Hi .. Fred .. are you claiming some part in Reese's demise? rgds Dog

How to define an expert
dogsbreath replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hi there's more to bridge than match-pointed pairs rgds Dog -
hi.. try coaching a beginner or intermediate for a while .. you my find it helps clarify your thought processes as you strive to keep things simple for your p. Rgds Dog
-
Hi ..maybe the event determines wether benefit would be obtained from drug-taking. In Ireland it considered madness or sheer bravado to play a Mixed Pairs event without prior liberal application of alcohol. :P Rgds Dog

hi 15-17 opposite 7 with no known fit .. how many bids you guys make on this filth? Rgds Dog
-
hi Removing 3NT is a bridge crime.. y opened thin , have shown 2 suits and p freely bids 3nt.. Taking out 3nt here is a slam try for me ... which slam you fancy? ... also start looking for a new p .. you'll be all alone soon. Rgds Dog :)
-
hi ALWAYS accept if y have what p asked you for ..otherwise you'll be looking for a new p sooner than you had planned. I dont like xxxx in the trial suit and xxx even Jxx is also a weak holding. In marginal situations holding a 4th trump is a very strong indication to accept the invite. Rgds Dog

hi looks to me like a passive lead not only inadequate but hard to determine what is passive!.... if i chose to attack it will be Q♣ ..p doesnt rate to have much and this may protect our club holding .. additionally, as i seem to hold the entries it's possible we find a club ruff if p has the 'magic' Jx holding. I have to admit i might not actually lead this at the table :)) Rgds Dog

4-card majors, 5-card majors, and canape'
dogsbreath replied to Winstonm's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
hi my team-mates play Canape within a modified Blue Club system with considerable success. ( canape is an inherent element of Blue Club). ..so I dont think this is a new idea but i have no idea of it's effectiveness -v- alternate methods. Rgds Dog -
2 incidents of incorrect behaviour in version 4.7.9 1: at table-game with three others who have not upgraded yet .. bidding settled in 2C X'd after a simple auction (no undos etc). Board was played apparently normally but when i looked at Movie the board was scored as 'Passed Out'! .. the other 3 players saw the correct contract and score.. my displayed running imp score was also different to that seen by the other players (i asked them to check having seen irregularity with the contract score) We played a session of more than 20 boards without noticing anything else wrong. My p throughout was 'OliverC' if that helps in tracing the board. 2: I was kibbing at a tourney Fri Night (possibly FOT, not sure) .. when after an auction in which an UNDO during the bidding was requested and accepted.. the player who would have been dummy had the undo not occurred complained immediately after the opening lead that he could see his partners cards displayed. The TD was 'ecepal' who was called to the table ..dont know if/how the problem was resolved.. this was NOT a 'table joke' .. i believe from the chat that the incident was genuine. Rgds Dog.

hi 1nt for me. It's the only bid that partener will understand in the balancing position.. will expect 4-card + Spades for a X and more shape for a 2D bid Rgds Dog

re fred's post above.. 'But you are right that I feel pretty strongly that, if you have to go through Stayman to invite in notrump with no 4-card major, that you should never use that sequence (just guess between passing 1NT and bidding 3NT).' .... Is/should your approach be affected by who your partner is? I ask this because one of my 'live' partners routinely accepts ALL invites :) ..as this makes 'invitational' sequences somewhat redundant it seems sensible to find some other use for the bid. Rgds Dog

dear Hotshot.. Evolution is wonderful .. in nature it created the SeaHorse and in bridge it created irish keyCard Gerber . Partnerships evolve or stagnate. Rgds Dog :)
-
hi I hate 'master-minding' the auction .. very destructive of partnership confidence. The only bid available to me without special p'ship agreements is 1NT , so thats what i bid. Rgds Dog

hi Uday.. I regularly have what sounds like a similar 'problem' .. never bothered to report it since there is an easy work-around and no-one else seemed to be 'suffering' from it. .. If i get logged-off for 'inactivity', or occassionally when I lose connection, the client 'stub' Netbridgeview.exe does not 'die'' . Clicking on the BBO icon then starts a second instance of netbridgeview.exe. The symptoms are severe system degredation on my machine .. maybe different symptoms on other people's hardware. After any 'unusual' disconnect I simply click up the Task Manager window and check for Netbridgeview.exe .. and kill the process(es) if it/they exist ..before attempting to re-connect to BBO .. this always fixes the problem. The task-manager always shows 0 or close to 0 system-idle in this situation. The first time I tried this, it took ages for the task-manager to appear (probably 'cos the machine thrashing!) and i had several copies of netbridgeview.exe running.. so a machine with a lower amount of RAM may behave differently I guess. I'm usually connected from a P4 laptop with 1Gb RAM , XPpro with latest patch-set applied. If i attempt to shutdown the machine when this situation does exist, i get a Windows error msg about the 'stub' and have to kill it manually ..unfortunately I dont have the exact msg to hand.. will look for it if it's important. This looks like an XP error/problem to me since your server can hardly 'kill' processes on my machine.. I've seen similar situations on Unix servers when a client dies or terminates abnormally ..fixed by some TCP/IP config option .. maybe some difference in user's Windows config contributes to this issue but I have no expertise in this area .. hi dark horse? Nagy/Richman in the top 3. Bob wont have to remember a system. If he can remember what contract he's playing they'll get a few tops. Rgds Dog
-
hi Yes .. i did try 'A' but no noticible effect on my PC .. ie did NOT 'fix' the problem. sry for not mentioning this in prev post Rgds dog
-
Thanks Fred .. changing to BROWSER_TYPE=E works for me (XP Pro,latest service pack) Rgds Dog
-
hi ..i was about to report this also ...glad to see it already resolved.. however there's another small problem .. the pop-up window that appears when y try to enter a MTB tourney appears to have 'links' to Internet Explorer .. eg: clicking on 'click here to deposit....' causes a long hang followed by a windows error-msg box .. probably because I use Netscape (IE6 IS on my pc ,but hasnt worked for months since a Microsoft 'Automatic Update' nearly wrecked my pc :) ) Rgds Dog

hi I've tried several of the introductory tourneys and the sofware seems to work fine. However , i just dont see the point .. total points with everyone playing different hands seems a complete lottery and will not induce me to pay to play .. sry i may be missing something but it seems completely pointless to me. Bidding problem
dogsbreath replied to dogsbreath's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
hi Thanks for interesting replies. at the table the 4D overcaller held a rather robust.. ♠ - ♥: Kxxx ♦: AKj10xxxx ♣:x opener's partener rather spoiled the hand by making a very long pause over 4D holding.... ♠: 109xx ♥: xx ♦: xx ♣: xxxxx Opener subsequently re-opened with a X and the hand was played in 5C  Rgds Dog
