  1. thanks WesleyC, good explanation and useful idea about under leading. Ash
  2. Hello all. Questions in general terms so no hands or bids. I'm happy with top of sequence QJT9 opening leads. And with the same holding in another suit that is lead, you play the 9, the lowest card that can win. Now say opponents are in NT's and you are starting a new suit through declarer that hasn't been bid, say QJTx, with something like xxx(x?) in dummy. Declarer would be expected to hold a high honour.. dummy xxx(n) ? QJT(n)? on lead (where its more important to open this suit than to return partners lead) NT bidder. and you want to i) force declarer to play an honour and ii) suggest to partner its OK to lead the suit back, and perhaps better than continuing with his own suit. An idea comes to mind: low leads tend to suggest interest or better holding in the suit and higher cards not so much. That guideline may not be relevant here. How do you tell partner you are happy for him to continue leading his opening suit, but you just started the other suit as it needs to be opened from your side of the table? If declarer doesn't cover with the K, do you then lead the J (next in sequence) or Q (suggesting you also have the J)? With a different holding Qx, perhaps you have lead with Q with the intention of having a second lead in the same suit and or to avoid a blockage. I hope that makes some sense. My question. Do you lead the Q saying you have QJ (most of the time) and ideally the T, but not the K? Saying to partner, "if you win declarers K, then its OK to lead back to me in the suit". Or do you lead the 9, indicating you don't have the 8 but could have an ascending sequence? Declarer not covering the 9 is a bit unusual and might suggest the 9 lead is more threatening to declarer ... i.e. its a sequence lead. If declarer doesn't cover with the K, do you then lead the J (next in sequence) or top, the Q (suggesting you also have the J)? For the later I can see it is easier for declarer to play honour combinations in the suit that make it harder for the defenders to read the lead. Perhaps that alone makes the first option a better one? What is standard play here? Thank you, Ash
  3. Thank you for the many comments so far. As usual there are contrasting ideas and they have helped me settle on a sensible approach. Ash.
  4. South Dealer S J2 H AQJ4 D KJ98 C AJ3 North S AQT9876 H 3 D AQ54 C 2 some possibilities: 1N 2H, 2S … now 3D GF natural or 4C/4H splinters? I've assumed a raise to 3S is invitational but it maybe GF? If 3S is GF the auction would be easier. 1N 2H, 2S 3D, 4D 4N, 5H 6S … 4N is KCB, 1430. I’ve just realised a complication with above auction, are trumps D or S’s? If D’s North may have bid 5D showing the KD. So perhaps splinter better as you only want to play in spades? Another question: I’d like to bid 4C as splinter (better splinter giving partner some bidding room) or could it be Gerber (4NT being quantitative)? 1N 2H, 2S 4C … if 4C is standard as Gerber, then 4H splinter but its not going to be that helpful. Finally a texas transfer but that doesn’t seem to get any extra information from opener either. thank you , Ash
  5. topic has been edited a little to clarify what I meant. Hello all, South Dealer S 6 H KJ943 D A982 C AJ3 North S KQ3 H AQ2 D 75 C KQT92 1H 2C, 2D 2H, 3C is 3C a delayed support or a club feature? If you don't get the suit in now you probably never will. How many good minor slams could be missed? If a shape bid it highlights the spade shortage. If control in partners suit its likely to be the Ace as second round controls (K or x) might be too ambiguous? Delayed support makes the auction easier but is that standard in this type of sequence. Another sequence: 1H 2C, 2D 2H, 2S (this isn't directly related to the hands, south has something like 3 5 4 1) Because we are below 3 and game levels is this also likely to be 3 carder (perhaps 4 carder and not strong enough to reverse)? Thank you, Ash.
