  1. heh, the "sub" usually indicates our standard of play
  2. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=skxhkqxdjxxxcxxxx&s=sqt9xxxhaxdkxcaqx]133|200|[/hv] I sat South and our bidding went (playing SAYC) : 1S - (pass) - 1N - 2H 2S - all pass 1N = 6-10, NF 4 was cold. Should I bid more with my hand? Given pard responds 1N on a singleton spade too, I felt 3S was not an option, but maybe I am wrong. I thought that maybe pard was worth another bid, being around the top end of his 1N bid. Thanks for the comments! G
  3. Playing Sub-SAYC, you deal and hold : [hv=s=sxxxhxdakxxct98xx]133|100|[/hv] The bidding goes : Pass - (Pass) - 1C - (Pass) Your bid? You play inverted minors.. Thanks! Girish
  4. Justin, Would love to be in on this too! Girish
  5. Thanks for the explanations, helene_t and hrothgar! Reading hrothgar's explanation, I realize I did not draw the "obvious" conclusion that pard's hand was too weak for an immediate GF 2C response.
  6. Hi all! A couple of basic 2/1 questions from what happened last night at the club. I dealt and picked up [hv=v=b&s=skxxhakqxxdxxxcxx]133|100|[/hv] and opened the bidding 1H Pard responded 1N (forcing). I am relatively new to 2/1 so I rebid 2H. Is this correct? If not - what is my best rebid here? After 2H, pard responded 3C. Is this forcing or passable? I took it as forcing and pushed him into 3N, which went down easily after neither of us had any spade stoppers. Thanks! Girish
  7. Phil, Depends on whom I am playing with. With one pard, I bid 2S transfers to clubs (correct to diamonds) and with another, 2N => a transfer to diamonds. Given our (lack of) methods, a bid of a new suit after the transfer was accepted shows 4+ in the suit and slam interest. -G
  8. Thanks! Ant- How would the transfer-style Lebensohl work? That is, what are the responses and continuations in this case? Regards, G
  9. [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sxxxhaqjxxdajxcax&s=sxhk9xxdkq10xxxxcx]133|200|[/hv] Pard dealt as North and opened 1N (15-17). RHO overcalled 2C (alerted as natural). Sitting with the 7-4-1-1 hand and not playing doubles as stolen bids, I ventured a "confusing" 3H and we ended up in 4H, making 7 when they did not find the spade lead. My question is : How would people show such a hand and bid it to slam? Also what would 3C over 2C mean here? TIA! Girish
  10. LHO is atleast 5-5 in minors and has atmost 10xxxx in clubs, so I am going to play him for AJxxx in diamonds. Maybe a hand like x Kx AJxxx 10xxxx or - KQx AJxxx 10xxxx ? Draw trumps ending in hand (South) and lead the ten of diamonds. If LHO plays low, let the ten ride and play another diamond to the Q. LHO cannot afford to duck this as then I have no diamond losers and only a heart loser. If they fly Ace, the king of diamonds can be used for a heart discard. Ofcourse, if LHO Unu 2Ned on something like - KQx Jxxxx 10xxxx then I should play low diamond and hope LHO covers with jack :P
  11. Guilty as charged, although things are just beginning to look up :)
  12. When its posed as a problem, I know I need to shorten my trumps etc. At the table - I REALLY doubt I would find the club ruff play :P I might try it as an afterthought :P
  13. Old York : Good point, heh. Did not read o/p carefully enough to see the diamonds played.
  14. It seems we cannot avoid a club loser even if K clubs is onside, no? Unless RHO has exactly K 10 (with even K 10 x, on the lead of Q, RHO will go up with K and we cannot stop them scoring the 10), that is. So we need to either find the K of spades with RHO or to drop the singleton K of spades offside.. I agree with vuroth on the club play first. If we lose the club finesse, then we better find the K of spades in a finessable AND doubleton 10 of clubs, preferably with RHO, to avoid really sweating it :P My 0.02 -- could be way off base here, as always!
  15. Three rounds of spades might suffer a possible spade ruff, I suppose. So two rounds ending up in dummy. On the lead of A of hearts, E does best to throw a spade, and we do the same. Thereafter, the play is as I originally posted?
  16. I am around a (B+I)/2, so not hiding my reply! Seems like the play should go as follows. T2 : Small diamond to K. T3 : Ruff a club with small diamond. T4 : Small diamond to Q - getting the bad news as it were of the trump split. T5 : Ruff another small club. T6 : Lead the J of hearts removing last heart from E. T7-9 : Cash top three spades ending in dummy with the spade Q. Here, E has no hearts or spades, J 8 of diamonds and 2 clubs. I have A 10 of diamonds and 9 7 of spades in hand and the dummy has A Q 7 of hearts and K of clubs. On the lead of the A of hearts, if E discards a club, we discard a spade. if they ruff, we overruff and claim. Else, repeat :) Looks ok at first glance to me - but I could easily be quite mistaken! :-)
  17. Helene, thanks! What would opener's bid of 2H show in auction 1? awm : I see the idea behind the 3 card raise but this does assume partner's hearts are good enough that he can draw trumps, doesn't it? You mention the idea of finding out how many trumps opener has after the raise has been made by using the cheapest bid over 2M. What are the responses to this? I assume a rebid of 3M by opener in response would show 4 cards in support..
  18. Sorry, was probably being dumb there. Responder can then bid 2D I suppose. So if major suit is spades, I guess opener can bid 2H to deny 3 and 2S to show 3 ? If the major suit is hearts, it looks like 2S would deny 3...
  19. Another q : What if opener is not balanced and cannot rebid 1N? Say 1-3-3-6 so he/she rebids 2C. Is there still a way for responder to find out whether opener has 3 card support for the major? Thanks..
  20. jdonn and han : Ahh, ok, got it now. I should go look at NMF again, from this angle! Thanks, -G
  21. han, Sounds good but ..if I have 3 of the major bid by responder and he does have a game-going hand, isn't it important to find out if he has 4 or 5, since that will decide whether playing 3N or 4M is better? Quite possibly I am missing something here! Thanks, -G
  22. Thanks, helene...Googling NMF gives answers to my questions.
  23. Hi all! I have a fairly basic question. Can someone tell me some methods that people use in SAYC or 2/1 to find out the length of the responder's major? A standard auction I am looking for help with is : 1C - P - 1H or 1C - P - 1S and similarly after an opening bid of 1D. Thanks! Girish
