This is a funny system that can be played after just reading this short description, it's a lot of fun so if you want to try it with your pd or with me from time to time take a peek. Opening bids: 1c = 0-10 balanced 1d = 0-10 unbalanced 1h = 11-16 balanced 1s = 11-16 unbalanced 1n = 17+ balanced 2c = 17+ unbalanced 2d = Any three suited hand 2h+ = Strange hands with shortage in the suit bid The first bid by responder is a step-response as in the opening bids: 1st step = 0-10 balanced, etc.... Then bidding is natural except that a 2nd bid in the cheapest suit that is not nt is a "boredom" signal indicating that youy are bored and will pass your pd's next bid. If you want to try some examples you are welcome, results are usually horrible on paper and good or very fun at the table.

I guess that language is the problem in most cases, some players mya not be alerting because they just can't explain what the bid is for their lack of english. Maybe some pop-up tool to enter a description of the bid that can be universally understood is what we need, something that could then be read in the screen as 4+s, unbal 11-14 may have a longer minor, 3-h Maybe a simple interface like: ♠ [combo with <.>,=] [combo with 1..7] same for hearts same for diamonds same for clubs HCP: From [combo] to [combo] [] balanced [] unbalanced [] forcing [] not forcing [] INV+ [] GF [] signoff [] Splinter [] relay Other: [................................................................] I'm not sure, maybe it helps maybe it just will scare players from alerting....

I agree that it is wise to preempt on sound values when Vul but if you always do that you become a predictable player and don't you love to play against a predictable player? So undiscipline from time to time is needed to make life harder for your oppos. If pd always bid 4c with 7 cards we need to talk but if he once from time to time decides to bid a wild 4x preempt on 7 cards then it is ok to me. I like some randomness in style it's just to easy to count the hand or know what to do against very disciplined players. "Colors are for kids" M.Bergen

I agree with Richard, why do we have to penalize pd for opening 4c with 7 cards? I fully agree with 6c if we are down one then bad luck, but 6nt is just too risky. If pd has 7 clubs chances of making 6c are really a lot better than making 6nt.

We've been preparing some new toys for experimentation, this one is called Moscito reloaded. It can be used as an adapter to any moscito variation. Moscito reloaded. * A multi pass adapter to Moscito relays (or your favorite relay system) * Open any 8+ hand and many 4-7 hands. * Precise definition of FG situations vrs INV situations. * Balanced hands are 1 point wide, so no invitational sequences are requiered. * Fun. Opening bids: Pass: 13-16 or 0-7 any or Balanced 17-18 1c: 8-12 4+h can be balanced or any three suiter 1d: 8-12 4+s unbalanced 1h: Any 17+ or a strange hand. 1s: 8-12 without a 4M and unbalanced 1n: 11-12 balanced any 2c: 8-12 both majors 2d: 4-7 weak 2 with 6M 2h/2s: 4-7 weak 2 with 5 cards not 6 2n: Good preempt in a minor. 3c/3d: Ugly preempts 3h/3s: Good preempts 3n: Minors Responses: a) Pass (13-16 or 0-7 or 17-18 balanced) pass = If you want to pass with 0-4 HCP go ahead! Rookie's Report after 1st tournament
luis replied to McBruce's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Gerardo, Being BBO an international site I think that it is wise to adopt WBF regulations more than ACBL regulations unless BBO as an organization wants to take a different point of view (just my opinion). Based on this I'd really like to emphasize that is not fair to ask players playing non-american systems to alert more than players playing standard systems. There's a lot of MI due to the lack of an alert by SAYC players that is not being discussed just because most players don't bother if a pair playing SAYC doesn't alert their bids. In general all systemic bids should be alerted and failure to alert a systemic bid should result in a procedural penalty of some kind. Adjusting the score is only appropiate if the MI caused damage to the NO pair as the rules say. A campaign to teach and instruct BBO players how and when to alert would be more effective than trying to regularize what bids must be laerted in PC or precision or other systems. Remember SAYC players fail to alert as much as other players and they are not under the hood. Example: Playing weak NT 1c-1h;2h Now this 2h bid is alertable since it is either 15-17 or an unbalanced hand, can't be balanced 12-14. Who alerts? Absolutely nobody. Can this inflict damage? Yes, a lot. How many times were you asked to rule about this bid not being alerted? How many times were you asked to rule about a polish auction? Either we stablish rules for all players to alert what they have to or we learn to be tolerant and call the director when there is damage due to MI not when they fail to alert and you get a bad result. -
What can we do.... what can we do..... STOP THIS, PLEASE STOP THIS! POLISH PLAYERS ARE NOT EVIL REPEAT: POLISH PLAYERS ARE NOT EVIL Can we post such a message in the lobby or something? I wonder if the ACBL requieres their players to take a course on witch-hunting before giving them the honor to pay the ACBL a fee. So you do accept a multi 2d that can be weak in a major or strong or a three suiter or britney spears but you want to ban a 2d that can be any weak 5-5 including a major? What is the #### difference? Now please explain me what is the difference between the "ACBL legal" multi 2d and Wilkosz 2d despite the later being invented by a non american player.... I'm also interested in why are you so interested in banning systems and so? Don't you have a local club where a group of old players who by coincidence teach SAYC to beginners have banned everything but SAYC? Would you like to go to Poland and find SAYC banned ? I'm sorry if this was too strong but I'm just incredibly amazed by the wave of posts against Polish clubbers. If you can't win against them is because they play better than you not because of their system. And if it is because of their system then what? Do you want to ban it so you can win? I don't get it. I don't get it.

