like count dummy points , the number of possible points for declarers (he opens 1nt for exemple so u know how many points he has ) and ur points . Then u have an idea of what ur partner may have. here , u have 11, dummy 18 , declarer must have around 7 so that left partner with around 4 HCP … also, and here it helps , what u can do quite easily is count the number of tricks declarer has already. The lead (i made a mistake not beeing more precise on it ). is obviously coming from 2 small cards (considering that if partner lead a colour you bid, he shows count (with 752 or Q72 he would have lead 2) but i should have precise that). I should have precise also it’s IMP. so with that lead u know that declarer got 2 Spades tricks 1Heart and 1C as a MINIMUM and he’s sure (because of the count of HCP u have done already for declarer hand) of having at least one of the 2 Kings in Club or Heart ( and even he doesn’t , the finesse in C will just work) so that is a minimum of 5 tricks . so what u can be sure now with all that thougth is that if declarer got the K of Diamond noone can prevent declarer for doing at least 9 tricks . So u must considere as a necessity that ur partner got that Key card to make declarer go down … so now imagine what can happen if u take immediately with the King and play another Spade… well ur partner will be in hand with that « so hoping » King of D but then unfortunately cant play Spade … you can also before ur partner take that Diamond with the ace yes , and play S but then unfortunatly later on the play your partner will be in hand with that K if Diamond with no possibility to give u the hand to play your winning Spade. So with all that said u are now able to find the play … u Must duck that first Spade tricks . nothing declarer can do now,. ur partner will be in hand with the King of Diamond , plays Spade he still have and u can do 2 Diamond and 3 Spade Here is the complete deal A42 AJ7 QJ1093 AQ 73 KJ1086 6542 Q103 K65 A42 10983 J7 Q95 K98 87 K6542 PS : if u find that defense declarer will try to play with his C but that will not work... PS 2 the return : i hope i’m as clear as possible … english is not my native language so it’s not always that easy… pls feel free to tell me any comments .
  6. thank u to those who told me there interest about that problem i'll post in the day the solution and i'll try to make the solution as clear as possible . what is important is really what make u take the decision rather than the decision itself . and yes i'm sorry i didnt precise things about leading . basically in the deal i'll give the lead is 3/5 . 9 and 10 Rusinow (means that J deny a higher card) . i'll also shift from decmare play to defensive play . ok so i wait for your last answer and i'll post that within a few hours. regards syl
  7. congratulation to inquiry to find that 100% line of play !! not very easy but i very seldom see someone giving me that line of play . it's find more easily if i ask the question other way ... i mean ask to find the 100% line . anyway it's really a wonderfull bid in my opinion cause nto classical some kind of reasoning we're not use to do in bridge but more in mathematical problem in fact. regards syl
  8. well for my curiousity . U know i'm now lol . even if i'm french and those who answer that 1) how many book do u have in your collection? 2) tell me your 3 best books (in order if possible :) )? 3) what is the last book you have bougth? 4) what is ur best author? 5) have u been told by writter outside ur coutry ? if yes have u read some and what is your favourite? 6) any special comment about one book ? let me know regards syl
  9. well it's just my proper opinion of course but this deal was asking me by one of my good friend and so far this is the one i prefere... here it is R63 AQ62 5432 73 AQJ108 KJ 7 AKQ62 the auction is not good but it's just here for information , nothing more ... it is : 2S(strong) 5D(by west ) 6S all pass . the lead is K of Diamond . East overtake with the Ace and play Spade that West didn't follow... what is the best line of play? regards syl
  10. I want to begin something and if i have the impression and good feedback i may be continue . I’ll try to present 1 or 2 times a deal here suitable for novice to intermediate players . i have no pretention at all doing that of course . it’s just an idea i have in mind and so … it would be nice if you wait maybe 2 days before sending an answer , that way everyone can search it and take time , of course u can send me an email here in the forum or in jjsb@bridgebase.com suggesting your play and i’ll answer it . all are coming from an excellent and very instructive practising book (that helps me a lot sincerely) called « pas à pas » it’s french book and written by , in my opinion excellent frecnh bridge mentor Robert Berthe and Norbert Lebely . So here is the first play , a defensive one :) enjoy A42 AJ7 QJ1093 AQ *****KJ1086 * *Q103 * *A42 * *J7 ***** the auction goes (West dealer) : P 1D 1S 1NT P 3NT all pass partner lead 7 of S declarer play 2 in dummy . what do u do now ? why ? regards syl (jjsb)
  11. hello everyone just wondering what is wrong in our auction and if someone can find ways to go to that cold 6D slam here is 4 hands J8 J10754 AJ1052 A A763 Q942 AQ83 K962 ------ 6 Q10832 J974 K105 ------ KQ98743 K65 at the table the auction was (West dealer noone vulnerable ): W N E S 1C 1H X 2D 2S 5D all pass do you "michael" with the N hand? regards syl PS : note the double over 1H !! would not be my choice if i may say
