  1. I'm with you there. Between counting winners, quick tricks, losers etc I'd never make an opening bid. It at the moment I'm staring at <19% in today's daylong - I might have to start playing Snap. No doubt there's a Snap Forum where I can get my ideas corrected as well . Amazing!! There actually is!
  2. The effect of changes in reputation and the extent to which other people will do business with you has a dramatic effect on the income of people like Murdoch. Murdoch's base salary is (in USD) $7,100, or less than $200 dollars a week. His total 'compensation' - I think it's the rest of us that ought to be compensated - is $43,589,554 from Twenty-first Century Fox. Effectively the only money these people make is from you consuming their tawdry wares. Stop doing that and they'll be on skid row. In the case of the Trump family, the term 'base' salary carries a special meaning. The Trump name does not appear on this site - I guess because it's a Private company - but no doubt it will be similar. Refuse to do business with them and watch their fortunes plummet. Being President (even Past) comes with a lot of perks. If he is 're'-impeached, and convicted, he loses not just the ability to run again, but all the accoutrements that come with the position, Money, secret service protection everything. If everyone refuses to do business with any company that associates themselves with him, his family etc watch how fast he shrivels to nothing. This is already happening. I'm doing my bit I refuse to watch television or read any newspaper or watch any entertainment connected with or sponsored by the Murdoch Family. If you read the History of the Murdoch's you will discover that Trumps are just the latest in a long line of Frankensteins going back to WWI when he tried to oust General John Monash. Cancel culture is just another term for not voting for or paying them. It's the only tool that the citizenry has. Mandela and Gandhi would call it 'civil disobedience' You will not die if you don't watch the Simpsons. I wish they would just f f f fade away, then we could return to normality. But they won't if people keep associating with them. Trump and his family watched while the Capitol was stormed - with glee.
  3. I've put the full Traveller for this hand in the Spoiler now.
  4. The latest trend on TikTok and twitter is American teens giving congressional leaders advice on what to do to keep safe if crazed armed gun-toting strangers come rampaging through their building. They are full of helpful advice such as 'pretend to be dead" and "run in ZigZags". This advice is intended as an alternative to enacting useful gun control legislation. https://www.buzzfeed...ots-gun-control eg "I don't feel sorry for congress at all. Oh, I'm sorry, did you have to hide under your desk because of guns? Wah wah wah. I've only had to do that six times since kindergarten. School is terrifying. Maybe now they'll pass gun reform" Alisa Valdés-Rodríguez, M.S. (@AlisaValdesRod1)
  5. The hand below is given to 26 humans playing against robots to bid and play. The call comes round to you. What do you do? Why? What is the score that achieves closest to 50% for the group playing it? What method do you use to evaluate your hand? This comes from yesterdays Daylong number 1 Board 5.[hv=pc=n&s=skhak5dkj76c76543&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=pp]133|200[/hv] What happened:
  6. The beauty of robot Bridge is that every player suffers and enjoys the same partner. The reason that successful partners are successful is not that each one of them is a 'good' player, but because together they understand their understandings better than other pairs. Robots make errors - so do you. It's the nature of a game where all information is not available. The good thing about robots is that they make the same moves in the same situation for everyone. My question is: Why play with robots for $40? I get grumpy parting with $0.39, but when I do badly I know it's because other players understood their partner better than me. As an aside the EW robots had a slam. https://dds.bridgewebs.com/bsol2/ddummy.htm?club=chrome_ext&file=https://mirgo2.co.uk/bridgesolver/uploads/5ffb4f4ccb5a82.30869150.pbn
  7. This is a great idea. What OP is suggesting is that it is possible to register with a partner who is not online and for that partner to come in later and attach their registration. This system is implemented successfully on other sites. On Stepbridge for example I can register days in advance and my partner then registers at leisure. The registration is only finally accepted by the system when both players have registered. At present this doesn't work on BB because you cannot go to a partnership desk and register with your partners name as a 'placeholder' so that they can come in later and register. At the moment you both must be online at the same time. For players in the online community, this can be quite bothersome. Implementing the change would likely increase the number of participants. OP is unlikely to be suggesting that they spray invites to multiple people and hope for a pickup partner. Another option that is available elsewhere is to register without a partner and the Director then allocates you one 5 minutes prior to start. Again money to be made. And enjoyment to be had. Simple as A,B and C. Well, one of A or B will just have to watch.
  8. Haha - like a joke except for that little bit at. the end that's supposed make you laugh.
  9. In that case, I defer to the humble opinions of the Water cooler legal scholars Mr Z and Mr B. Is the address of your Chambers 1060 W Addison by any chance?
