After GIB opens 2♣, NT overcalls in direct seat have no bid definitions. I've played with it a bit and it looks like you can shut it down by doing something like bidding 3NT on air when favorable. It's a gamble but it's too risk-free currently because I've yet to get GIB to X me here. Either it goes AP for a good board usually or they bid over it more or less normally.

why do people never encourage on BBO?
Antrax replied to whereagles's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
No, he's surprised you pay attention at the table and think one trick ahead. Maybe still unfortunate, but not as dire as you paint it. Lazy players would just think "well, his Q will hold the trick" and play low. -
Yeah, no real mystery. The lead marks you with the K and opening 1NT marks it as protected, so ducking means if it goes down it goes down the maximum amount.

Do you really bid 5♥ here with South's hand over 5♦?

Please Settle An Argument
Antrax replied to Trump Echo's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
You'll note the mistake is your partner's. He should've played low to trick 1, thus eventually scoring the trump Q. -
Which is why I put equals in quotation marks. Sometimes GIB decides two cards are equal because it has an inference from the auction, but in reality the human psyched so the inference is wrong. I think those are most of the "GIB plays like a beginner" complaints.GIB's documentation does say it shows attitude on an honor lead in the first trick. Don't know if that checks out.

Great defense by Graves in Spingold

If declarer has ♣Kxx, would they have necessarily won the first trick with the K? -
Just cash aces until GIB encourages, then lead a club if it doesn't :)
-
♦K6, since at that point it knows both are winners.
-
Not to rub salt in the wound, but GIB's ♦K play IMO shows why making it always follow with lowest of "equals" would worsen its play.

You can show a game-forcing hand with 3 card support at the 3-level or the 4-level. Offhand, which would you think is better?

Many ways to play and defend this hand
Antrax replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
You can use the "play" button in conjunction with the "GIB" button to get an answer. I think it's cool if E plays his ♥9 on the first trick declarer can prevail. -
Treat her 2♥ calls as natural. If she meant it as a transfer, say you forgot the system.
-
Well played, but you're not playing against a human. GIB would never think "I can't lead a diamond or S will infer something from west's non-ruff", since GIB thinks all four of you can see all hands, it's just the way it's programmed. I'm not sure why GIB E didn't give W a ruff, though.

A Defensive Problem
Antrax replied to lamford's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I really really don't follow, maybe seeing all hands biases me. You want to duck a diamond as a safety play, since you really only need three diamond tricks. If N has another heart to lead, S has a four-card suit and declarer loses three hearts and one diamond and makes. If N has no hearts to lead, then S has no entry, since declarer is looking at stoppers in both black suits, so declarer makes 4 diamonds even on a 4-0 break. So, why is ducking a diamond to north anything but a good play? It loses an overtrick when north has Qx, but isn't that normal at IMPs to prevent going off on the actual deal? -
Here we have up to two seconds (depends on the intersection) where it's red for everyone, so you get the best of both worlds :P

It's heartening to see other people also waste brain power on these situations. Regarding others not considering the result of their courtesy, one time on the way to work the guy in front of me stop to let a bus merge. The bus, being huge, merges awfully and blocks traffic for a short while before we can all resume. I'm sitting in my car fuming when the guy in front of me pulls up and parks right next to where I work, so I park next to him and ask him "hey, did you know you had right of way back there?" (this was before people started getting stabbed for less). So he says "yeah, I did, but there are more people on the bus than were in our lane, and I figured he rates to be a professional driver so he won't merge so poorly". I guess the lesson is people aren't always deaf and blind to their environment, some of them just might have different ideas.

A Defensive Problem
Antrax replied to lamford's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Since this isn't the expert forum, I'll bite: why is ducking the ♦Q insulting? -
Here it's considered legitimate to block the road while waiting for someone to evacuate a parking spot. I'm surprised Madrid has such great parking that similar ethics hadn't evolved.
-
I concur. And opposite that, holding GIB W's hand, do you bid 4♦ or pass at all vul?
-
iandayre, so what should double here be? Try to answer in GIB's terms, so "DSIP" doesn't fit.
-
Winstonm, what about my example? There are 5 drivers waiting to enter a roundabout on your right. There are infinity drivers behind you, meaning they keep coming. Your lane has right of way. Do you drive on? If the driver ahead of you lets someone from the lane on the right merge, do you resent that?
-
Traffic laws include "starvation" situations, meaning if everyone were to drive like a robot a set of drivers could take an hour to get past a single roundabout on certain hours. It's the city's fault for poor design, but I don't want to punish innocent drivers for that, so I often let people merge ahead of me even when I have right of wait in places where the alternative would be for them to way excessively long. I never realized it pisses anyone off.

Found some threads discussing this: http://www2.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/65348-gib-raise-to-slam-unreasonably/ http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/53077-cant-play-game%3B-only-slam-or-partial/

You're right, and there are several threads about not being able to play 5m, only 4 or 6.