Misho sometimes you are just too friendly :-) How can you thank your pd for bidding first 1 spade and then 4 spades on board 2. If he was in a tactical manouver for whatever reason then no problem but if he really pretended to have those bids something is really wrong.... :-) Besides my 6c and then all pass answers I do think I ought to have a conversation with pd after the session, we can't have two lunatics on the same table.
-
This is what happens when you have to preempt holding half the deck :-) 2NT is ok, with all my respect if you don't open this hand 2nt is just because you know the result.... What are you doing open 1m and then jump to 2nt showing 18-19 can be if you decide to downgrade your hand. So you went down in 3NT, next board.

Rookie's Report after 1st tournament
luis replied to McBruce's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
If you don't know when to compete you should study the contested auction with a professional coach or by yourself if you feel confident or you can't afford a teacher. First of all if you think that they don't alert on purpose to confuse you then you are accusing them of cheating please don't do that without clear evidence. Second a PP of 3 imps or a 1% is enough to make them aware they should be alerting their bids, why would they want to lose 1% or 3 imps each time they miss an alert? Adjusting the score is a complete nonsense because there was no damage, it is against the rules to adjust the rules just because you don't like what happened there must be miss information AND damage. Finally if you think that Polish club is a destructive system you are very wrong you have no idea of what a destructive system can do to your poor approach to competetitive bidding. PC is one of the less agressive systems in play today, what will you do against Moscito or TOSR or T-Rex ? Call a lawyer? -
1c-1nt showing 4+ clubs what do you think?
luis replied to luis's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
No, I was mentioning 1c-1nt as a balanced hand with 4/5 clubs (no 4 card major) examples: 3-3-3-4 or 3-2-4-4 or 3-3-2-5 or 2-3-4-4 Then 1c-1d;1x-1n denies 4 clubs and shows 4/5 diamonds. Ranges as in natural bidding 6-10 HCP or 7-10 or what you agree with your pd for 1m-1N -
DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVENT'T ANSWERED -MAJOR SPOILERS- :-) SOLUTIONS: Thanks for posting, we got quick answers this time. 1) If you passed you get a normal average minus score about 40%, if you bid 4s you are -300 for a shared top and a really good board. Besides a big smile from your pd and a really nasty look by opps. And yes they get nuts and you get a top in the next board too. I don't think they can now bid a slam after 1n-3n unless they get really obfuscated. At my table I did bid 4s, and LHO produced the only double dummy lead for -500 fortunately he forgot about thatthe h8 was higer than the 2 later in the play and I escaped for -300 and my devilish top. 2) The h4 holds them to 10 tricks other leads give time for declarer to make 11 tricks in comfort. If you lead a heart you get a very good result. I did lead the h4 (2nd/4th) at the table. I think the lead is almost automatic but they field wasn't on the same wavelength maybe because it was a weakish field. 3) We should have invited to cope with the strong no-trumpers getting to game in this deal. Pd has a normal good 9 counter so most pairs were in 3nt that makes. I decided not to invite and then my LHO commited suicide by deciding the hand belonged to them when the smoke cleared I was writing +1100 in the traveler. Anyway I think that the right move is to invite because of field-strategy factors and I didn't do it. 4) If you invite pd flies to game with his good 19 HCP and you go down like a stone. At the table we showed unusual discipline I refrained from opening 2nt with my 19 counter and my pd just signed off in 3h, the result was the only score in the NS column everybody going down 1 or 2 or more in 4h or 3nt. 5) You can't fight against success, 4sp was a good move atracting the opponents to a "we have to double them" game, pd bid 5c and played there for down 3 and a super-top. They are cold for 5h and many pairs were -800 or -1100 in 4 spades doubled. Yes your pd did open 2s with just five spades remember he was "invulnerable". So if you did like 4s and now you bid 5c you get an excellent result if not you get a good result unless you bid 4s and stand the double that would have been a bottom. BTW: 5c can't be lead directing if you were to play 4sx why would you reopen with 5c to play 5s? If your pd bids 5s you have to talk with him seriously. So how are we doing? 65% now that we don't need it (blerp!) and the finals are starting in just some days. We won't see opponents flaming themselves and normal bids or leads scoring tops so the next quiz can be more difficult and the results can be not so happy. See you in the next quiz!

