For what it's worth, we play semi-forcing 1NT, so 2♣ would show 4+ in our system. That left me from bidding 2♣. I didn't foresee that possibility as an option, so glad I included "Other" in the poll (yet no one has voted for it). I chose 1♠ rebid 2NT. I asked one of our opponents (it was a friendly game on BBO), who said it was a tough hand and he'd choose 1NT. I thought that was an interesting choice, so included that in the polls. Partner had: ♠J4 ♥JT854 ♦J5 ♣A974 We played in 4♥ (the wrong way up) and went one off when partner misguessed diamonds (which was quite understand since opening leader underlead his Ace at trick 1).

Congratulations to Roger, Jeremy, Owen, and Kevin (and even to the npc) and also to the other participants. Good luck in the event!

Inserting Color Suit Symbols in Word
Echognome replied to Echognome's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Tim, I think you can get the colors by using the Method 1 approach I list above and assigned your Alt keys to run the macros. That being said, I'm not sure if you can assign an Alt key or if it has to be a control key, which isn't as nice, since you won't want to replace your meanings for control C, Control D, Control H, and Control S! I think I used Ctrl-Alt-C, etc, but that's more keystrokes. The autocorrect way is really much simpler. I have not used the automatic TOC generator from Word. Well, I have for work, but someone has already built it by the time I look at it. -
Inserting Color Suit Symbols in Word

Jan - My work recently switched over to 2007, but I have resisted as much as I can. In June, Office 2010 will come out and from what I've heard on the beta, it will be much better than 2007. As for your particular problem, I'm not sure why the suit symbols aren't working. I believe the font I use for the card symbols is Symbol, not Times New Roman. I don't know if that will help you. Good luck. -
Inserting Color Suit Symbols in Word
Echognome replied to Echognome's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Great. Got it to work. Thanks. So to summarize for those that haven't done this. I did the following (easy) steps using Wayne's tips and it doesn't require any macros at all. Note that this was using Microsoft Word 2003. The steps may be different using another version of Word. 1. Go to the Insert menu and select Symbol.. 2. Insert a Club, Diamond, Heart, and Spade symbol into your document and close the dialog box. 3. Highlight your club symbol. Select the font color you would like. I chose green, but you can leave as black if you like. While the symbol is highlighted, go to the Tools menu and select AutoCorrect Options... 4. Under the Replace box, I typed !c and the With box was already populated with my green club symbol. Hit the Add button. 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the diamond, heart, and spade symbols. Voila. Anytime you type !c, !d, !h, or !s you will have the colored symbol inserted into your document. -
Inserting Color Suit Symbols in Word
Echognome replied to Echognome's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Wayne, For some reason I'm having difficulty getting my AutoCorrect to do that. I can have it set to formatted text for the symbol, but I don't know how to change the text color. Any hints? -
I am trying to update some system notes and trying to insert color suit symbols in my document. I can think of two ways to do this efficiently and wondered what other people have done. Method 1 - Record a Macro for inserting each suit symbol and assign a hotkey to each macro. Here's the code I wrote for this method: Sub InsertClub() Selection.Font.Color = wdColorGreen Selection.InsertSymbol Font:="Symbol", CharacterNumber:=-3929, Unicode:=True Selection.Font.Color = wdColorAutomatic End Sub Sub InsertDiamond() Selection.Font.Color = wdColorOrange Selection.InsertSymbol Font:="Symbol", CharacterNumber:=-3928, Unicode:=True Selection.Font.Color = wdColorAutomatic End Sub Sub InsertHeart() Selection.Font.Color = wdColorRed Selection.InsertSymbol Font:="Symbol", CharacterNumber:=-3927, Unicode:=True Selection.Font.Color = wdColorAutomatic End Sub Sub InsertSpade() Selection.Font.Color = wdColorBlack Selection.InsertSymbol Font:="Symbol", CharacterNumber:=-3926, Unicode:=True Selection.Font.Color = wdColorAutomatic End Sub Method 2 - Use the AutoCorrect to insert the suit symbols and then write a macro to go through the entire document and replace all suit symbols with the same symbol but with the respective colors. The advantage of this method is you can use !c, !d, !h, and !s to edit the suit symbols in the document and then do one sweep at the end to attach the colors. The disadvantage is that it doesn't seem to work as I expect it to. Some of the symbols don't get converted and I don't understand why. Anyway, here is the code I have (mainly from recording and replacing code). Sub SuitColors() Selection.Find.ClearFormatting Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting With Selection.Find .Text = ChrW(9827) .Replacement.Text = ChrW(9827) .Replacement.Font.Color = wdColorGreen End With Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll Selection.Find.ClearFormatting Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting With Selection.Find .Text = ChrW(9830) .Replacement.Text = ChrW(9830) .Replacement.Font.Color = wdColorOrange End With Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll Selection.Find.ClearFormatting Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting With Selection.Find .Text = ChrW(9829) .Replacement.Text = ChrW(9829) .Replacement.Font.Color = wdColorRed End With Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll Selection.Find.ClearFormatting Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting With Selection.Find .Text = ChrW(9824) .Replacement.Text = ChrW(9824) .Replacement.Font.Color = wdColorAutomatic End With Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll End Sub Any thoughts from other people? What has been successful for you? Any other methods that may work better?

What's that double?

West passed over 3C? lol Maybe West thought 2♠ was a fit jump? Who knows? -

I thought about it for awhile, but eventually came out with 3♣. Our teammates made a part-score in diamonds, so was a win. -

We both felt max for our actions, but thought the bidding was reasonable. Double dummy says the only making game is 3NT by south. I don't know how to get there or whether I want to be there single dummy.

(don't think that was best). I then lead the ♥J, which wasn't covered and won the trick. I crossed to a high club and played ♥A (pitching a diamond) and ruffed a heart felling the K. I then crossed to another high club (Q falling) and was able to make the rest of the tricks. Turns out I didn't need to make any overtricks. At the other table, my teammate doubled the diamond splinter and the opponents chose to defend 5♦X and only take it 3 off.

I played AK of spades and a winning club (a mistake I think, but the thought was hoping to cross ruff). Then I ruffed a spade and lead a heart to the J and A. East gave West a club ruff, but alas it was with a master trump. 10 tricks.

Diamond to K, ♣J switch. I was declarer at table 1 and laid down the ♥A. 10 tricks. At table 2, declarer played the ♥J to A and then hooked on the way back. She remarked that East must hold the ♥Q for his double. *shrug*

What's that double?

For what it's worth, there was no alert and looking at the hand record, I cannot tell which way he meant it as he was 6-4. -

Why it may be rational to spend more than you currently earn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_income_hypothesis Who bears the burden of credit card costs?* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_incidence *At least in my opinion the added price of the credit card transaction is like a tax on goods, except levied by the credit card company. I argue this is the case since the vast majority of places do not have a difference in pricing by form of payment.

Agree with 3♣, but don't forget the "Gazilli 2♣ wtp?"

I would pass. Definitely possible I'm being stolen from.
