Both splinter and Jacoby are wrong. 2S will be a good descriptive start. If pd is strong in H, you can easily reach 6/7 anyway, however, when he has sth like Jx Axxxx AKQx Kx you need to bid source of tricks.

I'm either bidding 4H directly, or cuebiding 3S to show some raise, and ready to compete to 5H unless pd X LHO's 4S.

As cards lie, even if RHO doesn't cash out spades, you play 3 rounds of diamonds and it's pain in the a** for the poor guy to find a discard.

Provided RHO has club guarded, I would try diamonds first, if LHO has the length, there is an auto dbl-squeeze. If RHO guards diamonds, provided he has spades and the club length, the heart finesse is likely on.

The reason to rebid 2D is if pd is short in hearts, you won't be comfortable. If pd has dblton he would convert back to 2H.

Being a fan of Fred it's a joy to hear Fred also chooses to open 1H. However, I'm one of the 2D rebid voters......:( I saw Garozzo, once in a bidding match, rebidding 2 minor with similar hand(stronger in point count, but also with weak 6 card major), after pd "converting to 2H" with dblton, now the suit gets promoted, and Garozzo duly invited and was accepted to get a full 10. The other expert simply rebid 2H, all pass.

The more I thought about it, the more I felt it's logical to play 2S as natural and dbl as penalty showing real suit, and 3H should be a real power suit instead of a cuebid. It's too frequently nowadays to psych against big club, especially when the color is favorite. With minimum big club strength, you simply pass since you are in force.

4H is a good bid but 5C simply doesn't do the job(forced). West needs to jump to 6C to show extra length and source of tricks, with some goody intermediates. After that, East has a simple raise.

-200 will still get us low avg, because the field is weak. In a good field, I assume it will be close to zero. It reminds me the board Cohen lost in 98 World Open Pairs, which cost the title. You've already seen a top, but it simply cannot be reached.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've checked the field, though admittedly not too strong. -200 gets us about 30%, and +100 will be 70% of the matchpoint. But still, this is matchpoint, when you see a chance of sure 300 you hate to settle down for 100. If pd dbl, you have another decision to make, whether sitting for 300 to 500, or go for 600(my choice since it's red).
