Microsoft is trying to persuade us to upgrade to the new Windows 10 operating system. I use Windows 7 which is fine for me at present. I use the windows version of BBO as I much prefer it to the Web version. It works fine with Windows 7. Does it work with Windows 8 (which I don't have) and will it work with Windows 10 please?

The other day I was playing in the main club with 3 GIB robots. At my table the bidding was as follows (dealer East). W N E S (Me) - - 1S 2H PASS 2NT PASS 4H ALL PASS I made 10 tricks. At every other table (all playing against 3 GIBS) the bidding began (1S) 2H but the GIB sitting North passed and the contract was 2H. My question is why did my partner choose to bid 2NT whereas all the other robots passed? Do GIBS bid randomly or did mine trust my bidding? JJ

The "shfft, shfft" sound is only a problem if you are using the web-based version which (so far as I can see) only gives the option of sound on or off. On the far superior original windows version, you can choose which sounds you want to hear.

The term "Informative double" is the original name of what people now call a "take-out" double which has several meanings including (a) Double by LHO of opening bidder (b) Double by 4th hand after both opponents have bid (e.g. (1S - pass (2C) double) In the early days of bridge such a double was penalties Sputnik double means a double by the opener's partner after an overcall, e.g. 1D (1S) double, where the double shows 4 hearts, less than 4 card support for partner and a weakish hand (say 8-10). Alternative term is negative double. However, many people play a "negative" double as a hand which could be strong but asking for more information.

I have exactly the same query but can take it a stage further as our website uses bridgewebs and I can down load all the hands which are saved as a single pbn file. Clicking on the file brings up all the hands and I can see any hand I like by clicking on it as it opens within BBO.. But I cannot do anything with the hand having opened it as it is as if it is a "read only" file. I want to be able to save a particular hand and then add the bidding, play etc but I can't find any way of doing this. JJ

I think that this is a great pity. I have used the windows version for years and even though I have tried the web version I simply don't like it. I will continue to use the windows version so long as I can

Why does the software not allow you to search using words of less than 4 characters. I typed in "How can I see my own BBO master points" and it wouldn't let me as it didn't like the words being short. Supplementary question is "How can I see my own BBO master points"? ! JJ

I have had the same problem when browsing "my hands" and clicking on a movie. The Gib button isn't working so I don't get the Gib evaluation of the hand

Having just got a new PC I have downloaded BBO Windows version which I prefer. When at a table it now sends an automated message to other players if they are slow asking them to bid or play. I think that this is rude. How can I turn this feature off please? Thanks

Importing a set of deals into teaching table
johnjo42 replied to johnjo42's topic in BBO Support Forum
Many thanks, Diana. Worked like a charm -
I have created a set of 4 deals saved as a single lin file. I can import the file into a teaching table and the first board appears. When I click "redeal" I get a message "End of set of deals. Subsequent deals will be randomly dealt", even though deals 2,3 and 4 haven't been played. Am I doing something wrong please?

Is it possible to amend movies after saving them
johnjo42 replied to johnjo42's topic in BBO Support Forum
That's brilliant, thank you, Jan -
Having created and saved a movie (cards and bidding) I would like to amend it by swapping some cards between the East and West hands and then to save the new version under another name. I know that I could simply start all over again but, being lazy, I'd rather try to amend the existing deal. Can this be done please JJ

Using full disclosure CC can damage opponents
johnjo42 replied to johnjo42's topic in General BBO Discussion
As the original poster, I seem to have generated a lot of heat. I think FD is great once you've learnt how to do it but my criticism is that you see the explanations of your partner's bids. This is fine so long as the opps don't object. You cannot see partner's alerts. I take Fred's point that people can sit with printed convention cards in front of them or even books. Perhaps Tony's idea of telling the opps in advance is the right one and, if they object, to turn it off. JJ -
It is also worth remembering that while it's tempting to criticise your partner's bad bidding/play at the table, it is not helpful and can be seen as rudeness. JJ

Playing with a regular partner, I misunderstod one of his bids and we ended up with a (deservedly) bad score. But if I'd been playing with a different partner our Full Disclosure CC would have been operating (unless we turned it off) and a full explanation of my partner's bid would have been displayed for everyone (including me) to see so the mix-up wouldn't have happened. Surely this can't be fair to opponents. At least with the alerting system only the opponents can see the explanation JJ

I have prepared a Full Disclosure card for use with a regular partner. Whenever we sit down to play together BBO "finds and loads" the card without being asked. This can be annoying because some people don't like Full Disclosure cards. How can I prevent this happening (other than deleting the card that is) Thanks

It also happen in reverse with some so-called novices or intermediates being better players than they like to advertise sometimes to gain access to (e.g.) the BIL lounge.

When I log into BBO I often receive offline messages and usually reply using the box provided when the person is offline. If I check my chat log from my hard drive the offline messages I receive are there but the replies aren't. Is there a way to retrieve them please so that I can check what I said.

I recently played a league match in a public club. We had banned chat from Kibs but were still getting chat from other members of the club who were chatting to "the club". I know it's possible to ban all chat but this would lose the ability to chat to the people at the table. My suggestion is that it should be made possible to exclude all chat apart from the other 3 people at the table. Could this be done? JJ

I have read the question and the answer but cannot understand how to use the "Full Disclosure" card. I have tried to create my own and have got as far as giving it a title but nothing else seems to work. The help pages don't seem to follow any pattern or method. Is there a simple tutorial or other step by step guide showing how we do this please? Will there be one in the new software? Many thanks

May I venture to suggest that this kind of mix-up only goes to show why a natural system (or as near natural as possible) usually pays dividends.