  12. thanks for the answer and here i give u the 4 hands Q732 AKD QJ4 975 KJ109 A8 ----- J985 AK1083 92 K862 AQJ53 654 1076432 765 4 so , can u see now what was the result and why i use that name for the topics??? B) . well ... the person who got that hand decided to pass... and the declarer claim ....... 0 tricks :) . now if someone is ready to give me an auction to reach a cold grand slam in C when opps open with that suit well ,just let me know eheh. in that case when this deal was played in BBO 700 was -5 IMP . seriously i think that passing inIMP is not the best auction ... i would be terrified to miss a game there. now the auction itself can be disagree by those who will see the 4 hands . personally i do'nt enter into the auction with East's hand , even if i play WJ i would pass South's hand . And the pass by west is far from ridiculous (was made by a good player) so the fact is finally a strange result (to say the least i'll not see that again) for an auction that finally looks just fine.. bridge is just fun sometimes... regards syl (jjsb)
  13. all vulnerable IMP what is ur bid after the beginning of sequence : 1C p p ? with KJ109 ----- AK1083 K862 regards syl
  14. is there someone that know some site where we can have information about the vanderbilt ? regards syl
  15. i have discussed and we noticed there's some problem with the possibility to write word on note on member . it looks like the note i work for rain disappear when i log off and log on again. BUT note i can write for other peopel (not yellow) stay... as for Rain it's look like it's the oppsoite ... the note she wrote for me stay but for other people disappear !!! . well i really don't know more of what is happening but for me there's a bug there... regrads syl
  16. not yet french players introduce?? ok so here i'm :) . My name is Brethes sylvain 28 yo french living in reunion island that belong to french near south africa in the indian ocean (take a map :) lol ) . as far as i know my parents liked cards and i was born with cards in hand :( . haven't got real time to play seriously because of study but u cna find me sometimes haunting bbo . regards syl oh my level ? well beginner to expert depends :) we all go througth that rigth :) .
  17. well i'm probably wrong ther but i have hte impression that if i decided to bid 5C is because i'm not searching for something more it's purely preemptive . The problem , and i agree , is my hand preemptive ? well it's not clear at all , it's why it's very hard. But in those case , and it's only my opinion i just decided to put pressure not telling opps structure of my hand . I may not help partner but i'm not helping opps too... as i said before auction is not finish.. again i do'nt say i'm rigth doing that 4S is probably the best auction , it's just that my choice i would probably choice at table would be 5C regards syl (jjsb in bbo)
  18. i guess it also depends against whom i'm playing . in practice my choice will go on 5C . ihave the impression that doesn't mean the auction is finished ... regards syl (aka "jjsb")
  19. well what pump into my mind , what i would play i think at the table is take K of H , play as of D and as of C and finish in cross ruff . too simple of course but well ... it's a very difficult play there's many possible line of play. and really nto sure what is the best . regards syl
  20. i agree to everything was send by Eugene , that's exactly what i wanted to suggest sending that deal. as Ron said , as long as you can trust the auction and see the cards played u can be sure K of C will make that contract down ... so yes partner's signal is definitely never an order just information ! thinking must be always there ... regards syl
  21. Thanks Inquiry for that wonderfull analysis of the deal !!! impressive i should say . just 2 things to add . firrst for the Lavintahl . i think that when 2 cards left the highest one should mean something (ask for the higher colour) and the small nothing precise . maybe it's something to discuss to discussion but i have the impression that if i don't want to give any information i would just play the small one so i bet the highest should "mean something" second no big deal at all i guess i just wasn't clear but i didn't suggest "any club" ... i said "K is the best card" . anyway again thank you for that really nice analysis of this deal !!!! regards syl
  22. I think that it's not necessary i wait more longer to tell what was the good answer , it's easy and as Ron say a "straigthforward" defense , here are the 4 hands AK95 --- KQ876 QJ85 J42 Q1083 AKQ10963 J4 A4 J2 2 A9643 76 8752 10953 K107 so the good defense is to play C and even if, in these case it's not important, the K is the best card . My intention was not to give an impossible problem to solve but to express in bridge there's so many difference in real situation and bridge "with time" noone in bbo found the defense. As for me well , i was luckily playing with a star (thanks again caroltom) and with few kibbitz and the pressure was really there... sounds stupid rigth ?but well , bridge is also that i think a lot of players can tell about that. It was just more easy for me to just focuse on that 9 of S who looks like asking for D , i was seeing for the Ace in my partner's hand and already see the contract down (in fact i had a thougth of double and regretting i haven't) so i don't try think more and ... play D and give the contract. a good lesson also... it's good to have a good signalisation but well ... sometimes before playing to where your partner ask you to play... better stop and see what can happen... Last thing , notice that defense is much more difficult to play in MP ... i don't want to have declarer hold (for exemple) J42 AKQ10963 Q Q2 yes the contract is still down but ... only one down... regards sylvain
  23. this one happened to me on bbo you hold that very nice hand on south : 76 8752 10953 K107 the auction goes (dealer north) : W N E S 1D p p x 1S 2C 2D 2H 3D 3H p 4H p p p your partner lead Ace of S and dummy appear this way Q1083 J4 J2 A9643 your pd follow by K and 9 of S . i guess u ruff?? if you do you see west follow 3 times in S. the 2 the 4 then J... well to you now . regards syl
