Who plays gambling nt
dogsbreath replied to Badmonster's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hi the usefullness / frequency of all bids should be a concern of any regular p'ship, but anomalies seem to occur.. With my 'live' p , we play 2S opening as 5-5 S+minor weak.. in 3 years of play I have yet to have a 2S opening .. on the rare occassions when I have the right hand, either p or opps have opened the bidding. Does this mean the bid has no use? i dont know .. i know that our use of the bid is not uncommon, but in practice it's been a complete waste and would have been better used to 'unload' our multi 2D opening. We also play gambling 3nt and havent had one of those either :) Rgds Dog -

hi i also had strange behaviour with 4.3.5 today .. dont know if related to connection issue.. had just completed tourney 896 and clicked on results .. just as the next tourney i was entered in started.. i was taken to the tourney but NOT to the table where my name was shown, and could not join table. I logged off and re-connected ..was now taken to 'my' table, but could not see or make any bids. Have had a lot of 'connection' issues recently even tho on cable connection. XP Pro, latest service patches instaled. Rgds Dog

What's my motivation?

Hi my mum will be very surprised to find that i play on-line bridge.. she thinks I''m still in jail. Rgds Dog :) -
3nt, 4h, 5c and 6c all look possible contracts. 3C looks like a good move. I suppose someone has a cool conventional bid to show a 6-4 game-going hand with void in p's suit :) Rgds Dog

1S .. because i cant catch up later .. p will never believe i pass this hand. (could try a sneaky 2D FLANNERY but dont care for off-shape off-card bids) Rgds Dog (my live p DOES have a sense of humour .. we DO play Flannery ;) ;)

"Shooting" in the last round of an individual?
dogsbreath replied to epeeist's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
hI Hope you enjoy your Oz trip. As for the beer.. it's generally awful on the big island, but at least is served cold in even the most humble establishment. If you come from the USA you wont notice any drop in standard anyhow ;) If you get to Tasmania, 'Cascade' is pleasant enough. If beer quality is critical element in your holiday, you are in the wrong continent .. try Europe Rgdds Dog :) -
Do you have to explain your bid?
dogsbreath replied to vbcastor's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hi there is over-expectation from some players as to what info they should get. If i have an arrangement (implicit or not) that a 2D opening is 6-10 hcp with 6+ diamonds then i should alert eg: "6+ Diamonds 6-10 HCP, may contain a 2nd suit" However, i do NOT alert differently on the hands where i do have a 2nd suit, nor tell the opp which 2nd suit is held. (because my p does not have this info, the opps are not entitled to know either). Rgds Dog -
DO U OPEN AND IF SO, WHAT?

hi ...those of a sensitive nature ..turn away now.. Flannery .. Rgds Dog  -
hi if declarer is 18/19 balanced he needs the help of a good psychologist. 1nt shows that hand (possibly). In this auction he has running tricks AND good HCP despite p's pass of 1c (5/6 small?). Consequently the X is takeout ..p can convert with C suit held (ie: opp is a lunatic) Rgds Dog

i dont think my p bids 2D here on tram-tickets. X is penalty and looks like a fair shot.. where are their tricks on my trump lead(S) I think pass is for wimps  Rgds Dog

The Solution to all your System woes
dogsbreath replied to Double !'s topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hi there was a simpler version of this idea in common use in Ireland in the days of spoken bidding (in the 70's) It was known as the forcing 1 Club system.. the opening bids were .. 'club' .. minimum opening hand with clubs ..responder needs 15+ for game 'a club' ..good opening bid with clubs .. game invite '1 club' .. strictly forcing ..need not contain a club suit. ..this was widely considered to be a fair response to the new-fangled strong 1c systems (like Neapolitan and Blue Club) for those disinclined to search for a bookshop or learn to read. full session tournament
dogsbreath replied to pigpenz's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi .. although i voted 'for' .. it will still likely be tiresome to play in. In team matches, where speed of play is generally much faster, 16-board matches often run into problems (leavers etc) 8 mins per board is still (imo) much too slow for on-line play and all tourneys seem to run at the convenience of the slowest players (complicated by subbing problems). Rgds Dog -
Hi ..despite the best efforts of Tds, tournament play is still painfully slow. I know that searching for subs is a contributary factor, but not the sole reason.. I think that a contributary factor is players immediately use of 'Movie' on completion of a hand.. delaying action on the next.. evidence is the frequent long delays before bidding starts on 2nd board of a set.. ..how about greying-out 'Movie' button till the round complete? (on a per-table basis ideally) Rgds Dog

hi Misho .. very belated HB greetings ... where are you? you are interesting player .. we miss you Rgds og

Is no-one taking this thread seriously? I am SO frustrated .. I'm off to chew my bowl again. Rgds Dog :)

Hi .. ,,when 'kibbers disallowed' in a team game, players at the table that finishes first are unable to watch the remaining boards at the other table. I suggest that team-members should not be regarded as random kibbers and should be allowed to join . (no idea why 'no kibbers' set in the first place :) ) Rgds Dog
-
Hi .. I agree ... they are pointless, dull, and become increasing irritating screen dross .. what are they for??? please remove permanently and promptly Rgds Dog
-
..hi again apologies .. the data shows no.of tables ..not number of matches Rgds Dog
-
hi ..maybe not new but i've just noticed that the summary screen (in 'Play Bridge') shows inaccurate number of teams/players .. no big deal. Neat features in new versions ..ty Dog
