Edit: I've been playing about with this hand in the editor and it seems as long as the hearts behave the contract is 100% because of the myriad of squeeze possibilities. I can only assume GIB saw everything and calculated from the bidding that it wouldn't make any difference to duck whereas any human would surely cover to give declarer the opportunity to make a mistake.

Not a jump shift because of the preempt interference. It was an Indy so to minimize any misunderstanding or risk partner passing I took a stab at 4♠ directly.

Have to say I immensely enjoyed the automatic robot 2 Day Survivor Tournament on BBO recently. Most hands had ways to misplay, planning the play was crucial and there was no time pressure. Will there be any more of these? Apologies if there is an existing thread about this I couldn't find it.

'please don't use abusive language'
Gazumper replied to wank's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Can TD's not see private messages at the table in between hands? I was playing in a zero tolerance indy tournament and the TD announced that whispers could be reviewed after reports of abuse. -
Unlucky, this reminds me of when a slow player gets reported the the TD, just as the TD arrives at the table the slow player wakes up and bids. It's now your turn and when you take more than 3 seconds the TD thinks it's you being slow, they do a countdown and even when you play in time you are promptly booted. There's nothing you can do.

Sometimes you can draw inferences from the opps refusal of the claim. You state "top tricks" and when they decline the claim you draw another round of trumps to be "safe" when you might otherwise not have.

GIB decided to bid none and pass. There were 4 robots in that seat in the Express tournament and they all bid the same way, a pass followed by a jump overcall. Only one robot then continued to bid all the way to the 5 level due to East's takeout double on the first round. Sorry about the title, I was concentrating on getting the hand viewer done.

When I was brought into a Goulash tourney as a sub I automatically inherited the results of the boards played by the person I subbed and I had to start from a 40% average result going into board 7. This doesn't make any sense since most of the time you're subbing someone who left due to bad boards and this harms your overall BBO tournament average. It also discourages people from subbing into a tournament especially in the late stages.

Why isn't there any rubber bridge at BBO?
Gazumper replied to Jojask's topic in General BBO Discussion
When I first learned bridge all I played was rubber and I miss some of the plays involved. Scoring above and below the line, tallying scores and making mandatory doubles and all that. Great days. -
When leaving BBO sometimes I click Log off and sometimes I close the browser tab without logging off first. Is there any difference between two like does closing the page leave the connection to BBO hanging at all? Closing the tab is also much quicker and requires only one action, first world problems I know.

It doesn't happen every time so it's hard to reproduce but quite often (about 50% of the time or less) the flash plugin will crash between when an Express tournament ends and before the scoreboard pops up. The scoreboard will still pop up on top of the crashed screen where you have the option to send a crash report. I only recall it happening after Express tournaments and if it helps the last time it happened I was switched to another tab. In fact I think only happens if I switch tabs before the scoreboard appears. The OS is Windows 7, the browser is Firefox which is fully up to date along with flash but it's been happening for a few months.

In the web version the mouse cursor changes when dragging around the window frames. However, if you are in the middle of a drag when a tournament pops the mouse cursor remains stuck in the same graphic and there seems no way to get it to revert to the standard arrow without logging out and refreshing the window. It's particularly annoying because the drag cursor is also far less responsive which makes you prone to misclicks.

Currently when an express tourney is full with 4 minutes to go before it starts there is still a chance to get a spot if someone leaves. However you need to be very quick on the mouse because as soon as the number of registrations drops to 79 (when someone leaves) it immediately rises to 80 because several people around the world are spamming the register button to get that potential spot. I suggest a reserve list for express tourneys which would alleviate this problem. Top of the list replaces the next player to leave, that's fair and we don't have to spam the register button in competition for a potential spot before the tournament starts.

These were auto-alerts by GIB. So after 6♦ GIB knows I have 3 key cards and has all the information to safely bid the grand but it didn't.

Beware of GIB creating a losing option
Gazumper replied to MrAce's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
GIB has no nerves hehe, it does often like to play the highest card it can afford instantly when discarding and you can't glean any information from it. -

On the last diamond trick I am squeezed. According to GIB, if I'd covered the Q♠ they wouldn't have been able to make the overtrick, alas I am not world class.

Does bridge have a game theory optimal solution to maximize IMPS? In other words is there an optimal unexploitable way for a partnership to play in any given situation that is indifferent to the opps strategy. Does a perfect GIB exist? There would be no bidding convention as such, all alerts are simply, "I have selected a bid from a range of possible bids and matching probabilities according to optimal game theory to maximize our IMPS", which is how the partnership understands it. Same goes for carding. What if you didn't know your partner but you knew he/she was a perfect logician and would thus deduce the perfect strategy you would both be using? Multiple possible solutions would make this interesting.

Claim rejection led him to make wrong play
Gazumper replied to Gazumper's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
He made some remark 'you are a liar' and I answered it so the banter went from there. He didn't know. -

I am sitting South and refuse the claim after about a second. Now the fun part. East (an Expert) tanks for a few seconds and ruffs high thus promoting my Q♠ into the setting trick. He starts drawing trumps, sees the situation, stalls, calls me a 'liar' and tells me I was not correct to refuse the claim. A few moments later he quits the table. He is the one who made the claim it is not my fault if he inferred the wrong information from my refusal, he dug a hole for himself. Had he not claimed he would have probably ruffed low and made the contract. Am I supposed to accept the claim?? Was the tempo in which I refused the claim ethical? Is bridge evolving this way? I even fear there maybe bad TD's out there who would rule in his favour!

Is it not possible for the news items to open in a new tab in the same window? My browser options say this is what should happen. Is a limitation of Flash?

Enough points but awkward bid
Gazumper posted a topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion

Couldn't decide what to bid after the weak 2♦ preempt, GIB was my partner and 2S apparently showed 5+ spades and it leapt to 4♠. A takeout double I presumed would show tolerance for all suits but I only had 2 hearts. Any advice on this one? 4♥ would have made easily and 4♠ always goes down one with best defense I think. -
During a recent Indy tournament the TD said that failure to alert conventional bids could lead to a penalty. I then said that bids should also be explained to your own partner in that case and the TD disagreed. This doesn't make any sense to me. This was an Indy tournament with no pre agreements, if opps don't understand a conventional bid why should they get an explanation and my partner not? What if I want to make a bid based on judgement and I don't hold the exact requirements for my explanation? Do I have to tell the contents of my hand to avoid a penalty? Ludicrous. Well I said my piece.