Recently I've seen some pairs playing that 1c-1nt promised 4/5 clubs, so 1c-1d can be bid with 4 diamonds. What do you think of this treatment? Advantages? Disadvantages?
-
If you are playing MPs all 3NTs should be to play :-) Even the wrong ones, even the ones that shouldn't be to play..... OTOH I've seen a 3nt bid that wasn't to play when my pd rescued 2nt doubled to 3nt :-) Ok Ok I WILL pick a minor.....

I find this one tougher in standard
luis replied to Antoine Fourrière's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Richard, I think Paul played at least 3 or 4 hands very nicely but in this one is there any other line of play for a good player ? :-) The hand looked as a construction for moscito since you can reach 5c when natural bidders would have a problem to stay out of 3nt, on other hands moscito bidders may went one off in 5m when natural bidders steal a 3nt contract on the lead. You never know. Inquiry's points are fair, 5d is as bad as 3nt but that was an accident due to a problem with an alert, an upside-down world, the scientists misunderstood and alert by the naturalists :-)) I don't think the play of this rather ugly contract is important. I still think the hand looks like a construction :-). -

luis replied to Antoine Fourrière's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Yes yes, Marston and Sartaj got to 5d only because they had an acident with an alert. They might have played 5c. The real advatnage of the relay system appears if you compare 3nt to 5c, 5d was just what happened at the table. -

