[hv=pc=n&s=sqjt9ha93daq84c75&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=p1hpp1sp]133|200[/hv] IMP pairs. We're playing an 11.5-14 NT and Fantunes (meaning with an unbalanced hand, 10+ points and 5+ spades, P would have opened the bidding), so the best you can hope for opposite is a moderate balanced 11 count or a distributional 9-count. Do you act now? Do you agree with the initial pass? Would 2♠ just be competing here?

The full hand: [hv=pc=n&s=sj86hqj9d9652cq97&w=st9ht854d87cjt543&n=sq52h73dat43cak86&e=sak743hak62dkqjc2&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=pp1nd2c(No%20natural%20pass)p2dppp]399|300[/hv] Bidding 2♥ will land you in a dodgy game that makes on the actual distribution (I think it needs a 3-3 spade split to avoid you getting forced in clubs). Doubling will pick up 500. At the table West passed, and the opps bid the game, so we lost 9 IMPs.

 at the people claiming it's unplayable. Imagine P had doubled for penalties (also 'unplayable'?). Would you have passed? Then double now. Or would you have bid? Then make that bid now (or pass).

ATB - not the greatest of contracts

Do people have a view on whether East's 3♠ (or rather, West's double, if not passed) would be gameforcing? -
Yeah, just sanity checking this one. Our team mates complained at us for 'losing the part score battle' when 3♥ and 3♠ both made.
-
X of 2♣ would be normal takeout for us, given that it's a likely place for them to play (but the honours still rate to be to our left).

P's double was optional. Yours, under the presumptive values (even in diamonds) is just takeout. In this case it means 'P will pass with an arbitrarily strong hand if he didn't have a more suitable call available'.
-
North is a substantial favourite to hold more diamond honours than S on this sequence, so there's not that much value in a penalty X. In any case, if you want to penalise, you X, and P will pass unless he has (approx) the sort of hand that would have pulled an outright penalty X had you somehow been acting first.

Which opening (or pass)
Jinksy replied to apollo1201's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If I were to open this, I'd bid 5♣ over partner's rebid, not 4. What on earth would make me want to encourage slam? -
[hv=pc=n&w=st9ht854d87cjt543&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=pp1n(12-14)d2c(Both%20minors)p2dp(Forcing)p]133|200[/hv] IMP teams. Systemic agreements are to not let them play in 2m undoubled. Partner's X of 2♦ would have been optional - neither pure penalties nor pure takeout (so his pass is consistent with either of the latter)
-
I would bid on if LHO were playing it (planning to Lightner X 6♠), but not this way up.

Which opening (or pass)
Jinksy replied to apollo1201's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Seems marginal, but I agree with Kaitlyn - I'd open at MPs only. -
This is almost certainly false. I doubt anyone here does, I've never encountered it in a club, and would certainly not assume it in a pickup partnership.

At least 11 trumps

You'll be playing in 4♥ anyway if P with that hand hears you splinter. -
As others have said, rightsiding is all but irrelevant here, but even as a general rule, it should be near the bottom of your list of priorities when thinking about how to bid a hand, especially early in the auction when you have no idea what each other have.

So if you double on the north hand, how high are you willing to go to introduce hearts? Ie if 2♠/3♠ (or even 4♠?) comes back, will you bid hearts, or double again? -

I'm sure you would, but based on similar recent threads on here I'd expect more for 2H planning to X another spade (or perhaps diamond) bid. Isn't this close to the canonical hand for that sequence? -
Clarifying my thought, E's X for me would be 'we're beating 3N and I'm confident we can do something if they run'. Which might be another way of saying what you're saying - but it should surely set up a forcing pass, or very strongly indicate another action. That makes W's failure to bid 4♥ dubious, but E's failure to X again more so.

I think double of 3N meant 'I've got enough strength to beat 3N'. IMO E has plenty to muster a second double.
