  1. yes Most recently in summer 2001, and next in summer 2011... Both in Toronto. There was one in Vancouver in 1999, too.
  2. I'm not sure if this is really the best place to post this question... but here it is anyway: Does anybody have any knowledge of bridge-related software that I can run on my Treo 700wx (Windows Mobile OS)? I've Googled around and found a couple programs, but I'm hoping someone might have specific familiarity. Related question -- if I had a good template, I might do private scoresheets on the device. Anybody ever done this, seen a good template, etc? Alex
  3. Really? What do you think two American experts would play if they were playing together for the first time and had only a few minutes to prepare? I always thought it would be pretty close to BWS. Let me ask you something. Do you believe that the majority of US players are experts? (well, maybe they are on BBO....but only there.) Do you really believe that the MAJORITY of players are going to sit down and say "Bridge World Standard, partner"? Hell, they have a hard enough time counting to 13, remembering what trumps are, and following suit. Experts may say "BWS partner?". In real life, the majority of players, not being experts (read as meaning "professional or part-time professional or wanna-be professional level players), will not. Is this really that hard to comprehend? Since I don't read BW, nor do I know of anyone who has a subscription or copies to borrow, I am/was totally unaware that this is now the "popular" treatment. And I would expect that the majority of US (non-professional) players are in the same situation as myself. Edit: Notice nowhere have I said that I thought this was a bad treatment, or that it doesn't have merit. I can see how it does. It just caught me off guard that this has become the "expert" standard. Rereading carefully and in light of this response, I guess I misinterpreted your earlier post. I thought you were claiming that BWS wasn't particularly close to "expert standard". I guess you were really claiming that "expert standard" isn't relevant to "real life". I'm still curious about whether BWS is, in fact, basically what a pickup expert pair would play. Edit to add: BWS notes are available free online at http://www.bridgeworld.com/default.asp?d=b...d&f=bwsall.html.
  4. I think he probably meant the following: After 1D, - 1M = Normal, including 6-9 HCP with 6M - 2D = Multi-WJS (0-5 with 6H or 6S) - 2H = Reverse Flannery - 2S = Diamond raise Not saying this is good, but it's better than what he wrote.. Alex

  6. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=shxxxdkjt9xxxxcax]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Partner deals and opens 1S. What's your plan? I'm intentionally not specifying methods... curious about plans opposite a 2/1-style 1S as well as a Precision-style 1S. If you bid 1NT forcing, partner will bid 2H. Alex
  7. Given that the other system forum available here is "SAYC and 2/1 Discussion", I would say that anything other than SAYC / 2/1 belongs here. Non-natural is a misleading title.
  8. [hv=v=n&s=s432hk87dkq53cqj5]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] 1C - (P) - ?? Playing "normal" 2/1. Thanks for your comments.
  9. Shouldn't there be a broadcast now? What's up?
  10. The two posts you just quoted aren't in disagreement at all. He explained that when he has a preemptive raise to 4M, he sometimes bids 3NT. He also wrote that his explanation for 1M-(P)-3NT includes "occasionally a preemptive [Major] raise". What are you complaining about? That he didn't specify that the preemptive major raises included in 3NT have equal minor suit length?
  11. Inquiry -- You're right of course that including "not 5+/5+ minors" in the description was unneccesary. I guess that my point was that the 5+/5+ hands are taken out of the 1D, because 2NT shows them. Echognome -- I'm looking for help with our response/rebid methods after this 1D, not methods to compete against opponents' 1D.
  12. What methods would you want to play over the following nebulous 1D? 1D = 14-16 balanced or 11-15, 0+ diamonds, promises a 4 card major, not 5+/5+ minors. The rest of the system includes strong 1C (16+ unbal or 17+ bal), mini NT (10-13), 5-card majors, 2C = 11-15 5+C no 4cM, 2D = 11-15 5+D no 4cM, 2NT = 11-15 5+/5+ minors -- so I think my description of the hand types in 1D is correct. Partner and I are having trouble deciding how to continue after this 1D. We're willing to play entirely different methods here from what we play over 1M, so that's not an issue. Any suggestions, or pointers to notes dealing with a similar 1D? Thanks, Alex
  13. 2D, easy. Not particularly close to X followed by 2D.
  14. "Stolen bid" doubles at all levels after we open 1NT and they overcall?
  15. This is a 3d over 1s overcall ala Lawrence, so what the heck does pards 3d delayed bid show? Pard cannot have a decent 8 hcp with a decent D suit that is a 2d bid. xxx x KQxxxx xxx may be a 3D bid after 1H-(1S) for Lawrence, but for many (most?) people, 3D on this auction would be fit-showing, with diamonds and hearts... And many (most?) would require more than a decent 8HCP and a decent suit for a 2D free bid...
