One thing to point out is that a computer or an iPad are not e-readers. I never enjoyed reading electronic documents until I got my first electronic ink-based device. So, don't knock off e-books until you've tried an appropriate device. Another thing in favor of e-books is you can't wear them out. I had to buy a new paper copy of Catch-22 after pages started dropping out of my first copy - and I never did anything obscene like leave the book open face down.

That's true, but note that 2♥ is not the weak response here. Everything else is right - if doubler has no support for an unbid suit and not enough strength for double-then-bid, then they should pass. So, 2♠ can't show lack of support for hearts and a hand that's not very strong.

But it was in 2014 :(

Yeah, GIB isn't generous about giving ruffs, but if you look at four hands you often find a ruff would just give you a warm fuzzy and not increase the number of tricks on defense.

Playing on an iPad in portrait orientation, the explanation for unusual NT (the auction was 1♣-(2NT)) gets cut off. -

Just noticed something else: when reviewing hands, there's this golden glow to show who was on opening lead. I think it's a confusing cue - might be better to just highlight the card led, which gives more information and would probably be easier to parse. -

Thanks. I managed to figure out the bidding one, but not the "last trick". -

I've given it a couple of days, and I have to join the disliking crowd. I also play on an iPad and preferred the old layout. Some concrete points: - Graying out the dummy isn't needed. I can remember that the exposed hand that isn't on the bottom is dummy, and if I'm dummy I don't need to know who's dummy since I'm not playing. That visual cue doesn't add much. - Requiring more clicks to review the last card played is a step back. I use it frequently. - The choices for buttons on top are a bit strange. "Back" and "Options" are two things you want accessible a lot less than the options hiding under "more" (in anonymous play, undo and redeal are common) - There's a delay after each hand is complete (when displaying the result) which can't be clicked through and didn't use to be there. Superimposing the result of last hand while the next hand has already been dealt was a better approach, IMO. - Two days in, I'm still not used to the representation of tricks taken with the horizontal and vertical boxes near the contract. - The GIB bid descriptions, when holding down the bid, appear pretty far away from where you'd naturally look. Sorry for the long list of complaints. I tried giving it a chance because GUI changes always take some getting used to. -
Interesting, GIB posted the same thread with the same hand, with your name instead of his.

I normally get headaches after extended periods of strenuous mental activity. How long is "extended" and how hard is "strenuous" seems to depend on my overall level of fitness and sleep deprivation. That's been the case since before I drank coffee.

The way it works is that each club evening is a "round" in a monthly competition. So if you play Wed night, your results from all Wed nights this month are aggregated, and the top pair receives a trophy (or next week's entry fee).
-
My club gives an option of a plastic trophy or free entry to the next game. People typically choose a single trophy for each type of club night, then switch over to the free game.

hummingway, could you be having this issue? http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/64573-android-4-reconnect-hang/

GIB isn't a great bidding teacher. You can consider the fact that if responder bids NT after a minor-suit opening, it means he has no four-card major to bid. That leaves him with at least seven minor-suit cards, so he must have a four-card minor, so you must have a minor-suit fit. That being said, it's much harder to take 11 tricks than 9, so 3NT still seems like a good bid, to me, unless you have methods to tell whether you belong in 5m or 3NT, and you don't with GIB. If GIB doesn't have a heart stopper you will lose at least two heart tricks in either contract, and for 5m it would be harder to recover since you'd have to win all the rest.

(Spades were 4-4, I frequently screw around with GIB on the iPad)

Sorry, just happened to me again on the iPad. This time GIB W didn't crash. [hv=pc=n&w=s432ht54daq96ckj6&e=sjthakqdk73cqt972&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=1n2d(Majors)3n(%22Lebensohl%22)p4c(%22new%20suit%22)ppp]266|200[/hv]

Risk Taking and Gender: The Case of Bridge
Antrax replied to tenoblak's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hey, You have some minor English errors (raw instead of row, "full game" is in Hebrew but they just call it "game" in English, etc). More importantly, when you select boards at random or rounds at random, you're opening yourself to accusations of cherry picking. Why not perform a full analysis of the results? Finally, why not try and correlate the level of the player (roughly correlated to their number of matchpoints, perhaps weighed by length of membership) to eliminate that factor? -
You mean W shouldn't pass in his second turn, right?
-
I'm with onoway, and another thing: right now marking someone as an enemy is the only way to mute people. I frequently enemy people who talk too much in kib chat or vugraph, and that shouldn't be an indication to anything beyond my feeling they're too chatty.

It's good GIB strategy to hog hands, I also play 14-17 NT with it.
-
It's a good question why 1♠ is forcing by a passed hand, here.
