  1. odd... initially i was unable to kib remaining boards .. tried again and allowed ..??
  2. with 'kibs disallowed' ... players from the 1st completed half of a match are unable to kib the remaining boards of a match .. logically a bug ... maybe difficult to 'fix' ..
  3. Hi I'd like to bid, but dont like any of the possible bids.. something tells me i sh pass Rgds Dog
  4. Hi ..possible 4.0.8 bug? .. Trying to edit personal profile details .. country disappeared. Clicking on country now shows empty drop-down list, so no country can be selected and change cannot be commited. XP pro platform, latest patch sets applied. Rgds Dog
  5. hi all ..as an acol fan i must reply to this thread. It is probably the most difficult 'natural' system to play. 'Modern' Acol methods including 5-card majors and weak-2 are an abortion and totally corrupt the basic ideals of the system. There are definitely weaknesses in the system, but also strengths ,, it is a difficult system to learn because is completely dependant upon the twin ideals of a weak 1NT and a strong 2-bid. I would NEVER teach a beginner ACOL because y must be a player before y can play Acol .. but would NEVER teach the rubbish mish -mash of 'modern' Acol with weak 2s and 5-card majors..this is grossly inferior to 2/1 and precision ( IMHO .. i cant runt 10million deals to prove it!) Rgds Dog
  6. HI ALL Fred .. i think yr methods are excellent and I am studying them in a desperate effort to improve... but no holy grail .. the fact that we cannot reach a concensus about methods is the only thing that makes continuing to play the game worth the trouble. Rgds all Dog
  7. the bidding is awful ... but that's why so few of us have one of those yellow spikey things Rgds dOG
  8. hi all being a sad person i play a lot of indi's .. the results are rarely to my liking, so the ability to adjust the occassional -1400 to an avg+ would be welcome.. please advise :)) RgdS Dog :(
  9. hi Fred ..Happy birthday.. hope to see you in Ireland sometime ..y will be VERY welcome rgds Dog
  10. Hi All .. esp Fred and other site administrators .. I have not used the 'abuse' mechanism because we have so many new players but the frequency and 'level' of rudeness on-site has been outrageous recently. I have had several team games and table games disrupted because of outrageous comments from p or opps. I am reluctant to use the 'abuse' mechanism because we have so many new members who are maybe accustomed to other sites. Anyone how knows me will know that i can mix it in any company .. but maybe a reminder to all about site rules will do. From today I will report all site outrages even thought it against my philosophy to do so. This is not my style .. but BBO's laid back and friendly attitude is being abused .. i will from now on report all site violations .. sry all .. i am not a policeman but enough is enough rgds Dog
  11. hi ..3NT most of our values in H .. if p has 5+ spades we will hear about it. I think control of H more important than 4-4 S fit on control-free hand Rgds Dog
  12. ok Guys (and gals) ..someone has to do it ..speak the unspeakable word.. FLANNERY Rgds Dog
  13. Dear Ben .. neat idea ..but it'll never catch on :D The (unsporting) idea of counting to 13 is hard enough ..now y want us to devide by 4 and then try to remember what the remainder tells us. Rgds Dog
  14. Just to confirm .. i got the same problem. Gotta login every time ..password NOT 'remembered'. (XP pro latest SP's applied). Also ..is this the right place to ask about those irritating non-funny funnies that appear under poster's name on every post. Not a serious problem i guess , but they are irritating and add NOTHING to the forum. Rdgs Dog.
  15. I think double is 'optional' .. ie suggesting we defend but leaving the final decision to p. His bidding so far suggests a min neg double (8+hcp) with red cards. Surely the X of 1nt suggests no great red-suit fit but enough HCP to expect to beat 1nt.. our fit hasnt improved since then so primary interest must be penalty. Rgds, Dog
  16. for your info.. Tempo is a small town in the sticks in N.Ireland Culbertson is considered a bit revolutionary there.. so the phrase 'bidding in tempo' has a rather different and unpredictable meaning for those of us from this outpost of the Empire. Rgds Dog
  17. whot's this 'Milton' guy got to do with bridge .. i tht he was an arty farty poet ... rgds Dog
  18. hi I dont see how y can open this 1S unless yr system is tailored to deal with light opening bids. Dont care for 2S either with such a poor suit.. but at least doesnt distort the strength of the hand. (call me old-fashioned ;) ) Rgds Dog
  19. hi .. isnt 'gladiater' what Hanibal Lecter says after polishing off a female victim? Rgds Dog
  20. Hi .. the player on your left is probably going to bid 2s if he got 13 cards ..so if you pass it wont get easier  So y gotta bid ..probably X unless y play Ben/Misho's excellent Eq stuff. Rgds Dog B)
  21. hi .. Real Acol (ie NOT benji ) is ridiculously difficult for beginners to learn, since it depends so much on inferences that you cannot easily explain to them. 2/1 probably similar since y need a raft of gadgets to play it sensibly. Benji Acol nearly as bad as SAYC except it got a weak NT. So what's left?.. .. first system I learned was Neapolitan Club .. (& it never done me no harm :) ) ..which is slightly easier than 'An Introduction to Topology'.. so what else? ..precision ? sayc looks easy to start with even though it's horrible... Rgds Dog. :)
  22. having played weak NT a lot, i sympatise with Ron's idea about 5-4 ok when pts in the short suits .. in practice tho i feel that they often dont play well in 1nt, even if it looks right. I'd probably still do it tho ..but only cos it's better than a pass :) Rgds Dog..
  23. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=sq10865hk2dq2caq102&s=sk7haj3dak43ckj93]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] hi ..this from N.Ireland Pairs final session. y play 6nt after 3D pre-empt by East. Y get favourable lead of small H to your J. Club to Q and small S off table.. 9,K,Ace ..West exits a club ..east discarding.. what now? E/W are 'experienced' but not very strong players .. why didnt W return S to test you early? Rgds Dog <_<
  24. hi all.. An article in an esteemed national newspaper last weekend got me thinking about the various projects that were/are afoot to provide multi-lingual capabilites on BBO.. the article stated that the common English phrases 'deep fine leg' and 'flashing outside one's off-stump' were impossible to translate into modern Flemish. Perhaps those of you with multi-lingual skills (eg Slothy) would care to comment on how similar difficulties might arise regarding bridge terminology. Rgds Dog
  25. Hi I agree entirely with 'jtfanclub' ..you'll get more out of your p when he/she thinks there are only 2 opponents at the table :D If y have a regular p, y should discuss yr bidding 'style' ..then X's like this wont happen OR y will be aware that it's possible. Also agree that opening 2S is the modern style tho I dont care much for it myself. Rgds Dog
