  1. [hv=d=s&v=b&s=sakj9xhkjdakxxckx]133|100|Scoring: IMP (1C)-X-(1H)-P (2H)-?[/hv] What's your plan?
  2. [hv=d=w&v=b&s=s7hkj9753dakj6c72]133|100|Scoring: IMP (2D)-P-(3H)-P (3S)-P-(P)-?[/hv] 2d multi 3h pass or correct x of 2d by partner would have been 12-15 bal or good hand x of 3h by you would have been take out What do you bid now?
  3. I need a way, from a computer program, to determine certain characteristics of a hand. In particular, 1. Does a hand contain scattered or concentrated values. KQ2 54 52 AQJT32 vs Q32 K2 Q2 AJT532 2. Is a suit a good quality or poor quality. e.g. Q97432 vs AQ9765 I could have a good stab at defining this for myself, but would prefer to use existing evaluation methods if they do exist Does anyone know if there are any algorithms to analyse these types of characteristics and if they exist are they written up anywhere.
  4. [hv=d=n&v=e&n=skjt97hjt643d7c86&s=saq82hk2dkqjcaqj9]133|200|Scoring: MP P-(3D)-X-(P) 4D-(P)-4NT-(P) 5S-(P)-6S[/hv] For once this was the opposition. 6S is obviously ridiculous, but 5S would have been the same score as it turns out. Who did too much? Could the 5 level have been avoided?
  5. [hv=d=s&v=a&s=sat3hkqjt9djt98ca]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1H-(2S)-X-(P) ?[/hv] What would you bid?
  6. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sat97hak854da43ca]133|100|Scoring: IMP P-(P)-1H-(P) 1NT-(P)-?[/hv] What do you bid?
  7. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=s6hajt75dqj82cak3]133|100|Scoring: IMP P-(1S)[/hv] Is this a 2H bid or a double?
  8. [hv=d=e&v=b&s=sq3haj73da5cjt964]133|100|Scoring: IMP (2D)-P-(2S)-P (p)-? 2D - Multi 2S - To play opposite wk 2 in ♠[/hv] Do you pass or double?
  9. [hv=d=e&v=b&s=sjt5h3dkt52cjt865]133|100|Scoring: XIMP (1H)-P-(3S)*-4S (5H)-? *Splinter [/hv] What would you bid?
  10. I didn't pass at the time - but now think it is right to pass. Would the passers still pass with [hv=s=sajxhq87xxdxxcjt9]133|100|[/hv] Is this closer or does it make no difference
  11. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=s8ha874dk95ckq754]133|100|Scoring: IMP 1S-(P)-2C-(3D) 3S-(P)-?[/hv] What do you bid on this hand and is it obvious?
  12. [hv=d=e&v=n&n=sa87642ha2dq3ca95&w=sh9764dakt9876ck2&e=skqjt5hdj52cjt863&s=s93hkqjt853d4cq74]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] This was wild - The bidding at our table went (2D*)-P-(P)-2S (P)-4H-(P)-4NT (P)-P-(P) We've now agreed that 4♥ is natural  This went one off after east led the K♠ and partner mis-guessed the end position
  13. Indeed it does work and you would gain a part score swing. Well you would have done, had your other pair not let through a no play 5C in the other room  Partner held : x - Qxxx - Txxx - Jxxx
  14. Just to be clear the X in the auction was there to represent either a 1NT or a 2C bid. OK it was a really duff choice of symbol.
  15. If you bid 1NT or 2♣ then the auction will continue (2♠)-P-(P)-? - This has been the auction so far (P)-P-(1♠)-X (2♠)-P-(P)-? What would the 1NT and 2♣ bidders bid now?
  16. [hv=d=e&v=b&s=s72hkqjt987d3cq43]133|100|Scoring: IMP (2D*)-? * Multi - Only weak[/hv] What would you bid?
  17. [hv=d=w&v=b&s=sak42hadkj5ckt765]133|100|Scoring: IMP (P)-P-(1S)-?[/hv] What do you bid?
  18. [hv=d=s&v=b&s=sj765hadaq7543c82]133|100|Scoring: MP (P)-P-(2H)-?[/hv]
  19. Vul vs Not - MP (1H)-2C-(2D)-X (P)-2H-(3D)-3H Double is either exactly four spades, or a hand that wants to make a forcing bid in spades. 2S would be non-forcing with five. Unfortunately our agreements ended there :) What should 2H show and in that context what is 3H?

If you run the T 1 and 2 become 1. The ♣J onside 2. ♣Kx/Kxx coming down Which has to be better as you are no longer reliant on the 9 falling I think it is clear to run the ♣T, but I assume we will be told that this loses to the J
  21. Terrible news - I first played against John 25 years ago, and have played against him a number of times since. Win or lose John was always the same, friendly, polite and totally ethical. Of course, invariably he would win because he was a great player, but it was always a pleasure to play against him. I, for one, will really miss John and I know a lot of Bridge players will feel the same. The annual Brighton Congress is just a few weeks away and it will not be the same without John. A great loss.
  22. Would partner have passed out 5C with these hands?
  23. Partner decided to double on this hand, my third choice. I'd have bid 3S, but I thought it was close given the dubious value of the K♣. I held KTx-KT9xx-QTxxx-void
  24. I bid 5C at the table, but this was not a success when it got doubled and partner drifted 3 off. Partner had KQ94-A75-Q987-62. Result from the other room was 3S off 2. I suspect both declarers could have been a trick better, but deep finesse made the limit of the hand 2C for NS, 2S for EW. Even given all the comments I not sure my bid was correct. Looking at gnashers analysis, 5C only makes 3 out of 20 and you might be able to buy this contract in 4C. If you bid 4C you can always bid 5C later if LHO bids a confident 4S. That only loses if they weren't going to double a direct 5C, but would double a delayed 5C. 4C makes them guess on a lot of hands, with 5C they just double.
