  1. Surely an unnecessary topic for this forum? Or does "general" bridge discussion translate to "easy" bridge discussion for some? regards thebiker Brian Keable
  2. I don't know what is standard I normally play that 3C and 3D are nf long suits and that 3H shows 5+ and is forcing - thats what some Acol players appear to play regards Brian Keable alias thebiker
  3. I don't think it appropriate to ask such provocative questions as "How bad is this guy" Surely more appropriate to ask the forum what they would bid? Have you considered that the player thought he would almost certainly get a plus score by passing and could see no clear cut bid available that would deliver a plus. Double, 4NT and 5C or 6C are all flawed to some extend, on the right day all will deliver a plus score, but there are bad days as well. regards Brian Keable alias thebiker
  4. Isnt there a case for a red blooded rebid of 3C by opener? 2C is a bit wimpy - don't think even an old grannie in our part of the globe would give it a passing thought. regards Brian Keable alias thebiker Angleterre
  5. Have just realised that there are 13 cards per hand Declarers shape 3253 not 3263
  6. Playing pairs (MP's) LA You are West S W N E 1H 1S 2D 2S 3S P 4D P 5D Partner leads A of clubs - your agreement is that A leads ask fo reverse count K or Q leads for reverse attitude Dummy A4 AKQT9 QT3 972 West (thats u) KQJ3 J764 96 J104 How do you defend? If you play the 4 of clubs partner may thing you are showing an even no and perhaps try to give you a ruff, by cashing her K of clubs and setting up declarers Q of clubs. So should you play a higher club ie the T or maybe the J to show an odd number of clubs? That doesn't look right either because now one can never trap the Q of clubs. At the table I played the J of Clubs and presumablely partner must have thought I had the Queen, for she cashed the second club and played a third. Declarer now had plenty of time and entries to set up hearts and discard two losing spades. How should we have approached this defense playing our existing methods? Would a better method have worked if available? Declarers shape 3263 regards thebiker
  7. Dealer West MPs EW Vul W N E S 1NT P 2D (trnsfer) 2S 3H ? Your bid? with 543, AKQ, Q, 965432 1NT was 12-14 regards thebiker
  8. As an English player in EBU land I am amazed at the no of replies to this topic. Don’t bridge players have something better to do than write pages of geeky stuff on this most uninteresting area of the game?. No wonder no one wants to take up bridge any more! Bridge can never be a game of total disclosure, and we should not waste energy on trying to go down that road. Regards The Biker
  9. Many players play moreor less the same system after a double by opponents with the following exceptions XX shows 9 or 10 + and an interest in penalising the opponents, normal denies support for opener and at least 2 suits that might be useful to penalise the oppoents with. Immediate raises tend to be a bit weaker than normal Most players play a 2NT response to show a good raise to openers suit. Many players play fit jumps, so that a jump in a new suit, shows that suit plus 4 card support for opener. Hope this helps I play in England - so some of my suggestions may not be univeral in other places best regards Brian Keable Alias the biker
  10. I would like to make two points (a) I was always taught (via the Sharples brothers Englands leading bidding theorists in the fifties - sixties - IMHO) that when one made a positive response to a 2C bid, the suit need only be a four carder, but ought to have a contain a minimum of 3 points - so I would say that the direct responses if making positive should be 2S not the space consuming 3D bid without points in diamonds. (:o The Sharples played that one could make a positive on A One & half QT's ie A + K, or equilivalent B 8 Points including 1A or 2K's C A major suit playable for 5 Tricks with the odds opposite Ax or Kx ie KQ109xx or KJ10xxx, or AQ109xx etc. The suit had to contain an A or K If a positive type A or B was made, the bidding could not stop below the level of 4NT. Playing this way it would not be possible opposite a genuine Acol 2C bid to stop in 4H with the responding hand. (I don't think the hand in question is an Acol 2C, if Acol Two's are available) I recall reading somewhere in the distant past that the late Jeremy Flint espoused a similar philosophy whereby after a positive, the partnership were committed to 4NT or higher. regard Brian Keable (alias the biker) Ancient Acol player
