  1. We have kept some of the asking bids in our precision system but it seems most precision pairs have given them up. We use transfer like positives. Accepting the positive implies a fit and asks AK controls like the old CAB. Following this start we can make side suit asks or trump suit asks, like the old epsilons and gammas. After a transfer positve, accept, control ask answer, we use 2NT as a Jacoby 2NT like bid using Larry Cohen's alternative Jacoby answers. This works well. These bids don't come up often but when they do, they can be helpful. If I was playing with someone who hadn't played a big club before, I wouldn't bother with any asking bids.
  2. How about this? 1D-2NT 3C single suited diamond hand 3D asks 3H club shortness 3S heart shortness 3NT spade shortness 3D (54)(31) 3H Asks 3S 31(54) 3NT 13(54) 3H 1255 3S 2155 3NT to play 4m perhaps pure minor hands with nothing in the majors 4M 56 major minor 2-suiter
  3. Partner and I are considering playing 2NT forcing after our 11-15 1D Opener. Our 1NT opener is 14-16. Were figuring 3NT is 17-19 and 2NT 13-16 or 20-21. All the NT responses deny a 5-card major. What are the best responses over a forcing 2NT? We were playing 3C both minors min, 3M both minors with major shortness max, 4C highly invitational both minors, 4D highly invitational single suiter, and 4M as 6D and a 5-card major. Any one have a structure they'd like to share? It seems like we should be able to better than this. Perhaps some relays could be used to untangle various distributional shapes.
  4. I am looking for another pair for a team match this Friday, September 13, at 8PM central. If you are interested please PM me your and your partner's bbo handles.
  5. We had two tables and I think everyone had a great time. If you'd be interested in participating in a set team game in the future, PM me and I'll email you when we are setting up our next game.
  6. Looking for interested pairs Adv or better for a fun Friday evening team game tomorrow, Friday, September 5th. I will work diligently to assemble two teams but if not possible, we will play four handed vs the BBO field. Please PM me if you and partner are interested.
  7. Some people use 4♠ as a quantitative raise with 4-4 in the minors and a useful doubleton. If your 4NT is vacant you could differentiate the weak doubletons.
  8. I'd also be interested in playing some Standard Modern Precision online. My bbo handle is jmc.
  9. I actually like playing 1c-2M as a 6-card major with 3-6 points. This takes pressure off the 1C-1D-whatever-2M bids by responder. I could be persuaded to play the 1c-2h,2s differently if it had a big advantage. Right now we put the 4441 hands into the 1c-3c,3d bids ala Precision Today.
  10. What do they use the 2s bid for?
  11. Anyone know the reasoning for 1c-2d 8-10 as opposed to 8-11? Any practical differences? I'm considering playing the 2D as 8-11 and keeping my 1c-2NT as 12-14. Then I'll insert the 15+ into the 1c-1H spades or 15+ response. Alternatively, I could keep 2D as 8-10 and make 1c-2nt 11-13 with 1H as spades or 14+. Thoughts? Concerned how much changing the range for 2NT will affect my slam auctions. The 2NT over 1c sometimes feels like a slam killer.
  12. Partner and I have been playing regular transfer positives for a long time but he has recently decided he wants to try the Meckwelian 1C-2D as 8-10 balanced. We would then play 1H as a spade poositive, 1S as a heart positive, 1NT as a club positive, and 2C as a diamond positive. I am wondering if any of you could share ideas or notes for this style, especially after the 1C-2D 8-10 positive. We currently use 1C-2NT as 12-14. Where should we load the 15+ balanced? Any notable disadvantages in this style? Our old 1C-2D as a heart positive really makes it hard for the big club hand to show a minor suit as we begin at the 3 level and burn a lot space. Any ideas or thoughts appreciated. I tried to find old threads but searching specifically for this was a challenge.
  13. Partner canceled on me, so if you have a team you want to field, go for it! I am looking for a replacement but would be happy to take my turn another week.

I'v e always enjoyed your posts Phil. Thanks for all you do here and at bridgewinners.
  15. I play that 1x-1S-1NT-2H is game forcing with both majors and can be only 54. This allows you to NOT show the other major in the auction 1x-1M-1Nt-2x checkback or new minor forcing. Concealing whether or not the 1NT opener has a 4-card major is a nice benefit. Of course, this means my 1x-2H bids can have more shape. I thought this was the "normal" way to play this but Phil is a better resource for expert standard than I am.
