  1. Really another director should be called. I think E was dumb to claim, but W is not going to overtake.
  2. 4 tables = 8 pairs = 7 opponents => 21 or 28 boards 5 tables = 10 pairs = 9 opponents => 27 boards 6 tables = 12 pairs = 11 opponents => 22 or 33 boards If you want to play 24 or 26 boards then you have to go to the high number and curtail, which is really what a 3/4 Howell is doing.
  3. Well, no, it is our business, all of us. Otherwise a powerful country could go in to a smaller country under the guise of "to prevent the entrenchment of terrorist religious fanatics". We had enough of that last century.
  4. Looks like one off, losing a spade, a diamond and two clubs.
  5. West shouldn't be insisting anything, she should leave it to the Director. Sounds like you got a small town decision. Write a letter to the club, CC California Unit/ACBL, and then don't go back.
  6. We play this but we just have a 4x4 grid with scores : 420 110 -50 80 90 650 150 -100 -200 170 450 50 100 200 140 620 Can be the same for everyone or same numbers different layout. Individual movement. Small prizes for row, column, diagonal, four corners Big prize for most numbers completed. Hard to complete in one session. I wouldn't do a slam. It's meant to be a fun night where skill doesn't matter.
  7. Arrow-switching is messy, but I don't think the players need to wear overalls ;)
  8. If playing weak NT then the 1NT rebid won't be available with a weak opener.
  9. The final pass could be considered as an unintended bid. - Oh bother, I've just found another card, I'd like to bid 3H now, "Director !" I don't think that's the case here, but the Laws would allow it, IMHO. Just as an aside, if the bidding goes Pass - Pass - Pass - Pass and 3rd hand then claims to have made an unintended bid, are they allowed to open ? This would be open to abuse, with say 11 HCP, waiting to see if LHO is going to pass.
  10. I know a lot of bridge players who would regard arguing about a claim as the social highlight of their evening :)
  11. "didst swallow toothpaste by the tube"
  12. Declarer may also be hiding a revoke. "The board is good." Heh heh. Ruffed a diamond but I still have one. Anyway, it's just courtesy to show one's cards. Same if conceding.
  13. But how do you draw the line ? Based on masterpoints ? Pfui.
  14. Seeding = ranking the pairs top to bottom The process of then sewing them evenly throughout the room is different. Maybe this should be called scattering ? Spreading ? Dispersal ?
  15. Or if Advancer has a balanced 10-11 and passed the 2NT overcall, +120.
  16. Another option for 18 boards is to do a Web. I think you can do 24 or 26 or 28 boards.
  17. How can you play 27 boards with 18 tables ? If you play one-board-per-round you have to then do another half a round, not very fair. If you play two-boards-per-round then you won't complete the 36-board movement. Yes, you can just matchpoint within each section, but you might as well have the same boards in both sections and get more comparisons.
  18. Agree entirely. Don't assume that everyone posting or reading this forum is a qualified and experienced director. That is not who the forum is for, surely, although I get the feeling that some here consider that the plebs shouldn't be allowed to speak. And careful with the abbreviations please.
  19. I have mine as a blank spreadsheet, based on the New Zealand simple CC. I find Word a pain in the ass for this sort of thing.
  20. Beacause the British know when to stop. Americans just drag an idea out for as long as it is marketable.
  21. No disrespect was intended. :) I am only considering how the average or majority of bridge players are to understand when to alert, particularly when playing outside of their normal club session.
