Are you able to play bbo on the i-pad3? If so, how do you go about installing it onto the i-pad3?
-
The ACBL I understand makes penalty doubles below 4♥'s alertable. I have not been able to find reference to this in the Laws or alert publications. Can someone verify this and give the refernces that show this.
-
I understand that the correction period depends on when in the tournament the problem arose - between hands, between rounds, or at the end of the session.
-
The auction goes 1♣ ... P ... 1NT ... 2♣. The 1♣was announced as 'may be short'. The question is in ACBLland; Is the 2♣ natural or Michael's for the majors?

It's a lot easier to read what authors; such as Mel Colchamiro in his book 'How to Play Like an Expert...', have to say as they usually outline these situation in orderly patterns.

I believe it is a given that if you are going to score across the field in multi-sectional games by combining the sections that: 1st each section needs to be playing the same boards and 2nd that the strats in each sections need be balanced to some degree. A lot of clubs around here lack the means to generate hand records for duplication. This is the main reason combined scoring is rarely done. Even in special events, when hand records are provided, clubs shy away from combining sections. I'd like opinions on the merit of combined scoring vs just eventing a game to obtain an overall rankings. In paticular the impact it has on the novice/intermediate players.

Bridge has no allure to big $ like poker or golf so young adults who are 20ish have little interest in investing time and effort into an activity that appears to have no possibility of a career or profession no matter how good they become at it. Uday has the right approach by appealing to the 40-60 age bracket first. They are career and fiancial secure enough to pursue what is deemed a leasurely past time. Children as early as grade three are capable of learning bridge. I'm sure that one ex-primary teacher and par excellent bridge author will attest to this. Attention span can be an issue and extra motivation is a prerequist. Bridge doesn't have to be complicated at this stage. Get them to enjoy the game with a simplified version. Jude Goodwin's book, Teach Me to Play, is a great resource if it was updated to today's SAYC's weak approach and made available for reproduction to educators. The ACBL has addressed the school age group but needs to sell the program to school boards. School boards in general shy at enrichment programs that entail cards. They do not however with chess. Chess therefore reaches far more young people than does bridge. It takes an adament bridge player in the educational field to promote bridge and sell it. Toronto and area has such a person with a great program. Attend the Toronto Easter Regional and you'll see just how successful Flo has been. This is one reason District 2 has appointed her as Education Corrodinator.

;) What is the best way to makeup the boards when you have 17½ tables and you need 2 sections?

:D In the auction 1♥, p, 1NT ... Is 1NT alertable because the pair uses flannery in their bidding system and they are could be skipping a 4 card ♠ suit? I know that in the auction 1♥, p, 1♠... If the ♠ bid promises 5 ♠'s, then the 1♠ is alertable. Base your answer to these auctions as they pertain to ACBLand :) .

It appears to me that there is a need for a remedial course in the Principles of Full Disclosure 101. Cascade and blackshoe seem to be the only ones who are on track.

I'm surprised that someone didn't address this situation as a 'very light overcall' and if they hadn't prealerted their competetive style at the start of the round, then a procedural warning would be in order. An adjustment is a possibility but not likely. Destructive bidding is not an issue here.

Sorry, I should have been more exact. The 2 ♣'s opener by the opposition did show a strong hand (19+hcpts) and the 2NT was an overcall by partner.
-
:P Please, help me understand this simple auction. After a 2♣ opener, what should 2NT by partner mean?

Obsession with rating
ehhh replied to zasanya's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Ratings are an honesty issue. Generally you feel more comfortable playing 'with your own kind' though playing up as in golf will help you improve your game so long as 'up' isn't so high as to embarrass yourself. I note everyone I play with as their rating readily becomes apparent. As such, ratings as nebulous as they are, are just a benchmark no more no less but nevertheless in the cyberspace of bridge necessary as they are in ftf. -
I need to ask this question
ehhh replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
 You skipped over BRONZE Life Master .... and some of these also perceive themself to be 'expert' though I do find them more down to earth than most others (life master has sunk in and loaftier titles are a long way off)! -
A new suit by an unpassed hand in abcland is 100% forcing...if it can be passed then it is alertable.
-
:P If partner WJS to your opener, and with opps silent, I'm miffed that noone in ACBLand pointed out that this is far from standard and is definitely alertable whether you are playing sayc or 2/1.
-
:o Whether online or f2f, don't u feel players will shoot on the last round or 2 if they think they need good bds to recover or to save face. It won't matter if the boards are rotated or not!

This was e-mailed 2me by an friend. His way of describing the events I thot might be amuse the club director out there. Hi: You would not have believed yesterday afternoon: You'll get a chuckle out of visualizing the state of my blood pressure...lol I showed up to direct and play with Shirleyanne (SA). Then: Dick showed up without a partner Plan A: match him up with SA Then: Dorothy got confused about the date and showed up to direct Plan B: match her up with Dick and I'm back to playing with SA Then: At game time Jerry, Bob's partner (Jack) and Sine's partner (Dave ) are all missing. Plan C, D, E: Match Sine up with Dick Match SA up with Bob Hope Jerry arrives a few minutes late as he often does I can direct and Dorothy can go shopping. (we'd have made half a table) Then: Jerry arrives a couple of minutes late as you expect mid way through the first round, Jack arrives. Plan F: put Jack in with Bob and make SA and Dorothy a bumping pair I don't give a rat's ass if SA plays board one twice (once in each direction) If Dave arrives b4 the end of the 1st rd, the bump can go, that pair becomes 15NS I can play with him and we'll have 15 full, us being 15EW If he's later than that, I hope he enjoys shopping (he never does arrive) The game then moves at glacial speed, losing maybe 15 min over the day Could not get them to play anywhere near close to on time After the 4th rd Marlene is not feeling well and askes to go home Plan G: I fill in and play with Margaret (Marlene's partner) Later, as is your norm, you announce "Three rounds to go; two rounds to go, and last round" This, you will discover, does not help With one round to go A pair says " I guess we're all done. Our opponents went home" Plan F: We find the missing pair in the parking lot and restore order...we think.....'cause meanwhile another player goes home leaving Helen partnerless for the last round; needless to say, I'm going to be quite late getting to the last round Jan and Val have last round sitout as they are bumped Plan G: Have Jan play the last round with Isabel Plan H (4 Hell): Have Val play the last round with Margaret and i can start to get at the scores...some of which are coming in before i can even think of getting to the last round. 4:20 PM. It is scored up and you're out the door Another day at the bridge club....lol At least nobody died. ps And to top it off, I miscounted spades (in fact i didn't count them at all) and went down in a cold slam. Imagine that!

If you had a way of asking partner to bid NT if s/he has a ♥ stopper then further decision making would be a lot easier would it not?

Vulnerability switch on - nonvulnerable swith off!

:P If a pair uses the unusual 2nt as a means to show any 2 suiter (they do not use michael), is it alertable (acbl)? Generally it goes like this: After the 2nt overcall, the partner would begin by bidding up the line with their best suit & and if there was no fit, the overcaller corrects by bidding up the line their suit. The partner now knows his partner's other suit and can correct if necessary.

What's my motivation?
ehhh replied to Al_U_Card's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
:P online provides us unlimited opportunity to hone systems between tournies and club sessions -
;) But what distresses me is the fact that no one seems to want to delineate when a psyche becomes a destructive bid and when it does how does one go about handling it!
