Bidding Problems for I/N players Part 13
smerriman replied to Kaitlyn S's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
For completeness' sake, which bid is that? Assuming you cue bid aces before kings. -
What is your question? You should bid 6♣ there, not 6♥, showing your cheapest possible king. 6♦ would deny a club king, and 6♥ denies club and diamond kings - ie, exactly what the definition shows. In the original hand, 5nt bypassed the lower 5♥ and 5♠ king bids, denying those kings again as per description. When clubs are trumps, a 6♣ response to 5nt is a bit silly as Helene said, but is consistent with all other trump bids so seems a waste of time changing the definition.
-
Just to play devil's advocate -if you don't want to bid the slam because you think there is a chance (albeit very small) that Gib has 0 keycards, doesn't Gib have an identical excuse that there is a chance (albeit very small) that you have 0 keycards? The first virtually requires Gib to have every point but the aces - the second requires you to - eg: KQJx Qxx KQJ KQJ You could even take away a jack or two.
-
They cross in hearts, not spades. They get a diamond, heart, and club ruff.

Sure - but not when the aim was to make it easier to select in the first place! -

As a web dev myself, I can tell you that with so many touch screens these days (not just mobiles), you can no longer assume the user has a mouse/the ability to 'hover' for anything crucial - and a large enough tappable area is definitely crucial. -
Just to satisfy my curiosity, can you clarify 1eyedjack and my point above - after you won the ♥A, how did you lead to the ♠J?
-
Ahha. Seems I didn't learn from your bridge movie, which is the same idea.
-
I can't see anything other than winning the first spade and playing the ♣K, getting 9 tricks if they split 3-2.
-
This has me stumped too. The first issue with winning the Ace isn't the dummy entry, but the fact you have no way back to hand at trick 2 to finesse the spades in the first place.

dadim handed me my second thrashing, putting me certainly out of contention: dadim 51 - smerriman 16 http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=ARDCHALLENGE:a7b48847.9e0d.11e6.8e99.0cc47a39aeb4-1477769216&u=smerriman

Having thought about it, I'm going to feel too bad restarting in case the fact I was doing badly is influencing my reasoning too much. So I'll just accept the boards so far and finish out the challenge. That's the fairest all round.
-
I haven't started against Dadim. I rushed through half of the boards against awm this morning trying to get it out of the way quickly without paying much attention since you had not to start. What should I do now? (I was doing quite badly, so now not sure how fair it would be to restart, but I was going quite fast.)
-
Oops. Already had a couple of challenges accepted after Diana confirmed the bots. dadim + awm - will just play these two for fun to get them off the list, but not to be counted, I guess.

Bidding a grand slam
smerriman replied to smerriman's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Thanks all. Most RKCB references I've found have 5NT denying a king, but it makes sense to save space by jumping to 6 trumps without a king, using 5NT to show some sort of stronger hand (either the K of hearts as P_Marlowe says, or more general as per nullve). I can't see how to get to a point North would be able to + know to do so. Mainly because playing first round controls, I couldn't see how adding 4♣ - 4♠ could help anyone - if anything, it's going to make partner more likely to think I'm missing an ace. I guess if you allow second round controls, 4♣ - 4♥ would give me the heart king info slightly earlier, if that helps (such as partner being able to show the Q of hearts during the trump queen ask as Cyberyeti suggests). -

I was playing Gib's system, but not particular interested in Gib, just general ideas. Depending on your choice of rebid, I seem to get to the same spot: 2♣ - 2♦ - 2♠ - 3♠ - 4NT - 5♦ - 5♥ - 6♥ - 6♠ 2♣ - 2♦ - 2NT - 3♣ - 3♠ - 4♥ (spade raise) - 4NT - 5♦ - 5♥ - 6♥ - 6♠ I can't seem to bid anything more than 6♠. Partner can count the Q♥ as an extra trick, but doesn't know if we're missing an ace.

This is the last thread I'll post about Gib's defense - nothing much more to be said if this never gets fixed. [hv=http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?sn=smerriman&s=SAK52HT54DAT54C54&wn=Robot&w=SJT76H63DKQJCAT32&nn=Robot&n=SQ98HKJ9D96CKJ987&en=Robot&e=S43HAQ872D8732CQ6&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=P1D(Minor%20suit%20opening%20--%203+%20%21D%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points)P1N(2-5%20%21C%3B%202-4%20%21D%3B%202-3%20%21H%3B%202-3%20%21S%3B%206-10%20HCP%3B%207+%20total%20points)PPP&p=S4SAS6S8C4C3CJCQS3SKS7S9C5C2C7C6C8D3D4CTSJSQH2S2C9D7S5CASTD6D8H4H6H9HQH5HAHTH3HJH7D5DKHK&c=7]400|300[/hv] Skip forward to trick 11, from East's perspective. All South and West have are 6 diamonds between them. There are 20 possible ways these could be arranged. In 18 of these, returning a heart results in *less* tricks than returning a diamond. In 2 of these, returning a heart results in the same number of tricks as returning a diamond. Gib returns a heart. This means it only simulated two of the twenty possibilities. Even basic robots should do better than that. This needs to be fixed.

Bidding Problems for I/N players Part 9
smerriman replied to Kaitlyn S's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Kathryn was suggesting 3nt, not 3♦. "What's the harm" was answered in the next paragraph. -
Right - that's definitely a good thing, but is unrelated to the actual issue here - why is basic Gib making these defensive mistakes, when according to the definition of how it defends, it should be 100% impossible (more impossible than the declarer play, where the algorithm involved is a lot more complex). And will BBO ever look into it? In terms of defense, the only difference between advanced Gib and basic Gib is an increased number of simulations - but even with a small number of simulations, the above mistakes should never happen, implying there's a larger fault here. (Even if the programmers looked into a single example, and said the reason Gib lead the worst possible card is because it only ran 10 simulations, by a 1 in a million fluke, all of the 10 happened to not include the usual distributions, so it didn't think the card it played mattered. That would satisfy me.)

Does that include the free weekly instant tournament? Just saw this at another table: [hv=http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?sn=civra1&s=SJ832HAQ8DKT98CA4&wn=Robot&w=SAT976HJ972D4CT72&nn=Robot&n=SKQ4HKT6DQJ763CJ3&en=Robot&e=S5H543DA52CKQ9865&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=P1D(Minor%20suit%20opening%20--%203+%20%21D%3B%2011-21%20HCP%3B%2012-22%20total%20points)P3N(Balanced%20--%202-5%20%21C%3B%202-5%20%21D%3B%202-3%20%21H%3B%202-3)PPP&p=H2H6H3HADTD4D3DACKC4C2C3C6CAC7CJDKS6D6D5D8H7DQD2DJC9D9S9D7H5S2S7HTH4HQHJH8H9HKC8S4S5SJSTS3SASQC5CTSKCQS8]400|300[/hv] See trick 11. Similar to MrAce's, except there are only 3 cards left, two suits, and it plays the card guaranteed to be worse than any other.

We've moved on from hundreds of threads never being replied to, to your replies saying they're being looked into. Yet I haven't seen a single response with the result of said investigation. Was anything found? Or did they give up? Bugs like the ones in this thread seem seem to be the highest priority given how common they are.
