Team IMPS & safety plays:when are they worthwhile?
vang replied to Chamaco's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
i think Trumpspace pointed very well the problem. most of the time i play (very) short matches (since i didn't made yet in BB final ;-) and to loose 11 IMPs trying to gain 1 in one board would be crazy. -
1♠ automatic ;-) since there are at least 3 posters (whose knowledge and judgement i respect) who offer as argument "with 6-5 open always longer suit", i just wish to note another argument: "with 6-5, treat it as 5-5 and bid the higher suit first". i have read this in a polish book and their reasoning was that 6-5 hands are anyway hard to describe _acurately_ (i.e. to explain you are 6-5, not 5-4/6-4), because most of the time the bidding will become competitive or/and part will misunderstand you.

very nice, thanks for sharing it!

disconnected with 3001 error twice
vang replied to bestguru's topic in Support for Bridge Base Products
uh, it seems this error strikes back. i'm experiencing it using vmware-windows98-bbo 4.4.2. any suggestions? -
agree with some other posters that is not our decision. but i don't see why they think we should not express an opinion. so, imho, bots on bbo should be free. if the owners decide to ask money for that, fine, i'll not use bots.

how do you define 2-suiters? i s 5-4-3-1 a 2suiter? how about a 6-4, is this a 2suiter or a single suiter? if it's 2suiter, how do you show which suit is longer?
-
can you give us some details about that (maybe in a separate thread)? tya

in this new version, isn't the sequence 1c-1d-2c (= 4H-5+C, 11-18) difficult to handle?

Stealing a card... in which major ?
vang replied to Chamaco's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
no, it's not the same. when you open, you have better chances to win the bidding, to play the final contract, to describe your hand. when you overcall, you want to say fast what you have because the chances are that you won't be able to fully describe your hand values etc. -
ups, sorry, i have searched bbo forums for word "heeman" before posting. i shall say "a new - for me - complex" ;-)
-
a new and interesting complex over 1NT: http://www.jackbridge.com/pdf/eheeman.pdf technically better than classical stayman+trf and a great balance between complexity and efficacy. what do you think?
-
i find the question a very interesting one. some links on how such a page might look: http://www.usbf.org/formsysrosenbergmahmood.htm http://www.usbf.org/formlistsystemusbc.html

another good and free dealer is http://bridge.thomasoandrews.com/deal/

sounds reasonable, with a few problems: - 4441 (so, you might be unbalanced with only 4 card minor) - 1C-2C-2NT=15-17 is not very safe - when i tried such a system, it feels a little unconfortable to open with 1C when having AKxx Qxx AKxx xx, but this is the price, when you are balanced, you cannot choose opening minor by strength

interesting hand - interesting ruling
vang replied to han's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hilarious. you may bid 1nt with any hand since it's a LEGAL bid. td should learn the difference between an illegal bid (this is TD's problem) and a bad/unusual bid (that's your problem). -
Several bidding problems taken from yesterday
vang replied to jahol's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
1. 3D. i _might_ have a heart fit, but i'm sure i have diamond fit. 2. a simple 3C. 3. 4H. i have made a bet part has one ace ;-) 4. with two quick tricks outside our fit, yes, i pass. 5. pass. why sacrifice when i have a reasonable chance to defeat them? -
with 10-12 answer semiF 1NT. part will pass only with balanced 11-12.
-
Good idea IMHO yes, something similar is used in GO clients.

Question to Polish players about 2[DI] opening
vang replied to Gerben42's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
i'm not Polish but i guess the answer is "a ) International pressure". it's true that non-international players can ignore that, but consider that international players are the masters and if they play something else, then the people will switch to what masters play. I was a long time fan of wilkosz convention and i find banning this convention is at least incorrect. WBF should either allow wilkosz or ban multi (and any other convention with no defined suit). good reference for wilkosz: http://www.cavendish.demon.co.uk/bridge/weak.two/wilkosz.htm -
1. yes. since you defined 2C as 22+ HCP or 9+ trick, that cannot make game alone 2. no. it's 22-24. 3. yes. otherwise you'll have to jump and the bidding is already too crowded 4. yes. as i like to play, it doen't promise anything, just ask for 4 card major (you may rebid 3C with 5-6 clubs and a 4cm) 5. no. see kokish relay. 3NT show tricks, some sort of gambling but with outside stoppers. 6. don't think it's worth (2C is a rare bird). kokish relay: http://www.bridgeguys.com/Conventions/KokishRelays.html

there are many experts who use a similar system but they call it Polish club ;-)

Bidding goes P-1NT(12-14)-P-P-?
vang replied to badderzboy's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
for both sides i suppose ;-) -
i would love to have product #1, since i never had a chance to see live a big tournament. and the proposed price seems just fair to me. #2 is not so attractive for me.

Organizing system notes
vang replied to LukeG's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
i would suggest a wiki type software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki). it is very manageable, especially by multiple "editors" (for example, i'm writing about 1C/D and continuations and in the same time my part write about 1H/S; then we review each other work). though the content is in romanian, you can have a look at http://www.hq.ro/vang/dokuwiki/coco-vang_system_notes to get an ideea.
