1)Find a person with whom you are comfortable even when you are not playing or discussing bridge. 2)You must have reasonable faith in her card play although you know she may not be an expert. 3)Both of you should be prepared to work hard on whatever bidding system you are employing. 4)During serious play Do not discuss or even indicate that she might have made a mistake. 5)Make a note of all the things that could have ben improved on.I usually insist on writing the score on our private score card where I can mark the deals which need discussion. 6)During play there will be moments when Partner will be depressed.Be ready with a comment which shows you sympathize and which will lighten her mood. 6)Discuss all the relevant deals after the session.Start with whatever mistakes you might have made and then ask her whether she would like to discuss her mistakes. All the time it should be clear to both that the idea is to improve the Partnership performance and not finding faults.

I am one of the mugs who voted for 3♣.I am curious to know how declarer non vul lost 1100.Would it be possible to see the full board?

Why not bid 4!s?
-
If you want toplay precision the first requirement is a P who is willing to play it and is willing to work with you and who doesnt mind bidding mishaps in the early days. If you can find such a P then you may try Sontag's Power Precision or the more recent Viking Precision. Here is a useful link to Viking Precision. http://www.vikingclub.starwarsguiden.net/index.php

All tables play the boards in increasing number, going to series 1 after the highest numbered series. Your assumptions regardig board movement is correct. The best is to make a table with information on NS and EW pair to play and which boards is to be played for each consecutive round for each table. Put in information for the pairs about movement after the round (NS move to table x as NS/EW, EW move to table y as NS/EW). Boards moves to table z. Thank you sir
-
Thank you sir but May I have a little more clarification regarding board movement? Take 14 table movement. In the 1st round on table 5 Pair No 26 sits N/S and pair no 3 sits E/W play deal no 6 and also deal board 7 8 9 10 but dont play them.In the next round what happens to the boards?AmI right in assuming that board 6 moves to table 4; board 7 is kept on table 5;and board 11 joins 8,9,10 as boards not to be played in 2nd round?

I play acol with a regular P ,precision with another regular P and sayc/2/1 with a large majority of BBO players.Nearly always the contracts reached by employing any of these systems are same. Many times NT contracts are played by different P though. One of the great advantages of acol never to have been mentioned is when 1player opens acol minor but Ops buy the contract. The 1m openers P has an easy choice of leads as he knows his Ps 4 card or longer suit.

Frances I need a full movement for 26-30 pairs. To get over the time constraint we thought we could have 1 board per round. The software we have generates charts for 15 table Howell but maximum limit for number of rounds is 13. David's solution seems workable. So we will try that if the director agrees.Otherwise we will make do with a scrambled Mitchell with arrowhead switch. I sincerely thank all for their replies.

26-30 pairs it is.How does one decide a single winner?
-
I have to organize an all play all pairs tournament for 26-30 players Are charts for Hovel movements of boards and players available on line for 13,14,15 tables? If yes would be most grateful if a link is provided. If anyone has them would be most grateful if I get them by email.

Both the clocks should be stopped while information regarding alertable calls is being supplied or is sought.

I have seen this suggestion before and while it bears thinking about, it does have some problems. How are you going to divide the time - per board, per round? What happens if the defence/declarer has a real problem on the last hand of a round and needs time to think? What penalties will be levied. All in all, I think it is too problematical to consider. In chess if a player oversteps the time limit she loses that game whatever the position on the board. In scrabble a player loses 10 points for every 1 minute above the prescribed time limit. Lets consider an 8 board team match.Should be over in an hour.Lets say 64 minutes. Each player will have a chess clock and will be given 16 minutes.Suppose N is the dealer. Her clock is started. When the bid is made she stops her clock and starts East's clock .After E makes her bid she stops her clock and starts South's clock and soon .After the bidding is over the opening leaders clock is started. She plays a card; stops her own clock and starts declarer's and so on. A penalty of 2 imps for every extra minute. It will be best if all cards are played out and no claims or concessions can be made.

