When I was 20 I wasn't dreaming about bridge hands. Well maybe I did. :D I pass 6♥ and discuss what a 6♥ bid means afterward. Dreams of ♥ Q and no other Q. Interesting.Freud would have found it significant.

Ty all.I see now that 5♦ is easily is the worst bid if the agreement is “dbl is takeout and P can convert it to penalty.” This raises another issue.Suppose after I open 1♦, LHO has void/single or even dbltn ♥.and decides to psyche 4♥ with the not unreasonable expectation that I and my P have a ♥ fit. When op bids 4♥ over my 1♦ there are 4 possibilities. (1)My P has few points and weak hearts. (2)My P has few points but they are in ♥ (3)My P has points and weak ♥. (4)My P has points and strong ♥ I have already announced points.I may have strength in ♥ or I may not have.If I do not have strength and length ♥ I double .But if I have strength in ♥ I pass and simply collect undoubled penalty. Now suppose I open 1♦ and P has # 2 or #4 type of hand he will not double. If I too have strength in ♥ I too cannot double and op gets away scot free with his psyche when me and my P have game or slam in ♥.If me or my P do dbl then he bids his suit at 4-5 level or redoubles as SOS.The psyche will be effective especially if his P is a passed hand. Can this be a real danger? Is it possible to guard against this possibility? -

I am not smoking anything, noxious or otherwise;just trying to learn although perhaps I was too flippant. My point is if double is the "only bid" then how can we say that it can "easily be wrong?'Does it not imply that many other bids are worth considering? I also would like to know why double is not penalty unless ofcourse that happens to be your understanding with your favourite P.What does one do with ♠Axx ♥Q J 10 9 ♦Axx ♣ xxx?(only 11 points ) Lastly P knows nothing about my hand except that I probably have 13 points 2 defensive tricks and 3♦ or more. Why not tell him about my best suit?It is my best suit after all. With a far better ♦suit I would consider 6. I know so many experts cannot be wrong yet.... -

No other call is close and yet could be easily wrong? Seems to be an oxymoron. ;) .What is wrong with 5♦ with dbl signifying penalty and no desire to compete (if you are not ambitious)?and 5♥ if you are ambitious? -

That is funny, since your name is on the list (last name). I suspect this means an illegal name still exist in the list somewhere. I believe if the list has an illegal name (too long I think), it doesn't work and nobody can sign up, or at least nobody listed after that name. Jilly can you check the list twice to find out who is naughty? Once zasanya can register then the list must be ok... this is a good test case. 8 persons have already registered -

http://redwing.hutman.net/%7Emreed/warriorshtm/troller.htm Jlall's bridge comments have always been impressive. This last one perhaps nonbridge in nature is by far the most impressive.Terrific.Does it remind anyone of Victor Mollo? -

I tried to register several times. The message I get is “ Sorry, this is a private tournament. It is not open to the public. Please contact the tourney host for details.” I contacted the host. She replied that I should be able to register.I can't Can someone help? -
I advise all my novice and beginner friends not to worry about vulnerabiluty or even scoring but just concentrate on biddding and play.Very soon they themselves get familiar with the implications of vulnerabilty and become cautious about giving penalties. In fact many of them become so cautious about bidding when red that they disregard my advise about bidddding borderline vulnerable games but merrily bid very thin non vul games.

May all your suits always break. May all your finesses always work. May all your menaces be always rightly placed. In other words MERRY XMAS and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

Why not 3♦ instead of 2♦?Does 1NT automatically score more at mps than 2♦?

A BBO-standard Precision style?
zasanya replied to helene_t's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Probably best so. - Those who already knows Precision have no interest in a hybrid. - Those who play homecooking will not study and will not apply. - Those who learn Precision in BIL learn a different and full version. So in fact it is difficult to see the stakeholders here. I am a diehard precision fan and in the company in which I play a precision ♣ does not have to be alerted but a natural ♣ needs to be alerted. So the moment someone suggests playing precision without asking bids I get put off.Its like having a gun and no bullets. -
100-200? More like 20-25?

I have the highest repect for the 3 posters who have responded .Yet I do not understand how the thought of ducking ♦ can even be mentioned.
-
Playing precision responder already knows that opener cannot have 16 points.Since you have not jumped he also knows that you are probably not in 14-15 range. Moreover if playing 13-15 NT responder also knows after 2♦ that you have an unbalanced hand. These inferences are not available playing 2/1. (a) 3♥ looking for 3 NT. (b ) pass (c ) 4♣ should mean most /all points in minors so no desire to play NT.but interested in ♦ game/slam 5♦ should mean no desire for a slam but he could very well bid 4♣ to keep bidding space for responder even with a weak hand.

I am presuming that Players in this case are not regular Partners. A few questions Phil. Why not bid 2♥ with your hand instead of 2♣?OrDoes 5♥ show 5cards of ♥ in your system??What do you do with 3-3-3-4 shape, 10 points, 4 rags of ♣? or even 3-3-4-3? surely to the less sophisticted P the 2♣ bid DENIES 4 card major instead of showing both? Then is an unsophisticated P to be blamed for biddding 2NT with a flat hand and 12-14?I entirely agree that his hand does not warrent a double but pick up partners are never reliable and in such situations is it not better to KISS? The story seems to have had an happy ending any way :D
-
Opening hand B) ♣ stopper, no 5 carder,probable shape 4-3-3-3,point range 12-14.
-
Couldnt those points and 2♠ cards be in E hand instead of N hand?Would 1NT overcall be a success then? Can we make generalisations on the basis of a 1st hand psyche?
-
I have taken some pains to fill up 3 different FD cards .I find it very helpful and so far all my opponents have found them satisfactory.I must add that I very rarely play timed tourneys .Most of the time I play team matches set up by myself. Our alertable calls are always alerted and I believe one is obliged to do so even when using FD; so in a tourney if a call is not alerted TD should be informed.

You should open the bidding if...
zasanya replied to EricK's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My Guru explained it this way about 25 years (may be more :-)) ago. There are 40 points in the pack using the Milton Point count. The number of tricks is 13.So average is 10 points per hand and 3 points per trick. The opener should be 1 trick more than average .Hence 10+3 is a sound opening.Over the years people refined the Milton Point, enhanced the value of Aces and kings and long suits and started opening on lighter hands. The main advantage of precision in my opinion is the various gadgets available after the 1♣ opening which leads to better slam contractsIt is the 16+ hands which are difficult to describe in natural methods.Precision makes it easy if there is no interference.Alas these days thats a big if.
