Hello! I moved to Taipei, Taiwan from the USA for work and I am looking for a chance to play bridge here. Is there anyone on this forum who is from Taiwan who could provide information on clubs or groups in Taipei? Or if anyone has visited and knows about clubs? I've looked at the Taiwan Bridge Website and my Chinese is not good enough to get information from it. 謝謝!

So this is going to sound stupid, but I just managed to get my computer to log on. I think it had to do with my Sophos Antivirus software using the ports (It was spamming port 80 and had two hits on 3336). I disabled all its functions and tried to log on and... voila. The weird part to this is that I'd had the software for ages and it was never a problem before. I have no idea why it suddenly became an issue. An update on their end, perhaps?

Thanks for trying :( Is there a way to clear all recognition that my computer has ever interacted with BBO or is that only through cookies?

me:~ melaptop$ telnet v2proxysl1.bridgebase.com 3336 Trying 192.155.229.163... Connected to v2proxysl1.bridgebase.com. Escape character is '^]'. So it looks like it connected

I'll also mention that I can't think of any change that I made to my computer when this became an issue. I was able to log on perfectly normally before this. It just seems like it coincided with the original poster's problems.

Firewall is off and has been. I'm scanning through my router settings too to see if there's anything I can find there, but given other computers work I suspect that's not it.

The following two lines showed up in Console upon the "Connection lost" message appearing: 7/1/14 11:25:03.364 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[24]: Killing auth hosts 7/1/14 11:25:03.364 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[24]: Session 100020 destroyed Though if I try to log in repeatedly it doesn't repeat those lines.

Yes, I'm using East4Evil. I'm able to log in on another computer I own, so for now I have access, but it'd be nice to be able to log in on my primary computer. I assume it's an issue with this computer specifically but I don't have the slightest idea what the problem is.

I go to bridgebase.com, click on the "Click to Play or Watch Bridge" link, the normal page pops up, I enter my user name and password, and click "Log In." The page thinks for maybe 10 seconds, and then returns me to the login page and displays a message that says "Connection lost." This started only a few days ago, I'd guess? I also tried an old user name and I couldn't login on that either.

I am having the same issues. I am able to log in via my friend's computer (nearly identical to mine, MacBook) on the same wifi network using the same browser (Chrome). Other browsers (Safari) don't work, and neither of the links provided above works. At least I'm glad this is a known issue. FWIW I can also successfully log in on the app using the wifi network available as well.

"Technically" West could be 0=6=7=0 or 0=0=7=6 so no ruffing line is completely safe?. :P

Losing a match by 2 IMPs - part 2
kayin801 replied to mr1303's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
We need to throw in a 2♥ call before it's too late, and then we let partner decide what to do going forward. Partner could have the big hand at the table! If partner were passed I would think passing is more reasonable. -
If I'm gonna be able to make a t/o X later I would X now. If after they start bidding spades I can't make a t/o X then I guess I'm endplayed into bidding 2♣.
-
This. If X would be penalty then partner has no other way of inviting (assuming 3♠ is just competitive)
-
Since no one else actually answered your question: If 4NT is key card then you're pretty committed to playing in hearts and partner could easily pass 5H. Therefore 5NT looks like asking for a choice of slams; responder might have been trying for grand if you had the Q but without the Q 6NT could be better. Seems weird to play this as a grand try if you were interested in the heart Q and got a negative response. I do agree with others that 4NT should be a quantitative invite with exactly 5 hearts, especially if Texas is available, but this way isn't unplayable.

Phil's analysis looks spot on. Doesn't opener's bidding look consistent with something like AT9x, Kxx, AJTx, xx, and he was giving partner a chance to reopen with a X instead? But now with the 3D bid the spade A opposite partner's stiff looks good, so he bumps to game. Anyway, it's a bit scary to bid 4S, though I suppose if we can read the cards we might hold it to down 1.
-
After 1C-1H (5+ spades) my partner and I play 1S as you do, starting asks, and 1NT as a general asking bid looking for more info on partner's shape. Then partner can start to pattern out.

I think so but you have to duck 2 clubs to set up the major suit squeeze against LHO. If after winning the heart K LHO switches to a diamond and then RHO plays a diamond when in on the second round of clubs you have to duck that diamond now in lieu of ducking a 2nd club. I think you're okay now, even if LHO overtakes and squashes the heart ten.

I think in "typical" UvU one bid shows a negative X and the other shows a limit raise in partner's opener. It's up to you to decide which is which, and just depends on the partnership. If you hold a gun to my head I'm bidding 3H. I admit to wanting to bid 4S over their 4m and also admit it could be very wrong. -

653 K976542 876 void
kayin801 replied to straube's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Partner's hand is gonna be more useful to me in hearts than mine is going to be to him in spades, even with that void. Plus, yeah, we can show spades later or let partner bid them. Only question is whether we wanna show the direct heart bid or the neg X heart bid with UvU. I don't have a problem with either but I don't really wanna defend, and I'm worried partner will think my hand is too strong defensively with 3H.
