Low ♣ all day. RHO shows 20-21 generally, you have 11 points, that leaves 8-9 points out there somewhere. If it's passed out, you can bet LHO has no more than a 4 count, which leaves 4-5 points. Sure, it could be the K♥, or even the A♥, but unlikely. However, if your partner has even one honor in clubs, no matter if it's the King or Queen, you have a good chance of setting it now.

6♣ is probably my bid. Don't want to take a chance that partner is void in spades, and something isn't sitting right. Could be a quick down 1 in 6NT.

Well, there's your LAW. I didn't have my copy of the book around, so I couldn't find it. Thanks kgr. I think the difference would be determined by whether or not the card was put down and before even a pause, it was swooped back up in to his hand versus having the card down there for 2-3 seconds, then bringing it back up for a change. It's one of those decisions you have to make as a director, ask all the people at the table, then pull the declarer away to ask him questions.

amen, Fred. If it's one thing I cannot stand it's psyche at the club level. I don't care and can tolerate/workaround psyches at tournament level. It is when I bring out a brand new player and I am trying to teach them the basics of bridge and somebody decides they will open 1♥ with a void in hearts and screw everything up. This is where the new player goes "what just happened there?" and I have to explain to them that they psyched you. I remember once, the bidding went 1C (Dbl) 1H(!!!!) ? - Partner doubles, 1H is overcalled, I have 6 hearts in my hand, there is no way he was bidding 1H with 4 of them. So I bid 4H over it, passed out, making 5. I was right and the expert looks at me and says "You got lucky", well I'm sorry, you are the one who got lucky. So our club has a "Psyche Book". We allow 1 psyche a night per person, if it exceeds this, they get added to the book where people can see that they psyche a lot and to factor that in to their bidding/playing. To work off of Fred's words -- At the tournament level, it's fine, it's highly competitive. However, at the club level, to encourage new players and to keep people coming back, you will always want to cater to the majority FIRST, laws second.

That's not entirely correct. There is a little thing called "change of thought". If the declarer puts the card down on the table and in the same motion puts it back in to his hand, it is NOT considered played. HOWEVER, if the declarer puts the K of spades down, and then in his mind goes "oops, I should have played the J of spades" and switches it to the J of spades, that is a "change of thought" and at this point, the director should be called, the declarer will most likely be taken away from the table to be asked his justification for switching the card and whether it was done in the same motion. If it was not done in same motion, the original card stands as played.

Exactly. It's too bad we can't exercise the "Special" adjustment command online, because that was exactly what I was thinking too. A- for both sides works fine in this case, because the damage has affected both sides and the results could have been completely different.

Bidding to get to the grand slam...
jdulmage replied to jdulmage's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Grands are not avoided when you have to take a single finese. I could see if it relied on two fineses, but one? Out of I think the 12-13 grand slams I have bid in my life, at least 5 of them relied on a finese. But ok, I guess the "panel" as we will call it would rather play 6NT. -
7♥ is the clear cut winner, you can pitch club loser on A♦ and it appears like all 4 aces are yours, so he has the A♥ probably doubleton. This hand is a laydown after ruffing some stuff (if you need to that is)
-
Just 4NT him if you play RKC, if you don't, you may opt to bid 5♥ showing a heart control. You already denied a heart fit, so it can't possibly be to play.
-
Yeah, play Ogust.
-
Bid 3♥ and it will pass out. I don't see any other choice here.

While I was directing the Friday Night Non-Life Master game, on board 8, this hand came up. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sj109xxhj10xxxxd8c9&w=saqxxhakd9xcakjxx&e=s87h97dakqj10xcxxx&s=skxhqxxdxxxxcq10xx]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] Most people were playing in 6♦ or 6NT, but nobody seemed to find 7NT. I have my ways of finding it by opening 2♣ first and once partner with ♦AKQJ10x will bid 3♦ over 2♣ and I'm sure we will get there. I asked another good player who said he would open 1♣, but I am torn between options. What would you do? It's your call.

gambling your masterpoints!
jdulmage replied to scoob's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
LMFAO. That's the most outright silliest comment I have seen on this forum in a long time. Masterpoints are *NOT* for experts? Some of us enjoy getting awarded masterpoints, winning trophies and races and so forth. I can honestly tell you I would not travel around and play in tournaments and pay *THAT* much money if nothing was awarded out of it. The idea of saying "I've achieved something" is really good for the health. I'm only 20 years old, got my life masters when I was 19. Now I teach others how to play and compete professionally whenever I can. So what you are saying is because I enjoy masterpoints and like to think of them as "achievements", especially in tournament play, that I am automatically NOT an expert? Your comment is a generalization and frankly, a stereotype. Get your facts straight. -
gambling your masterpoints!

silliest thing in the world. Let's put our masterpoints on the line so two people can be wired throughout the entire tournament, win the masterpoints and become life masters in one game. Whoever thought this should be taken around back and shot. Some of us appreciate winning masterpoints to say they have achieved something. Trophies, awards, masterpoint races. That is, if you have any heart for serious card play. -
I would have to agree with you on this one. 5♥ is clearly one of those (choose a slam) hands. It can't be anything else.

you play ace of spades (1), ten of diamonds, holds (2), let's pretend that east pitches a spade away on the diamond. now you play ak of clubs (4), ruff a club (5). now you play a of hearts (6), k of hearts (7), ruff a heart (8). you end up on dummy, play k of spades (9), now play 3 of clubs off of board, ruffing with 7 of diamonds, overruffed by the 9 of diamonds. hand ends up like this. dealer: north vul: e/w scoring: imp ♠ 4 ♥ ♦ aq ♣ ♠ ♥ q ♦ k6 ♣ ♠ q9 ♥ j ♦ ♣ &s=s3hd54c]399|300|Scoring: IMP South plays 6DLead: spade jack[/hv] Hand will make if he plays the Heart, which he may. But about the only chance you have.
