  1. I'd agree with using Jack for bidding practice. You could even learn 2/1 with it but alongside a 2/1 book. Although Hardy and Lawrence are the recognised authorities, I'd suggest Paul Thurston's "25 Steps to Learning 2/1" . It is a very good book if you are new to the system.
  2. Great to see the Camrose impasse has been resolved :)
  3. Excellent idea and good luck with the implementation Fred :) When I've been preparing the lin files for Nikos' site I've often thought it would be a good idea to have a Readme file with a description of the teams' methods - the World Chamionship books of the 60's and 70's are very good at giving the methods e.g the 1969 book gives 8 pages on the differences in the Italian systems - and that's in addition to descriptions of the systems used by all pairs of the five competing teams! However I never seemed to get round to it so Claus's idea of using FD would be an added bonus for these great matches of the past. Denis
  4. Hope this goes ahead - If you like I could supply a .dup file (of selected hands, maybe) from a Bermuda Bowl final or major event that has a Vugraph record. Might be interesting to compare results ;)
  5. I made a Vugraph of the first Swat the Moscito match on BBO - held in mid 2003. Players included Paul Marston, Sartaj Hans, Fred, Luis Argerich and Inquiry. Match has added commentary provided by some of the players after the match. Email me and I'll send you the file. Denis
  6. I hear we will probably miss vugraph coverage of an important UK event because of exorbitant internet charges by the hotel. They want about £2000 for a weekend. Anyone know what sort of costs are the norm for a few days internet coverage on BBO?
  7. OK now  I found the solution - in case anyone else needs to know - just use @S to get the spade symbol.
  8. I am using the nt| command to insert some text in a .lin file. I want to show suit symbols in the text - so that suits show nicely when the file is opened with NetBridgeVu.exe . Anyone know how to do this - I have tries S! (for spades) but that hasn't worked. Help appreciated please.
  9. I've emailed Nikos - I'm sure he will sort it out quickly
  10. I like all the improvements to GIB DD solver in V460 - plenty of choice and it now works for .lin files as well - great feature :) However I have one small problem and that is the colour scheme, especially when using the simple DF replacement. My brain is finding it difficult to adjust to Green meaning a bad card for a defender ie contract will make - I found the old DF display more logical ie RED was always bad , GREEN was always good for either declarer or defenders. Anyone else find this a problem? Maybe it would be possible to have a choice - possibly in the gear wheel - if you wanted the original DF colour scheme?
  11. That would be a nice option B) Most of the time, especially watching live Vugraph, I like the simplicity of the DF type analysis but it would be useful to be able to get GIB's extra info when looking at Vugraph recordings.
  12. Apologies for posting this twice but this is probably a better place I like it - great feature! However it only seems to work with live bridge. When I try to use it on a lin file in the Bridge archive it doesn't work. The GIB button has disappeared and been replaced by the DF button which unfortunately doesn't work anymore Denis
  13. I agree - great feature! However it only seems to work with live bridge. When I try to use it on a lin file in the Bridge archive it doesn't work. The GIB button has disappeared and been replaced by the DF button which unfortunately doesn't work anymore :( Denis
  14. This looks a really interesting feature. However when I tried it (8 boards), I only get the play to the first trick in the PBN file. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
  15. I'd be interested in how easy it is to set up your own bidding system, if you've bought the software. My impression, although I could well be wrong, was that it was more like adding gadgets etc to one of the supplied systems. OTOH, Oxford Bridge(in your list above) lets you build your own system from scratch. I have that program but it is a huge task to build your own system. I started building a Precision system for practising but abandoned it when Bridge Baron added a Precision version
  16. Congratulations to all involved in giving us superb Vugraph coverage of the Camrose Trophy. Four table coverage of every session ;) - and also using BBO for the onsite Vugraph. If a small Association like the CBAI (Contract Bridge Association of Ireland) can provide a show like this, you'd think it would be easy for ACBL and WBF with all their resources to do likewise. Also a great website for the event with lots of pictures :) http://www.norb.info/camrose.htm Denis
  17. Despite all the connection problems with the broadcast, four decent Vugraph files (two 8-bd stanzas per file) are now available - see: http://www.sarantakos.com/bridge/vugraph/2005/2005-gcup.html
  18. Just wondering what might be the advantage of tfif format ? I've just used the batch converter utility in Paint Shop Pro to convert 10 jpeg scans and the output tifs are slightly larger, even though I used something called LZW compression, whatever that might be.
  19. What a shame for our premier teams of four event - that seems very parochial of the Scots - I thought it was supposed to be run by BridgeGreatBritain !
  20. Will the semi finals of the Gold Cup be shown on BBO . Only the quarter final and the Final appears on the Vugraph schedule?
  21. The contested auction section in this might be of interest. It was developed some years ago for the English under-20 International squad. Not sure what you do when you've reached 20 :P http://tinyurl.com/bg8zo Denis
  22. Unfortunately, afaik, GIB development stopped about two years ago. If you buy GIB now you are buying state of the art from two years ago and other programs have moved on a lot in that period.
  23. Rrather than fiddling around with files, I was hoping that the software could be improved. I think its been on the "to do" list for some time but not high priority. However it would be nice if something could be done for the next Cavendish :P
  24. Seems to me that the 1995 Final would be a good one to try first. It should prove very popular with Fred in it and the match was in doubt until late in the final segment. The US team was essentialy the same (Soloway replacing Woolf) that won in 2003 and lost in 2005 and for Canada we have some very well known BBO cooomentators in Eric Kokish and Joey Silver + Fred :P We need volunteers to produce the .dup files -pbn would do also as they can be converted - but we also need people who have the book and are willing to scan - hope copyright doesn't rear its ugly head. Nikos's copy is child marked but I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy at scanning all 160 deals of the final. Depending on required timescale I'll volunteer to do 2 or 3 segments if someone will email me the deals. Denis
  25. I watched some of the Reisinger Final yesterday. Player names were changing during the event - every three boards I think - yet on the .lin file I've saved to hard disk there is only one set of players for all 27 boards. Can this be improved for future events of this type? - we also get this problem with pairs events eg the Cavendish. Denis
