Two wrongs don't make a right
Double ! replied to Echognome's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Remembered this quote but couldn't remember who had had it written as their message before: now I know. Try using this quote with a middle or high school teacher or dean who's giving you a lecture on desired behavioral decorum. Would love to see their' reactions. lololololololol Then again, a Math teacher might be impressed. -
not vul vs. vul, imps, 2 passes to you
Double ! replied to luke warm's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
2 shovels♠ (spades) in a heartbeat. 1) i have interior sequence with Ace/ I want or can stand the lead. 2) pressure bidding on lho 3) without good fit and distro, pard better have a good reason for taking further action 4) am of the old KS school that advocates keeping 3rd seat openers relatively up to strength in order to not distort the rest of the system and create the needs for compensatory conventions to guard against a light opener. If you bid 1S and P makes a negX, I'll help you purchase the shovel to did the hole you will want to crawl into. 5) if you pass, chances are good that you might never get a chance to show spade holding. 6) by not bidding now, partner might infer that you have length but not much strength in spades at some point during the play of the hand and defend accordingly on a negative inference. -
The only consideration is to help partner make a reasonable decision; and if I pass with a weaker hand, pard is not barred from reopening. It is true that occassionally you can miss a partscore. But if you partner doesn't have a clue as to what he shoudd bid over your 3 clubs, you have lost much more. That's a big 10-4 !!! agree with you to say nothing of the fact that the sample hand was a 7-loser hand: 3-level overcall? my boat is to try to have a sound foundation for shared partnership decision-making.

How should this be bid?
Double ! replied to ArcLight's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
with apologies to all MAF and Walsh-style players (i am the latter), these are guidelines, not rules to be so rigidly used that all bridge reason goes out the window. 7-4 hands bid the 7 first. I don't mind rebidding 2H over 1NT followed by 3D because P should have at least xx in diamonds in order to rebid 1NT, so there's the stronger likelihood that diamonds can be set up. Now, reaching them might prove to be a challenge. (1C-1H-1N-3D = weak 4-6 with most people I know) -

Purpose/Function/Bridge Online Polls...
Double ! replied to inquiry's topic in BPO - Bridge Poll Online
Oops, sorry Elianna a little bit of dyslexia there. or was it dysgraphia....(dystypia?) Thank Dog that I don't make more letter reversals, transpositions, and omissions than I already make given these 3 eyes that I was born with. Anyway, sincere apology. -
I love the new voice feature although some letters/ words / cards played get jumbled or omitted when play speed is relatively quick (albeit not that high). Someone else in the room had a dissenting opinion... "What is that noise? TURN IT OFF" That's what headphones are for, I guess. and/or muting BTW: considering switching the voice to a different language such as Francais ou Espaniol, si. Maybe will help improve my knowledge of these languages. Espaniol would be especially helpful considering the fact that I work in a school in the south bronx, NYC where a subtstantial percentage of people hablas espaniol. This voice option was a really thoughtful and creative idea.

FWIW: It's 1:40 pm DST on east coast USA (13:40?) Just tried and was unsuccessful in attempt to access forum via BBO tools/web site. Guess it really is down. Bookmarking favorite sites has its advantages at times. :D

I agree with you winstonm. That was my point. If we're looking for P to bid 3NT with Hxx in clubs and some outside cards or a key spade card, then we need quick tricks, not slower tricks to play 3NT safely. Bon chance in 3NT if p has xx, Axxx, Qxx, KQx and bids 3S in resp to 3C. With KTx of diamonds, y'all only have 8 tricks with spade lead. You lose the race. With A of diamonds you win, you have 9 tricks.

lolololol r.e.: "assuming relative sanity of all parties"..... Isn't that a rather presumptuous if not a totally unrealistic position to take?
-
Why are were defending? Lead a small diamond. maybe get ruff and/or suit pref. from P.
-
Are you that sure that the opps are in their optimal or even normal contract at 2D?
-
4 hearts, might as well support. The issue is, we're not buying this hand at 4 hearts. Interesting question: would 3NT show minors with heart support? Most would probably say that 3NT is to play.
-
I wouldn't bid at imps or matchpoints. Opps used garbage stayman (appropriately named IMO), and you have no assurance that they landed in the correct place, especially at MPs. The hand just became random. Why put yourself at the end of a shotgun when LHO now knows essentially what to do over any action you might take?
-
Once again, this question exposes the vulnerabilities of strong NT systems. Me guess you need enough to tolerate a pass/ converting to penalty double, or a 2NT rebid by opener.
-
What a revolting development this is! I'll defend. Next time deal me some more spades if you'ze gunna make me open this hand.
-
What does the partnership say partner needs to bid 3NT in response to your 3 clubs. The answer to what you need in diamonds should be somewhere in the answer to my question.
-
Matchpoints? 1) I would not have opened, even with 3 quicks. At matchpoints, Spades rule, and I ain't got many. I have no rebid should P respond 1 spade. 2) if forced to open this hand, I pass at this point. Partner is still sitting on the other side of the table. Partner will take some action with values. 3) maybe would have opened playing mini-roman 2D.

FWIW 1) I think you and Elianna deserve a heck of a lot of credit and thanks for your time and effort. 2) This here forum seems to be a microcosm of the real bridge world. 3) If anyone gives you grief, ignore it. It's not worth your or her time to pay attention to it. 4) Think of this as a labor of love. If you stopped then you'd be "bored outta your mind"!!!!!! (ye got a lotta support out here) DHL -
tritto..........................?
-
you can give up Al Roth I'll keep Barbara Rapaport in a heartbeat.
-
Quack, quack, quack Duck the diamond, pray that diamonds aren't 5-0 5 diamonds+ 2 spades, + 1 heart + 1 club = 9......I think, but never know with all of this new Math that's going around these days.
