Basic question here - when you have a 2/1 auction that establishes a 5-3 fit at the two level, something like this: 1♠ 2♣ 2♥ 2♠, or similar, what then should be bid at the 3 level? Can controls be shown? I've read some posts that say 'the 3-level is for patterning out', but what does that mean when you've already shown 9+ cards?

Why do you reckon non-best to be the true test, out of interest? Wouldn't this mean defending a lot more hands, which the robots don't do very well, so there'd be a lot of random scores? Just from playing that last event, I reckon the vast majority of my bad results were on me, and I only rarely felt frustrated with a GIB horror bid. Add in a load of GIB defensive nonsense and it might start to detract from things. Perhaps a skilled player can operate GIB better in defense and it's not that bad.

Matchpoints Bid or Not

PhilG talking sense here - proof that the sun does indeed shine on a dog's arse every once in a while. 2S for me as well. -
Those are some ropey spades I'm looking at. Don't mind either of 4S or 5D but I think I'd double tbh, which doesn't seem a popular choice. Must imply spades as Nige1 indicates. Would 4N have play here if pard bids it in response to the X, showing a flat-ish hand and a couple of H stops?

Frequently bypass 4+ diamonds question

Thks gwnn - Sounds rel straightforward when you put it like that, guess you just have to get going with it. -
Frequently bypass 4+ diamonds question

How easy is it to fit transfer Walsh into an existing 2/1 system? I'd like to play it, but I've seen some notes that point to it being quite a comprehensive, systemic overhaul - if that's the case then it's not going to be feasible in my main two partnerships. If it's simpler than that, as your 1NT transfer analogy suggests, then I should get on with learning it. -
Opening 1NT at 3rd and 4th seat

Do you look for a 5 card minor to open a 14 count against gib, or is any 4342, 4333 etc ripe for an upgrade? I tend to like a 5 card suit as the basis for upgrading 14s in real life [there are of course other considerations], but bashing the bots around is a different game. See plenty of off-shape / off range 1NT openers getting thrown around. -

Likewise following gp3 - prefer to get them played this weekend before the Christmas booze train leaves the station, but whatever suits folk.

Just waiting on leonyu92 and olegru to accept challenges. I see Oleg has let stuff expire this week so is maybe away?

Is it playable to have all doubles as penalty after we have opened 2♣ strong in a natural system? Had a few opps chancing their arm recently with some light lead-directors that it would have been nice to penalise. One particular auction went 2♣ 3♣ pass 3♥ back to me, holding 21+ with six good hearts [possibly opps had a mixup over what their 3♣ showed]. We've not discussed X here but I thought 'I am smashing this to bits rar now' was a reasonable interpretation, but pard took it as show me what you've got and we bid a normal game. Maybe it's best for strong hand to just pass for the re-opening X and go from there as a more flexible approach?
-
Yes please. Ty frank0 for continuing to organise.
-
Thks - I did actually bid 2N at the table as I figured pard could use NMF if he had some stuff. It didn't feel like a sound bid, though, to go 2N with an established 8 card+ fit in a major?
-
Had this hand in a teams game last night that had me a little stumped on how best to handle it [spots are approximate] [hv=pc=n&s=saqjhqj76daj6ckj6&d=e&v=n&b=2&a=p1cp1hp]133|200[/hv] With pard being unlimited I didn't want to plough a 4♥ or 3N bid straight off, but 3♥ or 2N don't seem ideal, either. What is best?

To those skilled in the art of interpreting Gib's cue bids - does this sequence have a definite meaning, cue-bidding a void twice? Passed it out like a spanner, the 6♣ bid confused me. http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer.html?bbo=y&lin=st||md|1SK982HAQ3D3CAJT92,S73H652DKQJ982CK4,SAQJT64HKT9DAT76C,S5HJ874D54CQ87653|sv|B|ah|Board%207|mb|1C|an|Minor%20suit%20opening%20--%203+%20!C;%2011-21%20HCP;%2012-22%20total%20points|mb|2D|an|Aggressive%20weak%20jump%20overcall%20--%206+%20!D;%2010-%20HCP;%203+%20total%20points|mb|2S|an|Free%20bid%20--%205+%20!S;%2011+%20total%20points;%20forcing|mb|P|mb|4S|an|3+%20!C;%203+%20!S;%2021-%20HCP;%2016-22%20total%20points|mb|P|mb|5C|an|Cue%20bid%20--%205+%20!S;%20!CA;%2015+%20total%20points;%20forcing|mb|P|mb|5H|an|Cue%20bid%20--%203+%20!C;%201+%20!D;%203+%20!S;%2021-%20HCP;%20no%20!DA;%20!HA;%2016-22%20total%20points;%20forcing|mb|P|mb|6C|an|Cue%20bid%20--%205+%20!S;%20!CAK;%2019+%20total%20points;%20forcing|mb|P|mb|P|mb|P|pc|DK|pc|DA|pc|D5|pc|D3|pc|D6|pc|D4|pc|C2|pc|D2|pc|HA|pc|H2|pc|H9|pc|H8|pc|HQ|pc|H6|pc|HT|pc|H4|pc|H3|pc|H5|pc|HK|pc|HJ|pc|S4|pc|S5|pc|SK|pc|S3|pc|S2|pc|S7|pc|SA|pc|C3|pc|H7|pc|C9|pc|CK|pc|D7|pc|C4|pc|DT|pc|C7|pc|CT|pc|CA|pc|DQ|pc|S6|pc|C8|pc|S9|pc|DJ|pc|ST|pc|C6|pc|CQ|pc|CJ|pc|D9|pc|SJ|pc|C5|pc|S8|pc|D8|pc|SQ| ETA - sorry, that's come out really small. Is there a way of enlarging it in the code?