luis replied to Antoine Fourrière's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Many times with this kind of hand you'd better bid 3NT and hope for the best , if you show your heart weakness you can end up in a hopeless minor suit game. Sometimes the opps cards are reversed and while a player can lead a heart from K98 he may not. This hand looked like a construction for relay playes where a typical 1n-3n fails and the opening leader has the long hearts to lead the suit. Maybe the BBO computer is a scientist she delat this hand just to give us a swing :-) -
Ok, we did 55% in the first session (Quiz 1) and we did an unforgetable 73% in session 2, no quiz for session 2 since it was seeing opponents commit suicide one after the other at my table. Now in this quiz you will be playing the last classificatory session, so relax and enjoy the quiz you are already in the final with a 40% session. Problem 1: Nobody vul QJTxxxx, JTxx, x, x 1NT - p - 3NT - ? Do you pass or sacrifice to 4s? Problem 2: T762, 543, T64, K64 The opponents bid 1NT-3NT, your lead? Problem 3: K8,Q73,A98,AQ973 Playing weak NT you open 1c, pd bids 1NT 7-10 balanced. Do you invite? Problem 4: 842, QJ7642, J62, 9 Pd opens 1c, you bid 1h, pd rebids 2NT (18-19) now you can a) Bid 3c to signoff in 3h :) Invite to 4h with 3h directly c) Bid 3nt d) Pass 2nt e) Bid a game forcing 3d asking for heart support What is your plan? Problem 5: Not vul vrs Vul T2, A9, 3, KJT98643 Your pd opens 2s, RHO doubles, you bid 4s LHO doubles and gets back to you, do you agree with 4s? Do you pass or auto-rescue yourself to 5c? If you did well in this quiz you will be ready for the 1st session of the big final where the field will be really strong. Good luck!
-
I'm sure almost everybody will answer "yes why not", what about 5422 hands with both minors or a 5m and 4M? Do you open 1nt when you have one/both doubletons protected or always?
-
1. Kxx Axx AKxx ATx, red v. white (P) 4C (4S) ? your plan? Seems like I have 12 tricks. 8c + 2d + 1h+ 1s. 6c. If they defend to 6s I double. 2. KQxx JTx KJx ATx, all red (1C) Dbl (1H) 1S (4H) P (P) 4S (P) P (Dbl) P (5H) ? Pass I've said enough with my dbl. 3. Qxx Qx Txx Axxxx, all red (1S) 2H (P) P (3D) 3H (4S) ? Pass 4. x AQ Kxxx QJT8xx, white vs ?? (1H) 2C (P) 3C (3S) ? Pass 5. K Txxx KJT9x Qxx, all white (1C) P (1S) P (1NT) P (2C) P (P) 2D (3C) 3D (3S) P (4C) ? Pass

What I can't understand is how can players sit down to play without even botheing to agree a system with his pd.... I've been told to play "normal" "standard" "natural" "bridge" "whatever" "doesn't matter" "?" "no english" "hi pd" And I don't have a CC for any of those systems. I agree with Inquiry, please put what systems you can play in your profile so at least players can agree to play a system you know.

Rookie's Report after 1st tournament
luis replied to McBruce's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Even if 1h was systemically showing 2 cards and 12-14 and that wasn't alerted the infraction is not enought to adjust the score. Because there was no damage. NS clearly showed that they were only interested in a partscore when south reopened with 1nt after refusing to bid 2 times. North wasn't interested in showing his suit even after knowing the opener had a weak NT and responder was weak. Over 1s North can surely bid 2h and South can either bid game invite or pass depending on judgement. Adjusting is too much a prize for NS. Ben: You can' adjust the score if there was not damage you can impose a procedure penalty on EW and I agree that would have been correct. Maybe a 3imp pp is ok for the lack of alert (MI). I'd have ruled the result to stand (no damage) and imposed a 3 imp PP on EW for not alerting 1h and I'd have also told them please to alert all his bids after a 1c opening to prevent future problems. -
Rookie's Report after 1st tournament
luis replied to McBruce's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
There was MI due to the lack of alert but there was no damage, I disagree in this aspect. North and south clearly showed that they were not interested in bidding game during the auction. South failed to bid over 1c and over 1d, over a polish 1c opening south has an easy takeout double or 1h bid. North then failed to bid a weak 2h over 1d, then over 1h south didn't bid 1nt nor doubled. North pased again over 1s. South reopened with 1nt and north bid only 2h. They wouldn't have bid game even with the correct alerts. There's no evidence at all to assume that NS were damaged due to the lack of alert of the 1h bid. Did south ask about 1h? He knows that 1c is multi so if he doesn't ask it is logical to assume that he knew that 1h over 1d showed the weak nt. Did he ask what would east bid with a weak nt and 2-3-4-4 ? No. He failed to protect his own side by not asking and they both failed to bid properly. Now they can't pretend to win the hand because they missed an alert. -
Rookie's Report after 1st tournament
luis replied to McBruce's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
The adjustement is egregious, the fact that 1h was bid on only 3 cards is just a coincidence had it been bid with 4 cards you wouldn't have adjusted. So anytime a SAYC player misses a game against a polish club auction you will adjust the score.... It's really sad.... -
This was posted to RGB and I found it amazing. Not vul vrs vul pass - pass You have: AT9xx, x, Axxxx, xx what do you bid? If you guess what I would have bid you can win something :-)
