  1. Close between 3S and pass. I bid 3S. At matchpoints I would pass. Peter
  2. I don't understand. We've had clear signals for over thirty years that we need to do something about oil consumption, and we have done very little. What does this have to do with Jefferson? Peter
  3. Yes it will, but the fact that we're being poky about it creates unnnecessary destruction. Peter
  4. 1. I would have opened 4S, but in the context of your question, I would blame North more, as South has a rotten hand despite the diamonds. 4S seems clear. 2. 4S by North is *bold*, even by my standards at favorable, but I don't mind it, as long as pd won't be shocked. Obviously pd was shocked B) Peter
  5. Doesn't that just make you want to slit your wrists? Peter
  6. Oil prices caused the 70s to be a poor decade for economic growth and inflation. It's possible that they could do the same again. I think the most likely scenario is a wide Middle East conflict, made vastly more probabale by the invasion of Iraq. If we can dodge that bullet, we are still faced with falling off an oil cliff at some point, but that's probably 30-50 years in the future, and hopefully the world economy will react to the price signals, and make the necessary changes in energy practices. We should be doing that now, but it appears that we are a very stupid and shortsighted species.... Peter
  7. I read on rgb a while back that Cohen has said that the main reason they split is that Bergen was constantly coming up with new conventions he wanted to play, and that Cohen wanted to play a simple (by expert standards) bidding systems. Peter
  8. 2S, I understand pass, but it's not my style. Peter
  9. Indeed they do. I play 1M-3M as preemptive, 1M-2NT as limit plus, jump shifts as invitational or weak. Peter
  10. 1S seems clear, I wonder what I'm missing. If pd rebids 1NT I bid 3C. Peter
  11. I bid 5H at IMPs, I would pass at MPs. Peter
  12. 3C, the hand is n't good enough for 3H, and it isn't close. East may be sitting there with a misfit and a bunch of points, waiting for me to stick my neck out. Peter
  13. Pass. 4333, 10 hcp, 33 in the unbid suits, I wouldn't bid at any vulnerability or scoring method. Peter
  14. 2 clubs. This shows (usually) 5 diamonds and at least 4 clubs, which is what you have. Peter
  15. I disagree strongly. 3D is a game try in diamonds, in my partnerships. Peter
  16. This is condescending nonsense. FWIW, I live 60 miles from 9/11, and I knew people killed in it. Hemingway described courage as grace under pressure. Think about it. Jefferrson said "A society that will trade a little liberty for a little order will lose both, and deserve neither". Do you think they were into video games? Peter
  17. 3S. Pd has declined the invitation by bidding 3D. Peter
  18. Ken, I understand what you are saying, but what percentage of players who "play sayc" do you think really play it, or at least 98% of it? I'd say under 20%, perhaps way under 20%. "SAYC" has come to mean: 1. 5 card majors (but not necessarily having 13 hcp). 2. 15-17 NT 3. Stayman, major suit transfers, and Blackwood) 4. 2/1 forcing for one round (but not necessarily promising a rebid) That's about it. Is your experience different? Peter
  19. jt: Thanks for the suggestion, but I should have specified that I play ACBL GCC events, and the 2H/2S would have to be GF to be legal. Peter
  20. Playing Sandwich NT (4-4 or better in the unbid suits, less strength than a takeout double), this is easy. If not, 1S, 2D, and double aren't terrible, especially at this vulnerability, but I pass. The opps are unlimited, I'm not quite strong enough for a takeout double, and I may not get to show 2 suits without overstating my strength. Peter