I have made this suggestion before and I will make it once more. The authorities should seriously think of introducing timing devices at least for important events.Chess players use them, scrabble players use them ;why not Bridge players?

You might like to try Truscott overcalls i e 1♦ on 1♣ showing ♦ and ♥; 1♥ showing ♥ and ♠ etc .The non touching suits are shown by dbl and NT.Single suiters by a jump.

Thank you all for the replies. To clarify certain points raised by some of the posters. Blackshoe, the contract made with two overtricks.North south had 29 points and 4-4 ♥ fit.11 tricks were makable in 4 ♥ and 3 nt.3nt making 11 was already above average for declarer as some pairs played in 4♥ and 2 actually went dn in 6♥. jtfanclub,as you have rightly pointed out responders method of impossible negative is different than the traditional method. This happens to be a home grown variety used by some in our club.Opener and responder had agreed to play 'impossible negative"Their definitions however differed. skaeran, unfortunately i interpreted the double as irrational, wild and gambling.I have now an uncomfortable feeling that I may be biased.I know the 4 players well and the doubler has often in the past made bids which his admirers called bold and imaginative and I dubbed IWoG.I must keep a more open mind in future. Fortunately, even after an adjustment and a procedural penalty the results would not change.

I was officiating in a pairs tournament because the regular TDs were not available that day.I was also playing in this tournament. On 1 table the dealer opened 1♣precision and the uncontested auction went 1♦-1NT-3♣.At this point dealers rho asked the meaning of the auction till then and it was explained to him that 1♣ was 16+;1NT was 16-18 and the dealer explained his Partners 1♦ and 3♣ as showing less than 8 points and 6 card ♣ suit .Now opener who had ♣Q 10 x bid 3NT and openers RHO doubled and openers P redoubled! The opening lead was a ♠ and dummy came down with 11 points and 2 rags of ♣.At this point the doubler called me and asked me to allow him to retract the double as the double was based on wrong info provided.Responder's contention was that he and his P were playing for the first time and a ♣ had got mixed with his ♠ and he thought that he had a 4-4-4-1 hand and he meant to show 8+ hand with ♣ singleton and realized his mistake only when he put down the dummy.I had played that hand earlier and knew that the doubler had only 2 Js and asked him why he doubled to which his reply was that he thought his 5 card ♣ J would stop the run of the presumed ♣ and the declarer may have a combied asset of only 23 points and cards in other suits would be badly placed for declarer and contract was likely to go down. I gave the decision that the result stands 3NTxx and asked them to play and warned the declarer that there could be a procedural penalty against them. Should the TD adjust the contract to 3NT?

1♠-2♥-2♠ (shows 6 cards)-3♠-4♣-4♥-5♣ OR 5♦and so on to slam?
-
I play it as 16+.I have experimented with fit jumps ,mini splinters, weak jump shift. In my opinion minor suits hands with 16 + hcp are best described by jump shift .All other hand types can be described in different way but 16 + minor suit hand is very difficult to describe without jump shift.

Responder can bid 2♣ then 3♦ and finally 4♠?Shows his values and shape and lets opener decide?Isnt J2NT primarily meant for balanced game force with 4 card trump support? So that GF without J2NT denies that hand pattern and wouldnt that be important info for opener? IMO The fact that the dog did not bark is as important as the fact that the dog did bark.

Ty all Fortunately oneo f my partners had copied the file so I recovered it.I am a little surprised that the file cannot be recovered from bbo server although i have used it several times while playing.

I would love to play.My time zone is GMT + 5.30.I can misplay most systems . Suggest 'keylime express' as name of the team.

I was a very keen chess player when I was a teenager (30-40 years ago).I used to borrow chess books from the local library. One day picked up a book by Gerald Abrahams a chessmaster without looking at the contents.Turned out to be a bridge book (Brains in Bridge if I remember right). Was surprised that books are written about'mere card games' but got interested enough to learn the rules. Still learning.

BBO Internet Teams League
zasanya replied to wojela's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Would some of the regular posters on the forum like to field a team? I am available.
