  1. That is also illegal. Suppose you want to play loose preempts against takeout doubles and disciplined ones against penaly doubles. I want to play penalty doubles against loose preempts and takout against disciplined ones. What happens? It is my understanding that this is why one side must decide first, and the side that acts first must commit. However, I am not a laws expert, so maybe I should not be answering. Clearly you can alter your style of preempt or opening based on what the opponents are playing (or your feel or whatever). Also, I like to open weak 2's a little heavy in 3rd seat, is that a problem? (you gets some nasty remarks from opps if you open a weak 2 with 13 hcp for example) Bill
  2. Unless you are playing a canape system the frequency with which a 1S opening would be 4 cards is so low that you would be better off playing 1S opening shows a 5 card suit. There may be some advantage to opening 1H with a 4 card suit. Bill
  3. Perhaps, but in that case 2D should not also show the majors...
  4. Yes the vulnerability and seat of partner should make a huge difference in how light you will reply. I had heard it said that replying light to improve a misfitting contract should only be done NV, but it seems there would be a great advantage to get out of a bad fit if vulnerable (esp at MP's) if you were looking at say 3=4=5=1 after partner's 1C opening: Opps can pass 1C out and get +300 or 400 or more. I do see on the other side a danger of getting too high and X'd... Bill
  5. I noticed that GIB's system has a balancing X of 1nt as 5-5 in the majors, and also plays Capp so 2D shows the same thing. Bill
  6. Would the vulnerability make a difference as to how weak you would respond? Bill
  7. If you knew you couldn't play or didn't want to in the next level, why not have a 5 man team, so when you drop there is still a team left to send? Bill
  8. In an indy, i think 1NT may be the most practical rebid. Bill
  9. Will do, it will be 2nd week of July in D.C. thanks for the info, yes there are a couple of good players in my club who need some small number of gold points, so I thought this would be a fun way to get them. Bill
  10. I am interested in trying out the ko's at the next regional. How do they work? i.e. in a round of 12 boards (compact) do you play 6 boards, compare then another 6? In a session of boards regular KO do you play 3 sets of 8 or 4 sets of 6? Also, do all brackets pay gold points? Bill
  11. I am trying to find if i agree with ANY part of your post. Sorry can't find any! 2H in the passout seat shows an intermediate hand for most. The 4th seat opener is not fine. It is certainly not right to open any hand in the 4th seat. Do you have any reasoning or data to back this? (I have at least this hand to cite) Why wouldn't Drury invite them into the auction? I don't always express myself very well, but yes opening in 4th seat with a reasonable hand i.e. like this one is winning action: forget the spade+points=15 rule. Also this is acceptable for a 2♥ opening its a matter of style. Bill
  12. The 4th seat opener is fine, I would possibly open 2♥ but 1♥ probably works better. If you have any kind of a hand in 4th seat it is almost always right to open. East should bid Drury if he(she) has that available, 2♥ practically invites N/S into the auction. Bill
  13. I would like to see Deep Finesse for Mac (and I don't mean running on virtual windows either) Bill
  14. seems like a horrible TO double, 1♠ is right. Bill
  15. Obviously this agreement is very dependent on range. maybe not. If opps pass out 1NT-(2c)-P-(P) seems like partner has some values regardless of the NT range. Bill
  16. a scheme that looked promising to me when partner opens 1N is: pass of 2m/1N is forcing X penalty. Pass of 2M/1N is not forcing X is take out. Bill
  17. I also am interested in playing EHAA. there isn't much written on it, but I like to play 10-13 NT 1st and 2nd seat with 12-15 3rd and 4th seat. Open all balanced hands (with 5cM) 1NT if in that range. The system works surprisingly well but I think it is best to play 5cM with it. Bill
  18. I have noticed in the archives that the discussion at the bottom of the page is about another event or hand, can that be fixed? Bill
  19. Having weak 2C and 2D puts more pressure on 1D not less. You're also putting more pressure on your 1N which is a four-pt range instead of the more common 3-pt range. Some would say (others would differ) that your 1C has more pressure because it handles 16 pt balanced hands. Some play 1C is 16 unbalanced or 17 balanced. You haven't described your 1D rebids after 1M response. What do you bid after 1D-1S for instance? And after your rebid, how does responder invite and force? How do things proceed in a sensible way? Does a 1N rebid handle everything with spade shortness? How do you show a 5m/5m? Do you open that 2N? Do you jump rebid to 3C? Does a 2C rebid show 6 clubs or a 5m/5m? I think you need to tell us more about your structure. Whatever it is, there's no way your constructive bidding will be as sound. Whether having a 2C and 2D preempt is worth that loss is something you'd have to test at the table. Personally, I think it's a big loss, but perhaps you'll find out differently. We played this system thursday night and it worked fine. The main thing is after a 1♦ opening you have to allow for the possibility that opener's suit is ♣'s. The only hand that presented a problem was this one: QT6.Q.AT3.KQ9753 opposite J43.9873.KQ54.J8 where the bidding went: 1D-(X)-P-(1H)//2C-(2H)-P and we missed a club partial. Maybe I with the right hand should have bid something? Anyway I personally like having a 4 point NT range. The advantages of opening 1NT are so great that it is well worth widening the range no matter what system you play. After 1D-1S you would bid your minor at the 2 level, perhaps 1NT with 1=4=4=4. And I don't know how this will work, but we made a 2NT opening 5-5 in the minors. Bill
  20. You mean a 2nd seat, red vs. white, 5 card weak two bid with a side four card major? yes
  21. Having 2♣ and 2♦ as weak 2's would take some pressure off the 1♦ opening. Also I am right now watching board 19 in the spingold where a weak 2 club would direct a lead to beat 3NT ...
  22. A new partner wants to play precision with all 2 level openings in a suit weak, 1♦ opening shows all unbalanced hands without a 5 card major; 1NT 12-15 all balanced hands including 5-3-3-2. Any thoughts?
  23. win heart ace then club jack... Bill i am guessing rho has the club T, if not you can still finesse the next time.
  24. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sa92hq83dkt94ckq9&w=s53hajtdqj732caj2&e=s8h976542da65ct63&s=skqjt764hkd8c8754]399|300|Scoring: MP 1♦-P-P-3♠ P-4♠[/hv] played this hand last night. (I was north) Bill
