I like the idea of a feature where one could make the auction go away for the dummy play. I suspect the casual player is happy that it doesn't go away. So my slight preference would be that the auction not be visible after the lead, but I can understand the reason that it is the way it currently is, and I'm content if it doesn't change. Good topic imo.

Defending Against A Slam
jjbrr replied to gurgistan's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
You posted the scoring as imps. The difference between taking 2 tricks and 3 tricks against a slam is so small that it is almost negligible compared to the difference between taking 2 tricks and 1 trick. If the other table bids and makes the slam, 2 tricks and 3 tricks are no different. If the other table stops in game and makes it, the difference is one imp at most. If you let the slam make, you're losing ~15 imps. Would you rather have accuracy in taking the most tricks but not gaining any imps or in losing some accuracy but winning imps or at least not losing 15ish imps? -
Defending Against A Slam

Ya the K is obv on this hand. If the hand were different (JTx of ♠ in dummy), obv you should just encourage. If you had a void in ♣, for example, you should play the ♠Q, which can never be encouraging in ♠, since partner should lead the K from AK against a slam. -
shouldn't be. edit: slow pony is slowwwwwww

Partner Overcalls 1N. I Invite Game!
jjbrr replied to gurgistan's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Opposite a 1NT overcall, which most people play has a slightly wider/higher range, I would make sure we get to game on this hand. -
Pass. A plus score at MPs is so often a good score that trying to take six tricks rather than nine seems the smart move. If they were bidding 3♠, I may have missed some extra points, but there's no reason to expect them to bid again.

Ya, bridge is hard sometimes. I don't think it's wise to change anything just because of a hand like this.

Setting the record straight

lol you can't be serious. several people in this thread have admitted that they heard first-hand the experts' opinions on this matter. sounds like they were pretty open to me! just because you weren't there for the conversations doesn't mean they didn't happen. maybe "cheat" is too strong a word, but it seems pretty clear from what's been said that they think the bid is pretty remarkable. -
What's the shelf-life for an open bottle of wine? If i stick the cork back in or screw the top back on is it OK for a long time (a year?) or does air mess it up pretty quickly?

Oh i haven't voted in this poll yet. KI def was what I played most when I played blitz. It was really good because you only move the pieces one square at a time for the first several moves, so I could generally open up without losing any time at all from the clock. EZ game. Danish gambit is so baller for white. It tilts me when the opponent doesnt cooperate by taking my pawns. Or worse they take like one pawn and then don't take the others. Such a tease.

heh. I have no idea what the Ruy Lopez is and I don't remember what I taught you. I assume it was d4 then knights and bishops and stuff. I of course could look it up, but I'm lazy. Editing because I dont know notation ldo Ruy Lopez: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Ruy Lopez (late 16th century) also advised setting up the table so that the light was in your opponent's eyes. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! Dude was a priest, too. I don't think there's a name for d4...d5 Nc3...Nc6. In the d4 openings, white usually plays either c4 to help fight for the center (challenging the opponent's d-pawn), or c3, to support his own d-pawn. So it would be very unusual to voluntarily block the c-pawn with 2. Nc3 I edited because I don't know notation lol. Actually I just played black so much when I played a lot of blitz back in the day that I thought the King was always on the left. Does e4 e5 Nf3 Nf6 have a name?

I voted yes, 10%. I would open it for sure playing precision. I would probably not open it playing a standard system unless my partner expects this sort of thing.

I interpreted his question as "When partner shows a major suit raise, is he sometimes balanced and how does opener find out if he's balanced?"
-
Ah, but what if you have poor/undeveloped bidding judgment and know it?!...then you better have a well-defined system. No, I disagree. That's kind of like saying if you're a really bad driver and you know it, you better get a really big SUV so that you can get away safely with screwing up. Bidding judgment is not some voodoo magic that only a lucky few can obtain. It's a learned skill just like everything else. If you want to be good at it, you have to work.

With 5♠ I think it's better to bid 1♠ than redouble with 10+ points. I think this auction shows 4♠ and is angling towards game in NT. I think it's obv forcing. Partner redoubled, doubled, and bid a new suit. I think he's trying to tell us something!
