Both deserve all of the blame. X of 2N is obvious, I hate XX here because I think I need to start describing my distributional hand rather than just blindly saying I have 10+ HCP, and 3N is insane. Countering that, South opened the bidding with 4 useful HCP, and decided to reopen 3D over 2N. When everyone makes mistakes that contribute 100% to the result, then everyone shoulders all of the blame. I never understood ATB's in situations where both parties screwed up in obvious ways - who cares who is the most to blame, just learn what you can and fix what you can so that it doesn't happen again.

nonsense deleted. This appears to be a tougher hand than I thought - we might be better positioned with the Q of hearts at trick 2 rather than the AK of spades, sets up the same 1 trick, but has the possibility of 2, while either creating an entry or a tempo. -
Responses after lead-directing X of splinter
CSGibson replied to Wwchang's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
I am a simple man, so here is my simple structure: Pass - interest in slam, no 1st round club control, not wanting to take control immediately. Cue - focuses on other non-trump suit, interest in slam, ambiguous towards club control XX - first round club control 4M - no slam interest opposite a typical splinter. -

Still, you can play west for H9x or HHx...I'd be tempted to play for HHx because it would be unusual not to unblock from that combination, personally. I was thinking about this in terms of restricted choice - if RHO wins the Q, and LHO the ace on the first two club plays, then do the restricted choice mathematics cancel each other out for the three honor combination, leaving psychology to figure it out? -

why does he need all of that, Rainer? One lead from East, lead back from W to E's club honor, and lead back from East...do you play high or the 8? W does not need HH9x, he just needs you to misguess. -

Lose 6 vs 1N making 3 at the other table.

They cashed their heart, which would have led to a pointed suit squeeze except I played too fast and screwed it up - a discarding mistake by east let it come home anyway, and it was win 10. And apologize for the small size. I'm using media to get the hands from myhands, is that wrong?

East was an American player with a star by his name, so he's won something. I don't know much about him other than that.
-
I was seriously considering bidding 6♠ over 5♠...and I would have taken the push if necessary since I would have no idea who can make what.
-
Your suggestion is noted and disagreed with in context of our system, which employs a weak NT - basically if we employed your method, we should make the bid with a good 6 to a bad 8 HCP, and nothing else ish, or we wouldn't know what to do when we had a strong NT.
-
I don't understand this. Partner has short hearts, and anytime you have a game, and the majority of the time when you have a making partscore, partner will balance. On the other hand, if you double you are entering a live auction at the 2 level where only one opponent has limited themselves, where you have 12 working HCP outside of their suit, and with unexpectedly terrible shape. What about this hand says that we should be declaring on hands where partner would pass out 2H?

[hv=pc=n&n=sq987hk93dakq97c2&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=pp1h2d3d4d4h]133|200[/hv] You chose not to start with X because you don't play equal level conversion, and 1N did not appeal to you. Do you have anything to say over 4♥?

[hv=pc=n&n=sajtht86daq4caqt6&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1c(2+%20%5B4432%5D)d3c(preemptive)pp3sp4s]133|200[/hv] 2/1, weak NT, and playing a potentially short club (4432 only). Partner's raise to 3♣ is sufficiently preemptive that you should not bid 3N with 18-19. edit: I should also mention that we won, 57-43. So there is no angst in these problems.
-
Addition to the problem - there are some agreements over reverses, specifically Ingberman (ie, lebensohl, any direct 3 level bid would be forcing to game).
-
its really annoying that I played these boards, all the things I want to say are tainted...
-
Two wins for the Forums, baby! Thanks Dan, Jeff, Dan's partner, it was fun playing with you guys.
-
Do you know who are teammates are, or which table we'll play at? IE, do we need to discuss defenses to multi & other assorted 2 bids that JEC won't use, but that his teammates will?
-
Unblock. Partner has to have a good reason to lead his suit instead of yours, and QJT may be sufficient. And I don't think this is one of the situations that its right to lead high from 2 honors - partner is liable to be short, and you are likely to crash one of 3 potentially helpful honors by leading high.