  6. Hello all, playing 2/1 with 2C* check back on invitational hand: East (dealer) S Q854 H AK4 D - C KJ9843 West S AT9 H 6 D KQ7432 C Q76 our bidding: 1C 1D, 1S 2C*, 2D** 3D, 3NT 2D** forced on weak hands. Is this just a bad hand for our system or is there a better sequence? thanks, kiwinacol
  7. Hello, at the moment GIB will give DD information for contract. Would it be possible in results screen to enter other possible contracts and their information for played hands please, even just total possible tricks would be nice. Thank you.
  8. Hello All. I've searched the forum without discovering the guides I need. There are two CC types; one the standard chart like CC with spreadsheet like cells and the other that allows one to follow a pathway. Its the one where you see the opening bids and descriptions and you click on a bid to open another part of the tree that I won't to modify. I've opened several with 'edit' option but can't change the first screen or any other part. Is there a utility or have I missed a TAB or option that does it. I'm using a mac with browser version of bbo. Thanks Ash.
  9. Hello again. I live a long way away from you (New Zealand) but that should't be an issue as I am usually home day and night. I will email to your bbo address, when you reply I'll tell you more about myself and my bridge. I'm a keen player and love learning and improving and to forming a working partnership. Regards Ash.
  10. Hello, what time zone do you play in? Kiwinacol.
  11. UPDATE to earlier post #2 Hello again, the first sentence in my recent post, '2/1 or Precision partner' didn't exactly say what I intended. I would be happy to play 2/1 or Wei style Precision (with some asking bids). I meant to say that I had learnt and been playing OCP Super Precision. Oliver's Super Precision is a magnificent system but very complex; demanding significant partnership homework and regular play to master its code, nuances and strategies. I'm happy with many conventions and would try yours. If I don't know them just give me a while to research and appreciate them. Finally this forum doesn't seem to be a productive place to find partners. Any suggestions? thanks Ash. :) kiwinacol
  12. Hello, it would be handy to be able to search for players by country. Is that possible? thank you
  13. #1 Hello all , I’m looking for a partner(s) who is interested in playing 2/1 or Super Precision (e.g. OCP, Oliver Clarkes version at: http://www.pigpen.org.uk/BBO/index.php) I’ve played Acol for about 30 years and Precision slightly less. Recently for the last few months I’ve been enjoying studying 2/1 - Mike Lawrence and Thurston versions and that would be my preferred system. Other good players say that I’m at least at advanced level for play and bidding and I really enjoy defence. For a willing partner, I would guarantee to put the time into learning, practicing and developing a partnership . My home is in a small town in the southern island of New Zealand. Times?: Eastern USA , from 3.00pm onwards fits me well as its morning in NZ (3.00pm = 7.00am in NZ). At the moment, except for (my) Monday and Thursday pm I could play in my evenings. As I’m early retired other times could fit. Anyone on New Zealand or Australia or similar time zones would be fine. Look for New Zealand ST, NZST. thanks, Ash, kiwinacol.
  14. Thanks for all the responses. With the replies and research I appreciate my 4D splinter was about a king short of normal values. My texts suggest 2/1 also shows about an opener, 12+. Aguahombre, 1S 2H, 2S 4D identifies the suit but if my splinter was aggressive, wouldn't the 2/1, 2H be even more so? To me as a learner the slower sequence 'feels' stronger ... that's not very scientific, but I'm still sorting out the ceiling and floors for bids.
  15. Hello all, I'm learning Mike Lawrences 2/1 style from his CD and my new partner has another learned mentor, but we still missed slam ... yes its not the greatest one you've been in. North, D, all non-vul. S AT9753 H A6 D 62 C A87 South S Q864 H KQJT8 D - C T643 Our sequence: 1S 4D* (X) 4H 5D** 5S pass .. 5D** splinter is void. With my heart holding, the H cue was very encouraging, hence my second try on my marginal hand. I was reluctant to bid 2H GF over 1S as I felt I didn't have enough HCP, and partner may have wasted values in D. My partners mentor suggested: 1S 2H 2S 3S 4C 4D 4H 4S 6S ... " as I never splinter with a void or stiff ace." We haven't yet established many agreements, but I felt altering my partner to the D shortage on a possibly minimal hand (not intending to suggest more than game values) was a reasonable description. We have not yet started on Bergen style raises. One problem was that we couldn't put a value on the splinters hcp value, and secondly what would the alternative 2/1 2H response show in comparison? Does a splinter sit under/near the lower end of a 2/1 bid or are they similar in value, the splinter shape reducing the load on other 2/1 sequences? I can understand not splintering a singleton Ace but a void feels OK to me. Is it fine to upgrade the south hand to a 2H bid? thank you.
