I like running Tourneys. Of late I have been inclined to try different types of tourneys. Can someone give me a rundown of the different types of tourneys that I can create. I have played some and know how they run...others are unfamiliar to me by name..if you know what I mean.. Can someone explain the swiss movement ..the barometer scoring ..and how do I set it so that the scores show at the end of each round...I did it once ..must have been by accident.. The survivor tourney ..I suppose people with low averages get cut at some point; what settings are ok in terms of which round and what % cut... A nice world to explore..Lay it on me guys... Thx in advance Regards Willow23

Are transfers actually a good idea?
willow23 replied to EricK's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I would stick to transfers as it appears to have more for than against it..not that I have willingly tried natural responses ..often I play it, when my partner(new) plays natural. 1. Most material that I have read prefer to keep the stronger hand concealed; think about it..entire systems have been designed to accomodate that situation ..like transfer positives.. 2. One often picks up a trick of two with the lead coming into strength. Especially with nice intermediates..with the rule of 11, 7 and others working for you. With that 3 point margin a king or queen is concealed from opps :P...that can go a long way..as well as the NT openers with a five card minor..hidden..the possibilities are endless :P -
Major suit overcalls
willow23 replied to Flame's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
:D Interesting idea; wise to let your partner know though.. I play with people who overcall with 4 card majors and often a 5 carder is lurking in the hand of the opponents.. If you do ..warn partner ..an aggressive bidder like myself have jumped to the 3 level with 4 cards oppostie such an overcall (LOTT) and found myself in sticky 5-0 situations.. :P Nothing in cast in stone in bridge, it does have some benefits when opps do not know how to handle it:) Almost like the anoying ACOL system.. :P Cheers -
Very interesting hands.. On the first hand 2♥(forcing) then show♥ support ..4/5 level based on partner's rebid.. B) On the second hand I would jump cue 4♦ to show ♥ support and ♦ void. :D Both hands are slamish ..so whatever you bid make sure it screams slam interest..:) All a matter of agreements. Regards

support double or not
willow23 replied to kolay's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think that you and p simply have to agree on something ..The bidding sequence can qualify it for a support dbl but the level of play may land you in trouble depending on the vulnerability and whether the side has stoppers in spades...So you may need a t/o ish shape, spade stoppers or strength for that dbl even though it can be a support dbl so p can have 2Nt option, 3 clubs or 3 of his suit based on agreement.. You and p decide what other feature in the hand can be expected with that a dbl that forces the partnership to the 3 level. N.B Generally support dbls should allow play at the two level. The Best Bidding System
willow23 replied to twcho's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
The best system is in the eye of the beholder... :) Results from a prefered/chosen system depends highly on partnership agreements, individual ability and memory and judgement... I pretty much juggle between 2/1 and precision.. B) ...have settled for system of choice - precision 2/1 gameforce and change gadgets as per partnership...the two co-existing seems groovy.. B) It also helps if you can pick up almost anybody an play..I guess natural systems are winners there... :) -
Bridge Books you have re-read the most
willow23 replied to inquiry's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Too many books out there...he he B) 100 bridge winning tips -Ron Klinger Partnership Defense in Bridge - Kit Woolsey Always seem to need a refresher course...lol Then there are those you read and peek in from time to time : 2/1 Game force - Max Hardy Precision today - David Berkowitz / Brent Manley B) But guess one has to stay on top of things... Nice to see the various approaches...selecting the best ...hard work though... :) Whatever one is comfortable with is much more like it.... :) -
B) I do not know how many share the same sentiment..but sometimes a tourney is scheduled and the club manager is otherwise engaged....as the director ..you would like a nice turnout ..but let's face it ...sometimes a special appeal may be needed to remind members...(to me ...:) blush) it is embarrasing to send periodical reminders and appeals through the lobby ...i.e in the absense of an authorised (unavoidably detained) manager....Can it be arranged for members of a club to be given that privellage to send messages only to their club members?...This would be a handy tool for a TD who needs to appeal to his fellow club members, in the absence of the manager, to come to play a club tourney..even when you are playing a club game i.e in the club itself and you would like to appeal to members of that club, who are in the lobby, but do not want to crowd the lobby with messages..after all you just want to speak to members from your club...:)....what sayeth thee... I think it is an important step to clamp down on lobby chat...as this can be very annoying...so much so that I have checked "ignore lobby chat" Also If a club manager would like to share the club list so that he can be assisted in that regard ...club tourneys exclusive to members...can that be arranged via bbo software? BBO is a very great Bridge Family ..in my opinion the best place to play bridge ...and have constantly been improving...making incredible strides....I am always amazed with the changes ...surly some of these minor issues can be addressed..:) Please advise as I may not be aware of some of the features that the software is capable of... B)

