  1. Frances recently referred to a light 2/1 responding style (9+ hcp), with 1M-2x-2M showing a minimum hand with 5+ cards. I'd like her and any others who play this style to describe it, and describe how and why they play it a) Is 1M-2m-3m forcing :) What hands qualify for 1M-2x-3M c) What are your rebids after 1D-2C d) What NT range do you play - is part of the reason to invite with 9 opposite what may be 15-17 balanced? e) How light do you typically open etc. I ask because I played something similar when I played very light openings. We would open with 10(9), and respond with 11, so we needed to be able to stop in 2M. We found this quite playable. When we switched to a EHAA/FN type system (5cM with 1X = 13+ unbal/14+ bal and a 10-13 NT), our 2/1 response structure remained the same, though we now do it on 9+, and FG with 11. This is probably not optimal for very sound openers, but we're used to it, and my pd doesn't like 1NT Forcing. Our rebids after 1M-2X show: a) 2M = 5+, NF, invitational strength (9-10) only  1S-2H-3H = 5+, NF, invitational strength only c) A rebid of a lower ranking suit (i.e. 1S-2C-2D) = forcing, any strength d) All other bids are GF 2/1 is the most common system where I play, but there are a number of Standard American players. Some of them (including some good players) play 1M-2x-2M as NF, with the "stop in 2M" rationale, since they no longer have 13 hcp opposite an 11 hcp response - more like 12(11) opposite 10/11. Comments? Peter
  2. The 2NT bid with 11 hcp opposite a reverse is interesting. I would interpret it as showing 6-7 hcp, and NF. Peter
  3. Hand A only. I don't like doubling, but with 4 hearts and 15 prime points I don't feel I can pass. With the other two, I'm happy to defend. Peter
  4. 6S. You know pd will get a heart ruff (I assume 5H showed the HK). Peter
  5. Pass. The opps have 8 or 9 hcp, and neither you nor your partner have a five card suit. Peter
  6. <misread auction, shouldn't post at night> Peter
  7. 3D. If Pd has 2 hearts, he should bid 3H. Peter
  8. "The other problem is what do you do after: 1D-1H-P-1S-P-?" This is what convinced me of 1NT, although the hand looks like 1H. I think this one is very close. Peter
  9. 5C, because of opps 4M, and our possible game, and the vulnerability. 4C at this seat and vulnerability is "shut up, partner, I've got crap". If it was a better bid, I would bid 4C. Peter
  10. "I've had a string of large penalties recently from people coming in over a mini NT on rubbish." The best reason to play the mini - the opps go wild :P Peter
  11. How can I stop the sounds when playing on the newest version? Peter
  12. Although 3NT is a slight overbid - 2NT would have been better - 4C was atrocious - all the blame to South. Peter
  13. Bad, terrible, EVIL! Of course, I NEVER overbid myself ;) Peter
  14. "Besides I doubt they could be found guilty beyond reasonable doubt." The "reasonable doubt" test only applies in criminal cases. Most civil cases use preponderance of evidence, which is basically 51% likelihood. Being banned from bridge (or the appeal of it, more likely) would be a civil matter. I agree strongly with Richard's post. Peter
  15. "In true basic Acol 1S-2D-2NT = 15-16 balanced, not 15+ and is non-forcing. Welcome to the land of truly light 2/1s." I gather Rule of 19 openings are common in ACOL. Are the 9+ 2/1 responses forcing, and if so what do you rebid with a 5224 10 count in the sequence 1S-2D-? Do you have a rebid that is for minimum openers only? Peter
  16. 3NT. The hand is halfway between 2NT and 3NT, and when in doubt... Peter
  17. 1. With his 8-card-major, north did not open. Terrible call, but some will do this. 2. East made a reverse with his 3-card-suit. The best lie - no problem. 3. West passed his pd's reverse. Terrible - the worst call of a bizarre auction. 4. North balanced after Wast passed his pd's reverse Bad judgment. 5. South did not double. This is fine - I would have passed too. Was this auction chemically enhanced? ;) Peter
  18. "Pass Everything can be wrong and I'm not strong enough. Let's try to beat 3♥ !" Agree. Peter
  19. Pass (forcing). I don't like my options, let pd be wrong :) Peter
  20. Pass. You are too weak to act in the direct seat, even with a 6-4. Peter
  21. "Yes, at least if he is 12-14." Why? This is suicide - you have three small trumps and a takeout double has been passed for penalty - why on earth would you sit still for a sure bad outcome? 1S may get thumped, but it's unlikely to be worse than 1C, and may well be better, or not doubled, or taken out by the opps. Peter
