I can't comment on my level of play. It varies. :D Just a clarification on our agreements. We had not discussed this bidding before but I was dealt that hand and had to find a bid. When I put down the dummy and West asked, my response was: "We have no agreement but I meant it to show minors" When told about the ruling, I did mention that we had no agreement, although after that session, we discussed and have one now :) Anyway, as mentioned, the ruling does not really affect anything. I'm just posting it to find out about how far out my understanding of the bridge laws (as a non TD) are. I think I have a pretty good idea now. Thanks all for your advice.

I must first make it known that I'm not a qualified TD. Indeed, when director was first called, I (South) thought the case is clear as there was really no infraction and the director seemed to concur. However, to my astonishment, I was told the next day that 3 qualified directors discussed and ruled it as a case of damage due to misinformation. The result was largely inconsequential. Just wondering if I should have appealed the ruling. Thanks all for your comments :) Any further advice will be greatly appreciated.

South meant the bid to show minors, North did not alert 2nt but when East asked about the 2NT after the 3S bid, explained the bid as "I'm not sure, no agreement" as she did not understand what it meant. West opt to dbl 3S but it proved to be an insufficent +500. EW called the director after the hand. How would you rule?

Over the last couple of days, I came across a few hands which I found some interesting bidding sequences All cases at imps, 1. ♠KQ96 ♥Q ♦Q7543 ♣J64 Favourable vul, it goes 1C on your left, partner doubles, 3C (weak) on your right. Your bid? 2. ♠AT53 ♥K8 ♦KT843 ♣86 All vul, it goes 1C on your left, partner doubles, 1H on your right. Your plan? 3. ♠93 ♥8753 ♦AKT63 ♣JT Vul vs not, once again it goes: 1C on your left, partner doubles, 3C (weak) on your right. Your plan? (a) If you pass, partner doubles again (b) If you bid 3D, partner raises to 4D For all the problems, how will your bidding plans vary if it's matchpoints instead? Thank you in advance!

Vul against not , imps You hold: AJT872 AQ JT7 Q3 You open 1S and hear the bidding go: 1S (2H) X (Pass) ? Your bid?
-
I'm not leading a heart. So it's between a high Spade and a diamond... I think matchpoints tips it enough for a diamond lead.

Imps, all vul, You hold AQ7xx KQTx xx AQ after 2 passes, RHO opened 1C. At the table I chose to double (in retrospect, perhaps a poor bid?) the bidding proceeded: Pass Pass (1C) X (1S) Pass (2C) ? what is your plan now?

[hv=n=sj653h742dk73ca76&s=sak92hqt983daq8ck]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Bidding: South opens 1H in fourth seat, North gave a simple raise and South bid the game. South declares 4H. West (rather quickly) leads the 4 of S (4th best if from length). Your thoughts?

Hi all, The following end-position came up in the last session of the Cavendish Pairs. [hv=n=skha854dj7c&w=sj73hdt54c7&e=sht7dq9ca98&s=s8hdak632c6]399|300|[/hv] No trumps, South on lead and need 5 tricks. It is not too difficult to find the winning line but what I am really interested in is what this ending is called. Hopefully some of you can shed some light ;) Thanks all!

Yah.. it is not a right bid.. but since it came up like 4 years ago.. I can claim I'm still pretty new to the game.. :P It was a fun game after all

Hehe.. I verify this is true because I was the doubler with 7 solid D :-) Btw.. your clubs were Qx opp Jx my only 3400 so far :)

Hi all, This hand came up in a team game. The players are playing a 2/1 base system. [hv=d=s&n=saktxxhxxdkxckqjx&s=sqxxhxdajxxxxcaxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] The bidding (uninterrrupted) went: 1D---1S 2D---3C 3S---4C (agreed as cuebid) 4D---4S Pass Clearly, it is desirable to be in slam. Who should have bidded differently? Thanks in advance!

How experienced are you at bridge?
bridgeboy replied to bid_em_up's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I've played for 7 years, competitively for about 5 years.. But I reckon I've played more hands than most from my country  -
[hv=v=n&n=sxhxxdxxxxcjt9xxx&w=sxxhqj98xdaqjxxca&e=sakqt9xxxhxxxdkxc&s=sjxhaktdtxckqxxxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] The Bidding was: South West North East 2C 2H 4C 5C Pass 5D Pass 5S Pass 6C Pass 6D Pass 6H Pass Pass X Pass Pass 6S X AP 2C was precision-style. -300 wasnt a success. Any way to avoid this? Thanks all!

[hv=n=saqxxxhj9xdxxckxx&s=sxhakxxxdakxxcjxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You end up in 4H (no opps bidding) West leads the Q of D. (East follows with the 9 : opps play std carding) How do you play? (S finesse works if you take it) Thanks all!

Hi all, This is not a regular partnership so we do not have very specific agreements on preempts. Based on past experience, partner's preempts will tend to be pretty classical, especially red against green. Nothing especially aggressive. Also, some posters disagreed with 3C bid on the second round. If so, what would be the preferred bid? 2NT?

Imps, Vul against not. You hold: ♠AJx ♥- ♦KJ98x ♣AT9xx You open 1D in third seat, LHO overcalls 1S, partner bids 2H (forcing if unpassed) You try a normal(?) 3C but partner continues with 3H. Your bid?

In a local game, the following happened at 2 top tables: [hv=n=sq72h76d654caj976&w=s853h9852daqjt3c2&e=s9hat3d9872ckt854&s=sakjt64hkqj4dkcq3]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] South declares 4S (typically after 1S- 2S, 4S). West led the sgl club. Both declarers misplayed it when he played small from dummy. (Only excuse is that it is late, so bear with it :) ) At one table: East took the K, returned the T of clubs. West ruffed small and returned the 8 of H, now East got it wrong by playng another club. At the other table: East took the K, returned the 8 of clubs, West ruffed small, returned the 9 of H and East got it wrong again by playing another club. Naturally, there is a lot of discussion/arguments after the match... among them: 1. Is there a difference between East's T and 8 of club return? 2. Is West's high H return suit preference? or is it showing/denying a H honour? 3. Should West ruff with a higher S to dispel hope for another trump promotion? Of course, a lot depends on the actual hand, how many tricks are needed, etc. But in general, are there any sort of 'standard' agreements for this sort of position? Thanks all for any advice :)

Thanks all for replies! The full hand was [hv=n=skxxhakjxdtxc9xxx&w=sq9xht8xdj876cjxx&e=sa8xhqxxdq9xxckxx&s=sjtxxh9xxdakxcaqt]399|300|[/hv] Both defenders chose to lead the T of H (Perhaps catering for 9x in declarer's hand) and after East won with the Q, looking at dummy's D holding, quite understandably, they continued with a H. (I suppose 8 of h would have discouraged them from doing so) I have not fully analysed the hand but I think it takes a D lead or a D switch after the Q of H to defeat the contract. (if declarer takes the right view on the hand) I was just interested in how passive one should go in such cases. I agree the book calls for a passive lead, but in view of the good breaks lying around, it does seems that if declarer has all the timing, he should be able to scramble enough tricks. Thus, I would have favoured the majority choice of a D lead.. although I really hate to lead from Jacks :(
