Yes, you are correct (in the ACBL) but in practice I've found that the 2NT call often is alerted.
-
Was the 2NT call alerted?

I just had to share this one that I just saw: "Canadian $795,000 supercar aims for high-end market". Hmmmmm, and I thought with that price point they'd be going after the low-end market for sure.

Yep, and once when I got pulled over for speeding the cop just gave me a warning. I didn't complain about that either. Anyway, I know our phylosophy on these things differ so there's not much sense in beating that dead horse. Thanks for the suggestions folks. Elianna, I tried your suggestion and it definitely works except when I set up a 5 table 4 round movement with 3 boards per round, the system thinks that board #3 is never played at table #2 and therefore there are two pairs that it won't allow me to input a score for. Any thoughts on overcoming that obstacle?

Face to face.

Hi all, I want to run a teaching game where the students play 12 boards. What I'd like to have happen is that each table starts with two boards on it and pairs play those two boards but then all tables play a pre-arranged board as their third board (ie all tables play an identical board simultaneously). We would then stop to discuss that hand that they'd just played. The first two boards and the players would then all move as a normal Mitchell movement and then we'd do it all over again, playing a total of 4 rounds of 3. Any thoughts on how to build this movement into the system?

Rise (??) in cheating recently

Or better yet, force them to read the entire global warming thread in the Watercooler. -
Thanks for your input folks - much appreciated. Jan I agree 100% with you on not wanting Units/Districts so post club results although, for the same reason, I also disagree with the idea of the ACBL posting them on their site. What they should do instead is offer clubs subdomains and provide an easy tool to maintain a club website. These two things are incredibly simple to do and would be huge for a lot of clubs that don't have the wherewithal to build/host their own site.

Hi all, I know several of you in North America are on the boards of your local ACBL Unit or District (and even if you're not you may have visited your local websites). Has anyone seen a website that's any good? I've recently joined my Unit's Board and I'm redesigning their site for them. I've only got it partially completed but I know it's going to be a big improvement. If you'd like to have a look it's at www.unit246.com/test. Please note that it isn't done so not all links are live and/or working properly. My District is now asking if I will do a new site for them so I'm hoping to get some inspiration. To go through all of the Unit/District websites would be rather time consuming so I'm hoping maybe some of you have seen something that looks decent. Thanks.

Yes, hundreds of them.

I think that the claim is that there are people that were flagged as friends who are no longer flagged as such and that there is no way that he accidentally changed how they were flagged.

Huh? The post isn't even six hours old.

Anyway, the lead is the ♥3. The declarer asks and is told that they lead 4th best. Do you play the ♥J hoping that the lead is from KQx3 or do you play low hoping that it's from K10x3 or Q10x3 and that East will pop the other honour? Are the two options even close? PS The ♣K is offside so you need to get this right. :)

In an NHL hockey game there are two on-ice referees, two linesman, two goal judges, video reviews done at the league office in Toronto and a Director of Officiating that reviews plays for possible disciplinary action against players. When me and my friends get together to play a pick-up game we make our own calls. There are of course many levels in between. I think the bridge club regular games are much closes to the latter than the former and that having any sort of formal appeal process is a little over the top. At my club I'm the head director and if a player has a concern about a ruling they all know that they can come to see me. I've been approached all of three times over the last four years that I've been doing this and on all three occasions the director was clearly correct. I'm not saying that our directors haven't made any mistakes but clearly our players are happy enough with them. I think when you set up all sorts of formal processes for these types of things you're really just asking people to complain more often.

Congrats Fred and team!!! It's well deserved, as the whole team played great throughout. I remember a couple of years ago a thread where it was suggested that the sponsor pair on this team was not as strong as some others and Fred was quick to disagree. Fred was obviously correct as Diamond/Platnick played some great bridge (IMHO).

So the acticle says a 400% increase in membership but they probably mean a 400% increase in their membership increase. So the membership is currently at 165K. If it went from 159K to 160K in 2008 then went from 160K to 165K in 2009 that would be a 400% inrease. Of course it also could have gone from 164400 to 164500 to 165000 and that would also be a 400% increase.

Ten Years After

I voted 2002 but it may have been 2001, I'm not too sure. -
Well I don't know about the rest of the world but they stop quite regularly here in Canada (and US too, we get their programming as well). It's been that way for at least 40 years.
-
I don't think this analogy holds water. Hockey has built in breaks just as much as basketball does (probably more so actually). When a hockey game is televised they will go to commercial generally after goals and icing calls. If there is too long between these events then they'll just stop for a TV timeout after an off-side or a penalty. Then of course there are the two intermissions as well. Another thing to think about is that Nascar generates huge ratings in the USA and they rarely stop the races for TV breaks. :(

I guess I didn't stop to think that the entire world doesn't play online poker. For those who aren't familiar with the term "sit and go", it's a tournament of a predetemined size and once that required number of people have signed up it starts.
-
I'd really love to see some tournaments run in a sit and go format instead of scheduled. This could work particularly well with Robot Duplicate and Robot Reward tourneys. You could have them fill to an optimal table count (for ACBL tourneys that could be whatever gets the payout for first up to the max) and then run. It would most likely give a significant lift in table count.

Patience isn't exactly my strongest virtue.

While playing my 12 boards the scores for each individual board update dynamically in the "My Results" tab. Also, my overall percantage is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen along with my position in the tournament. That's all great but once I've completed my 12th board the scores continue to update dynamically on the right side, and my total percentage continues to update but there's no longer any way that I can see my position unless it's somewhere that I haven't noticed.

Tim Hortons. Non-Canadians will most likely not understand this but this is a chain of coffee shops that is named after a former NHL player (who was a hall of famer and was tragically killed in a car accident back in the '70s). It's become a Canadian institution, they even have one on our military base in Afghanistan.