  11. Too many 2's of diamonds NT range?
  12. I play Sharples responses to 2C 2D is a -ve A positive is given on: (a) 1.5 Quick Tricks or better or (B) 8 points including 1 Ace or 2 Kings or © A major suit playing for 5 tricks (with the odds) opposite Ax or Kx) responder must have the A or K of the suit Responders precise hand type can be confirmed later via the bidding and the reply to openers 4NT inquiry 2C +ve bid bid 4NT asks 5C 1K 5D 2K 5H 1A + 5S 1.5 QT 5NT 2.0 QT etc
  13. Lets assume you want bid 4S direct, but feel you have a little bit to spare? Make a jump cue of 3C, then when you bid 4S, this should tell partner that you really do have a good spade suit, not some junky long spade suit. Of course if you think partner wont understand this exotic sequence - just respond 4S regards the biker
  14. Perhaps this isnt as interesting as I thought Seems perfect reasonable to play as penalty double Responder could be 4144 or similar with good values and take an easy penalty but couldnt he/she be short in the majors with good values looking for partner to convert with a W2S hand? does anyone think that two-way doubles in this sort of position may be worthwhile? regards thebiker.
  15. You are playing a Multi 2D (weak 2Ma 6-10, or bal 19-20, Any 4441, 18-21) and the auction goes: 2D (P) 2H (2S) P (P) X (P) In the absence of any firm agreements as to what partners double shows what hand type / hand types would you most expect partner to hold?? Should this double be for Penalty or Takeout or either ? The only arrangements you can rely on are: Partners possible responses after 2D are: 2D To play opposite a W2H (does not show hearts) 2S To play opposite a W2S (does not show spades), but has non serious / serious interest in hearts opposite a W2H 2NT ART asks partner for further definition of the 2D bid , in particular asks whether or no the possible W2Ma is bad or good in context. Responder expects to go reach game opposite non mimimum W2Ma 3H To play in 3H or 3S opposite a W2H or W2S regards Brian Keable (thebiker)
  16. Thanks everyone for your input so far. I don't mind hearing about complicated methods - I am an Acol player but like to learn what other players do It strikes me that Wolff Sign off players have some good ideas after 1m 1M 2NT but how do they play 1C 1D 2NT and 1H 1S 2NT Sequences? Does any one out there know any of the details of a version of Wolff played / devised by English internationals Raymond Brock and Tony Forrester some years ago. Bascially it went 1X 1Y 2NT 3C 3C Puppet to 3C a la Wolff 3D Checkback 3H Slam try for X 3S Slam try for Y I have never seen a full decription of all the sequences that they used and would like to know more many thanks Brian Keable alias thebiker
  17. I would be interested to learn where to find different responding structures after a rebid of 2NT in a natural system ie 1G 1P 2NT ? I am mainly interested in natural - Acol type systems, where a 2NT rebid normally shows 17-18 or 18-19 Any information on where to find different respoanding structures would be appreciated. ie books, magazines, or the internet or maybe even a copy of someones system notes Many thanks in advance Brian Keable (England) Alias thebiker
  18. I would like to be able to import a Duplimate file .dlm to a .lin file (movie) Is this possible or planned? In Dealmaster (producer of dlm files) I can generate hands with different specs for each player. Suppose I want to test our defence to the Multi I can get W (say) to have Multi 2D hands and N & S various hands I don't think one can do that with BBO(An excellent product) I would like to be able to import a dlm file - convert to a lin file and then use the resulting movie within partnership bidding. Ideally the W & E hand would not be shown (but W & E bids could be made by the table boss) then we could practice our defence to the MUlti ( or other bids) and then check up at the end of the auction on how we did. Is any of this possible now? Are there any future plans? Note a possible way to acheive this entirely within BridgeBase would be that during partnersship bidding, one could set constraints for W and / or E Many thanks any replies best regards Brian Keable (thebiker)