:P I was directing a tourney...Got the usual distress signal..accepted and was zapped to a table...Chorus the usual "need a director"..hoping to get the ever welcomed..np..sorry..ok now response..However ...a player makes a report ..."my partner did not alert"...I am thinking .."what a snitch!"...and he continues .but..all this time, nothing from the players opps...so I am thinking that he is missinformed about the self - alert system..so I carry on..."yes ..but even if he did you would not see the alert..Is your opps complaining?"..The player replies no...so just as I was typing my solution to give them an A- for reporting themselves...The player's opps private chat me saying no problem.it's ok..:)...Not exactly the kind of reward for honesty ...but was sensing that the player wanted to punish him/herself...lol ;)

:D Hi..since BBO always seem to amaze me...lets see if this option is possible...a room where players with certain computer requirements can play pridge in an interactive multimedia atmosphere...where players can see each other on web cams or post a picture ...and..speak via mics...Revolutionery.....What do you guys think.. :)

willow23 replied to petermooney's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Very possible....each person should have their own username and password...enjoy..best place to play bridge.. -
B) Very nice...I look foward to participating..:)...I was always tempted to purchase $BBO ...now I do not have a choice...I like the opportunity of evaluating myself on a wide scale...BBo ..now ACBL has provided such a wonderful opportunity...I think I speak on behalf of all...when I say that it is our pleasure to give back to BBO for all the effort that they have put into the software...I hope that a very large chunk of that $1.00 goes to BBO.. :D ...Good looking out...I always seem to wonder what will happen next on this site...KEEP IT UP>>>FEELS LIKE HOME TO ME>>>:)..now the problem seems to be getting a partner that knows me and convention..and if the time of those tourneys fit into my schedule. ;) ..I hope all is well there...THX BBO

willow23 replied to Erkson's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I always keep asking what other possible changes can come about...and no sooner I ask . B) .I am smacked with another brilliant idea or improvement...I think that the translation project is insightful...one should not miss out on the best bridge site in the world to a language barrier...sounds like quite a bit of work...but who ever thought that we would get this far right~!...:D...Home Run Guys ...Good Luck on the project... -

Yes, I ran into that. The problem is the selection you want is "Edit Avatar Settings"; not "Change Personal Photo". I don't know what the latter is for. Much Thanks chief..Always a pleasure to get help from someone with experience B) ...Take care..

There was an incident where some TD I know all my life. :D <blush> had a request from a table to increase the time as he had a sitout pair at a 7-Min / round tourney.....So at the 1 min blink ..the TD confidently changes round time to 6 min..thinking that all players will get an extra 6 min...when that did not work ..he tries 8 min ...only to see 1 min blinking again...Well , you can just imagine the true confessions session...lol...Sorry .."Newbie TD, Sorry for any inconvenience caused"...lol..I <I mean my friend  >had to chuck it up to inexperience ..as that was my first time running a Tournament by my self...as a co-director ..never had to change round time.. Talk about learding the hard way...

Well I have always been an aggressive bidder... So I bidded 4♣ ..hopping that my p had 4 in anymajor suit and sign off in 4♥ or 4♠ Telling my p that I have a good ♦ suit and support for any other suit bid...this is the hand opposite mine... ♠ Q 9 8 ♥ Q 9 7 4 ♦ A 5 2 ♣ A 9 5 3 Well like anything else ...it is important to have a good understanding of your p and the game...so ...one has to ask themselves ..how may points does my p have ? and what contract is best...so as my p...what would you bid...;)
