  1. Even Larry Cohen mentioned that if Precision was more mainstream he'd teach it to beginners because it's much simpler... Disclaimer: I do not play Precision but Polish, but in any case (for once) I agree with him :-)
  2. If maximal doubles were on then X would be penalty and 3♥ a general game try, but I find it hard to believe I have a penalty X of 3♦ after my T/O X so I'd play X as GT, 3♥ as natural strong NF (if in a misfit...) and 3♠ as competitive (that one doesn't change). If I have a super-strong NT then I give up on the penalty and bid 3N.
  3. I shamelessly copied examples 1-5 from Deal (as well as defvector, losers, etc.) in today's version. There is no smartstack dealing yet (it is in my todo list), so redeal is much slower than deal on rare hands. I haven't added statistics tests yet either.
  4. Thomas Andrews' Deal is, in my opinion, an excellent program, except for one thing: using Tcl as a programming language. So I tried to replace Tcl by Python, and here is the result: redeal. Please give it a try! Feedback / bug reports are welcome. (PS: the code is still way in alpha stage.)
  5. Assuming a strict 15-17 opening (and all 5cM hands as well), my DD sim over 1k deals says that Staymaning is better than passing by ~0.2 imp per board even if accepting all 16 counts, if you only accept on 17 counts then you are ~0.4 imp better. If 1N covers all 14s instead, Staymaning costs you ~0.6 imp per board (the difference between accepting and rejecting with 16s is less than 0.1 imp). So I guess this really depends on how many 14s you put in your NT opener (as well as how many 3532/2533s, which probably contribute a lot to making 4♥s). On the other hand this was done with a new DD simulator that I've just written so I feel like I need someone else to confirm these numbers.
  6. My 2 eurocents with the French (FFB) regulations (which are also the ones I was taught :-)): Before making a skip bid (including an opening bid), the player must put the Stop card face up on the table. After a skip bid has been made, LHO must pause for 5 to 10 seconds, regardless of whether the Stop card has been used and regardless of whether it has been withdrawn. Not using a Stop card may result in loss of rights for a player whose LHO did not pause after a skip bid. Stop is not a call. Using a Stop card out of turn, or passing or making any non-skip call after using a Stop card, does not constitute a call out of rotation, or a change of call. However, such actions can transmit UI and Law 16 may apply.

  8. It can simply go 1♣-1♦ 1M-1N(5-7) 2M(18-20)-3/4M which is hardly worse than the standard or Precision auctions.
  9. In my own (limited) experience, 1C-1D-1M as 3crd 12-14 is extremely rare, as usually opponents will already have entered the auction by then. However, this may be due to the fact that I'm usually playing in a field that has little to no experience defending against WJ.
  10. Anyone on for tonight (around 9pm PST)?
  11. I'll try to be online tonight (antonylee-Grommet1). We play something that vaguely looks like a Polish club.
  12. The official booklet (2006 version of the SEF) that I have says, 1. After a 1/1... 1.3 Notrump rebid... 1NT: 12-14H 1.4 Rebidding the opened suit... Rebid without a jump: 13-17HL. Promises 6 cards only if responder's suit was the step immediately above opener's.
  13. Hi, any chance you could provide a .pyc version? Not everybody runs on windows :-) Of course I would be very excited it it was open-sourced but I perfectly understand if you don't want to.
  14. My own experience of switching from SEF to 2/1 (I didn't really go through the SAYC phase, I tend to think that SAYC is more like 2/1 except when suit rebid... ok not really either but well): * 1m-1M-2M never a 3crd raise, rebid a bad 4crd minor is not frowned upon. Also, always open 1C, not 1D, with 5C4D and less than reverse strength. * NMF (pleeease play CS) vs Roudi: 1m-1M-1N-2C!, now 2D=3crd, min, 2H=4crd, min, 2S=4crd, max, 2N=3crd, min (a rarer style is to play 2C!=relay to 2D! followed by natural invite... one half of 2way NMF :-)) * Benjamin 2C/2D (2C forces 2D, now opener's rebid is strong but NF, 2D opening is GF with responses: 2H=negative, 2S=major ace, 3m=ace, 2N=8+ or 2Ks, 3H/S/N=2A, crash style... widely agreed to be a weak point of SEF) * No Puppet Stayman (there was a recent article in the FFB magazine strongly advising new partnerships against it) * 1N with 5cM is still frowned upon, but things start to change apparently (otherwise, rebid a 3crd minor) * 2M default rebid in 2/1 auctions * 1D-2C-2N is played as 12-14 OR 18-19 at least in some partnerships (though 2D=any min also exists) * 4SF is autoforcing (i.e. responder must rebid) and GF only if responder's rebid is at the 3-level, passable otherwise. * 3rd suit forcing (1C-1M-2C-2D! and (for some partnerships) 1D-1S-2D-2H!=artificial force, 9+ F1 only). * Standard attitude and count (known as "odd/even" in French, beware!) for everyone (I've seen some play UD attitude but I don't remember ever seeing UD count), some play odd/even (known as "Italian" in French...) and lavinthal, K is power lead against NT, otherwise top of sequence. Length leads against suits: lowest from odd, 2nd non-honor from even (i.e. 2nd from even w/o honor, 3rd from even with 1 honor). Length leads against NT: 4th best, top of nothing, 2nd from 4/5 small (or 4th from 5) * Rubensohl is, I believe, much more frequently played than Lebensohl, but neither is officially "standard" I think.
  15. I just noticed that actually you can also include 2 hand types in 3♥ (e.g. hearts, min and hearts, max), as long as 3♠ can be used as a NF ask over the two meanings. So a scheme such as 2♠-2N!... 3♣: ♣ or non-solid max (3♦: ask => 3♥, 3♠=♣ min, max; 3N=non-solid max; 3♥: ask "please bid 3N only with ♣ max and signoff otherwise") 3♦, ♥: nat (next step=strength ask) 3♠: min no feature 3N: solid allows to show both a side feature (or shortness, it doesn't matter) and strength, always below 3NT in the necessary cases.
  16. 1. pass 2. same as the_clown 3. 2.5♠ depending on the phase of the moon... probably 2♠ 4. 3♠, 4♣ is forcing (don't try to get out of a misfit at the 4-level) and I'll probably bid 4♦ over that, there's little risk of going overboard.
  17. When I was still in France it would have gone 2N-4♣ (xf (nobody plays Gerber)) (not saying that I'm handling hands with both minors very well, though) 4♦-4♠ (cue) 4N (KC)-6♦ (1, 1 useful void) 6♠ (GST)-7♦
  18. Rubensohl really needs T/O X, or at least semi-T/O (playable in multiple strains even though not shapely). If you worry about missing 800s don't forget opener can T/O as well (http://sites.google.com/site/psmartinsite/Home/bridge-articles/countering-notrump-interference). As for whether to play that over 2♣ specifically, that's another question.
  19. I guess this depends on your actual response structure over 2♣ but I favour transfer positives, not so much for right-siding as for the space it gains.
  20. Board 1 is too hard for me (though I will notice that the probability that both pointed suits behave is "only" 65% -- yes I know it's more than enough :P). Board 2 I guess it's a matter of partnership agreement, for me 3♣ not only promises a distributional hand but also a very weak hand so as East I may give up over 3♣ (he's the one who knows (first) you're in a big misfit).