  16. thanks to all posters and sorry for errors .. my scribble at the table and poor checking. NORTH S J5 H AQ85 D KQT74 C A7 SOUTH S KT93 H K D 9832 C KJ96
  17. Hello, Acol players bid this hand easily: 1D 1S, 1NT 3NT. 1NT = 15-16 North D, all V S J5 H AQ85 D KQT74 C A7 South S KJ95 H K D 9832 C KT76 I'm new to 2/1 and or sequence failed: 1D 1S, 2D pass. Is North suitable for 1NT opening? How do we get to 3NT? thanks.
  18. Hello Chase, I live in a small rural town in New Zealand and your 5pm translates to 10am in our time zone. That suits me, especially as we approach winter here. Bridge is fun for me but I am competitive in liking to win by playing well. My system history: a long time on Acol, about 30 years with Precision, with some asking bids mainly based on Reeces book and Wei and Radins text, 1C complete. For the last three years I've been learning/playing Oliver Clarkes Super Precision (very complex) , http://www.pigpen.org.uk/BBO/Intro.php. 2/1 has been my focus and interest in the last 3 months - limited time playing but heaps of time reading, learning and trailing new approaches with my Jack computer application. I enjoy the partnership work and harmony required for intelligent defence. I want to get better at 2/1; to learn more and to play well. cheers, Ash. kiwinacol
  19. Hello, I’d be grateful if you would help with my script please. Our bbo group is having problems with Lebensohl (we use it system wide, not just over NT opening, but this code is a starting point). Every thing seems to work ok (in not generating errors and hands are as expected) until I get to the conditional line. Then unexpected deals appear .. if east has overcalled in D’s south should have a singleton D. e.g. N S AT62 H AK6 D 7632 CA4 OK E S Q9 H Q52 D AJ954 C KT8 OK S S J843 H J987 D KQ8 C J8 ... if east matches (he does) conditional then south should have singleton D W S K75 H T43 D T C Q76532 ==================================== North: 1NT OPENING - 15 to 17 East: any single suit overcall South: GF, Stop, no stayman West: balance of suits and points ==================================.... this heading is what I'm eventually aiming for # NT opening 15-17 (shape(north, any 4432 + any 4333 ) and hcp(north)>14 and hcp(north)<18) and # Overcalls ( # Club overcall ((hcp(east)>11 and hcp(east)<14 and hcp(east,clubs)==5) and clubs(east)>=5) or # Diamond overcall ((hcp(east)>11 and hcp(east)<14 and hcp(east,diamonds)==5) and diamonds(east)>=5) or # Heart overcall ((hcp(east)>11 and hcp(east)<14 and hcp(east,hearts)==5) and hearts(east)>=5) or # Spade overcall ((hcp(east)>11 and hcp(east)<14 and hcp(east,spades)==5) and spades(east)>=5) and # when ‘if’ below works, Responder will later have ... values, no stop, at least interest in one major # and I’ll replace ‘shape(south, xxxx)’ with that code # the line below is meant to check if east has overcalled in D’s. (diamonds(east) >=5 and hcp(east, diamonds) ==5 ? shape(south, xx1x) : shape(south, xxxx) ) ) ==================================== diamonds(east) >=5 and hcp(east, diamonds) ==5 ? In the line above I don’t want east to be generated 5+D and 5 HCP, but to be checked for it, so that I can give south a stop or not in D’s etc: is there another way? thanks, Ash
  20. Nige1, thanks for your support and help