  16. After a Challenge match completes it would be nice if there was some direction as to where to find the board results. I ended up looking in recent hands but it took me a few days to realize the challenges were treated like tourneys and I could easily see the results summarized in My BBO / Tournaments. Perhaps a link or some indication in the Challenges "room" about where the results are. The notice of completion of the match could also have this information. I've been using BBO for years. A new player to BBO might have a harder time. Thanks for the Challenge matches. This is the main feature I missed when using Fun Bridge. I suspect I will spend WAY more time at BBO now. Can I get to challenges on my mobile app?
  17. I have been having this same problem. It is quite irritating and I'd love a fix other than re-sizing the BBO window by hand.
  18. In a partner's pet precision systems we play 2D as 11-15 any 4441 or 44(50). The frequency does increase and the negative inferences when it doesn't happen can be helpful. That being said I am not a fan. I think having the 2D guarantee D shortness makes it easier to stop low or blast game without leaking much information. Especially white vs. red its easy to have auctions like 2D p 4M where the fourth opponent is frozen out pretty effectively with no good options. I also prefer 2C to show 6+ clubs and that means my 2D is better as (43)15, 4405, or 4414.
  19. If I have two 15 table sections but only 24 Bridgemate IIs, can I use pick up slips for the tables I don't have Bridgemates? What would be the best way to run the game? I briefly looked at the Bridgemate user manual but didn't find this situation covered.
  20. If you look at an ACBL convention card on the left side under Simple Overcalls there is a section on responses. The boxes for advancer's new suit bids are Forcing, Non-forcing constructive, and Non-forcing. All three of these boxes are BLACK indicating no alert or announcement is required.
  21. 1D-1S-2H promises shortness somewhere & either a 3-card raise 14-15, or 4-card raise 12-13. Any of you play this method? What are the followups? Do you have a gadget for these hands after 1D-1H? This is in a precision system with a 14-16 NT, could be few as 2 one diamond opener, we open all 11's and rule of 20 hands. 1D-1M-2NT is a max 14-15 either 4-card support for M and shortness or 3-card support for the M and a 6-card diamond suit. 3C untangles with 3D showing six and 3H low shortness and 3S high shortness. 1D-1M-2M-2NT asks about strength and support. Anserws are in steps. min 3, max 3, min 4, max 4.
  22. Looking for 3 pairs to play a 24 board team game with partner and I from 1 PM central on Monday, September 9. (6PM GMT) Please private message me or post your and partner's BBO handles here. Partner and I are looking for some practice with players who won't disappear. We play a big club with a variable NT. We'd prefer experts but will happily take interested advanced opponents. Assume ACBL rules and alert procedures.
  23. I would like some practice bidding hands generated and then made into printable bidding sheets for my partner and I as well as .lin files to be used on BBO. I am lousy at doing this myself. I am too lazy to learn to program deal, etc. If you are good at this, I'd be happy to use you regularly. Anyone interested? My current needs are for 200 hands mixed together for practice bidding minor oriented hands that meet the following criteria: Opener-----a precision 1d opener 11-15 could be few as 2 diamonds less than 16 not a 14-16 balanced hand, for this sample balanced = no shortness or 6-card suit not a hand that would open 1M, a 5-card major is fine if also holding a 6-card minor not a hand with 6 or more clubs unless holding 7 diamonds :) not a hand that meets the criteria for a precision 2d bid that is 11-15 exactly, 4414, 4315, 3415, 4405 Responder 10+ hands that will bid 2C or 2D over a precision 1D. These may contain a 4 card Major if GF but not if invitational I have some specific hand categories I'd like but I'd rather PM more details. Shoot me a bid if your interested.
  24. [hv=pc=n&s=skjt8765hkdak32c2&n=s2ha432d5caqj8763]133|200[/hv] You and partner eventually arrive at 4♠. A heart is lead and you win in hand, play a club to the ace, play ace of hearts pitching a diamond, lead a diamond to hand, and ruff a diamond. You ruff a heart back to hand. What is the best play in spades at mps and at imps?
