Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
andrei replied to Aberlour10's topic in The Water Cooler
I have seen my country being crushed by 45 years of russian communism. 20 years after and there still is a very long way to go. This and this reason alone and it is mind-boggling the "hate" of western europeans towards US. I guess they hated the excessive use of military violence in the WWII also. Also, don't you find it strange that the attitude of eastern europeans towards US, even though they were betrayed by Roosevelt at Yalta, is it much different than the attitude of western europeans? -

first Al Gore and now Obama, both with major achievements towards world's peace. Who is now selecting the winners of Nobel Peace Prize? Nancy Pelosi? Oprah? -
IMP, unfav ♠KJ5432 ♥KT73 ♦93 ♣T P - P - ?? Does it matter if opps are vulnerable too?

if anybody know, did he have any previously health-related problems? I am just curios if swine flu can inflict so much damage in a healthy person.

what would you lead after 1N - 3N ??
andrei replied to andrei's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I don't think the actual result necessarily reflects the advantages of the spade lead. You hit partner with a perfect holding; you migth just as easily have led a club and found AQx. The spade lead's advantage is primarily that it's a solid suit, so when partner's holding in the suit is limited, you haven't blown a trick. A better result to illustrate would be if partner had 9xx in both suits, and the club lead gave away the game-winning trick. Catching partner with the perfect holding is more random (although the fact that dummy didn't use Stayman is push toward the major). oh, don't get me wrong, i was only interested in what people think about leading a club as opposed to a spade. I don't consider what hapenned in the actual board very relevant, I have only posted the facts in case someone was curios :) -

♠Q is the winner, finding partner with AKxxx our teammates lead a small club, so I was wondering how much merit has such a lead. not much, based on the answers here. -
I have passed, but I think I am convinced now that I should have bid on. Anyway, this time pass was the winner, when partner had: ♠AKQJ ♥KQxx ♦ATx ♣xx and the ♣ finesse was off.
-
IMP, you hold: ♠Txx ♥AJT9xx ♦x ♣Kxx Partner deals and opens: 1♦ - pass - 1♥ - pass - 4♥ - pass - ?? Would you pass or bid on? If you move on, what would you bid?
-
I would add some (2-3) points to CHO and subtract them from LHO.
-
I will bid one more .... I think there are too many layouts which allows 4♠ to make, against any lead ...

edit: nevermind

so this is what supposedly happenned: - Bush is trying to convice Chirac to go to war against Iraq, he is talking about Gog and Magog - Chirac asks his advisers "who is Gog and Magog" - the advisers are calling professor Thomas Romer from Lausanne - professor : "but why are you asking?" - advisers: "you know, president Chirac just had a top secret conversation with Bush about invading Iraq, and Bush was trying to convince Jacques using the Gog and Magog hyperbole" I mean no disrespect, but how naive one should be to believe all this is true?

I have an HP laptop, AMD dual-core, Windows Vista. I am using BBO windows client, version 5.2.6. If the laptop is powered then no problems at all, however if the laptop is working on battery then BBO freezes. Any idea why this is hapenning? A few month ago I had a DELL laptop, Intel dual-core with Windows XP. Never had any problems with it, neither powered nor on battery.

I think we should know their opinion about George W Bush before naming them "heroes" ...

I don't want to sound disrespectful, but it seems you don't know what you are talking about. Read it again, he was talking about Lendl changing his game for the grass. ok, could be this way too, I thought he was refering to Sampras.

I don't want to sound disrespectful, but it seems you don't know what you are talking about. Sampras have been doing server & volley for only 2 weeks a year? C'mon, that was his game. He has been doing s&v for 50 weeks a year, the only 2 weeks when he played another style was at French, and maybe that's why he didn't do better. That is simply not true, in my opinion. It is much more dificult to win on clay against players that are specialized on clay and to win on grass against players that are specialized on grass courts, than it is to face Andy Roddick on clay or grass and beat him over and over. Think about swimming, Michael Phelps won 5 individual golds at 2008 Olympic Games. However, he almost lost the 100 meter butterfly against Milorad Cavic. Cavic only races 100 meter butterfly, only trains for that. If Phelps would compete against the same swimmers over 5 individual races, do you think he will have any sorts of problems?

Anyone know what your average doctor in Canada makes? don't know that, but I know it is not easy to become a doctor in Canada. I know plenty of imigrants who have graduated medical schools in their home countries and are trying to become a doctor in Canada, it seems there are lots of exams and very few positions available

In Canada: 1. My girlfriend had a ski accident at 8:30 PM. We arrived at the closest hospital ( 100 km from home) at 9:30PM, some doctor saw her and told us there was an ACL tear. He said we should wait for an X-ray because that's the procedure, although ligament damages does not show at X-ray's. At midnight we were told that the radiologist is in surgery and we would have to wait 3-4 more hours. We left for home. In the end it turned out the bone was broken and valuable time has passed by. 2. I went to family doctor trying to get an appointment to an urologist, I had to wait 3.5 month for it. It didn't seem to be an urgent case at first, but it became after a few months. 3. I had myself an ACL and meniscus tear, the reconstruction surgery was done 6 month after.

Maybe he couldn't because Nadal and Federer are so great. The guy played in 30 tournaments in 2007 and his head-to-head record against Federer was 0-3 and against Nadal was 0-1.

You totally misunderstood my "level of competition" argument. I am sure Federer would SLAUGHTER Borg or Laver or whatever, but this will never happen because they will never play against each other. So then how do they measure who is the GOAT: by the number of GS tournaments won. Was it easier for Federer to win GS that it was for Sampras? I'd say yes, because of the LEVEL OF COMPETITION (meaning the other tenismens) they had to face. I just presented my arguments why I think it was more dificult to win GS tournaments 15 years ago as opposed to today, because then there were many players specialized on a single surface. Nowadays the claycourts are playing much faster then 15 years ago and the grass courts much slower. The grass from Wimbledon is not the fastest surface anymore, if you believe John McEnroe the surface from US Open is. Lets look at todays "top" players. Davydenko was number 4 in the world in 2007 without reaching any final of any tennis tournament that year until late October in Moscow. Andy Roddick has only 4 wins against Top 10 players in slams for his whole carrer, 2 of them coming after his opponent retired. I don't know if you played individual sports or not, but if you do not recognize the importance of mental factor I'd guess not.
