We were concocting a Long Beach team to try to compete, but got bounced by a fairly solid team with Howie Einberg and company, reality is we were very unlucky and our teammates seemed to screw the pooch on alot of hands like this one. Our East passed throughout our opponents bid an untouchable 5C, that was our semifinal experience, thought id get some feedback on these.

would tend to show values, it'd be penalty oriented

I honestly think passing is one of the worst calls in history. your partner is allowed to hold a 5 count here, do we really wanna let 1NT white go all pass?

I opened 1♣, I didn't think it was a close decision at all. My partner and I debated after, as he's much more aggresive and wide ranging with preempts, he said this was a clear 3♣ bid. Thanks for the replies.

I disagree. Partner probably has 3 of the top 4 spades, and something like two red face cards. I mean once we give partner the A and or Q of clubs plus the high spades, he's dangerously close to opening. idk, club seems like it loses too often whereas I can't imagine its likely a spade, then a club shift by partner doesn't win.

I'm leading a spade. club is gonna let them make on alot of hands I think where a club shift will be obvious to partner.

nobody is saying play for squeeze or play for finesse. You will be able to read the position at trick 12 against most non-experts. If the goal is to decide on 12 or 13 tricks, you can make that choice at trick 12 rather than trick 2, thats the point.

just as a matter of technique im cashing the diamond Q at trick 11. By then ill know what to do by what has shown up. I think we're all saying the same thing.

I could have made this negative double with a 4441 9 count, so if partner is heading to 5C alone I'm thinking he's something like 2119 with 9.5 tricks in hand or something like that. idk why with 8 solid and a side K I'm not bidding 3D over the negative double if its what partner has. 2 card clubs and K AQ A has got to be the nuts for a 5C bidder, so exploring for 7 has to be right.

I suspect the trouble is when partner is 4144, now when you bid 1H, partner bids a spade and you're bodog'd into 2S or 1NT, either way missing the superior club contract. well life sucks then you die, bid 1H.