  10. And in real life apparently. A man recently pitched a tent outside the city walls and roused his followers to attack the gates. Clearly, they missed the nuances of his words. This happens all the time to people with an inadequate understanding of how things are supposed to work. But there are limits.
  11. Your friend may have checked the 'invisible box' knowingly or unknowingly when they logged in. If they have then you won't be able to see them - it's like having an invisible friend. Or they could be on the Casual server and you are on the Tournament server.
  12. Whether or not SCOTUS has considered something or not is a red herring. What you are doing is raising a straw man argument for the purposes of saying something that you believe about pillowsky (whoever that is). All pilowsky said Mr Bayer was that innocent people cannot be pardoned. This is a self-evident statement. All that you need to know is that you are guilty until proven innocent. You do not have to be a constitutional lawyer. Since you claim to know exactly what SCOTUS has and hasn't ruled upon, it sounds like you are the one that sounds like you know better. Pilowsky is much more circumspect - not sure about pillowsky. Where's Sheldon - he'll know for sure. He knows everything. Although you seem to be limping into third place after that guy who's upset about Alderaan.
  13. Sounds to me like the poppycocker has created quite a kerfuffle. A few weeks after I started playing, someone made a bid of 2♣ and their partner proudly alerted the call as "Game Force". Concrete thinker that I was I immediately bid over it, comfortable in the knowledge that they would be forced to bid over me and all would be right in the world. You can imagine how that story ended after I was doubled. There is a legal term called the MacNaughton rule (Policeman at your elbow rule). To paraphrase: Would you do the same thing if there was a policeman at your elbow? What happened to me was that when someone said Forcing, I thought that it was a protocol, not a guideline. What universal beginners quickly learn is that nothing is Universal and that in Bridge it is rare (but not unheard of) to be punished for doing anything - no matter how extreme. I have complained about racism antisemitism and misogyny in Bridge clubs, nobody cares. Fail to alert an artificial bid on the other hand and the seas part and the Heavens open. Things that happen at the Bridge table if translated into real-life Nash equilibrium situations that could get you sent to prison or some other kind of secure facility are generally considered very mild infractions. That includes rudeness and pompous displays of antagonistic behaviour. The only thing by the way that IS universally acknowledge is that "A man in possession of a large fortune must surely be in need of a better player than he is for a partner". So, in a game like Bridge what possible heuristic value can the term 'semi-forcing' have? It isn't forcing, but even in Bridge Forcing isn't always forcing, so what is the point of having a term like semi-forcing? Neither expression conveys any useful meaning at all. Finally, I don't think is necessary to sound like Squire Western in order to be informative. I always think that people that do are either after money or ignorant. But I guess in that situation Sophia had no choice. Although to be honest, I think that many of the Bridge players that I meet at Clubs sound like they've just popped into life from the pages of a PG Wodehouse story. Thanks for the response Richard.
  14. The point is moot. No convictions will be rendered until after Jan 20. Anyway, even Trump cannot pardon (presumed) innocent people - especially those that he has just thrown under the bus. I don't even think God can do that.
  15. Dear Mr Universal Expert, , I'm reasonably sure that quite a few Bridge players are not Universal experts (I'd like to see experts agree on anything), but since you have chosen to self-classify yourself in this way, perhaps you could explain in a little more detail - and a little less outrage - exactly what you mean. It seems to me that your rather pithy explanation that expertly omits useful detail is pretty similar in substance to what I said - you can get Mr Kok to help you if you're having trouble - he seems to approve of your comment. Trivialising is not quite the same as answering. No matter how much pleasure you derive from it. I know I got a good laugh though: poppycock indeed!
  16. The term semi-forcing is used to describe a bid that is forcing if the responder is NOT a passed hand, but which can be passed if the responder is a passed hand. Capturing all of that information into one brief expression: "semi-forcing" is why it is confusing terminology. In both cases, it is natural. In the first case, responder describes a limited hand where they are happy to play in NT but do not know the 'limit' of openers hand. In this (first) case, I understand NT to mean: Yes, I have points to tell you about but not enough to make a game-forcing 2/1 bid. Also, I do not have 3 Trumps (literally, no Trumps). You can then rebid the Trumps if you have 6+ or bid a 3+ card minor instead. The second case is different. Opener knows that the responder does not have an opening hand or better, so they can pass with a balanced hand. This is how I've come to understand GIB 2/1 - I'd be grateful if someone could let me know if this is wrong. The German word for semi- is halb meaning half, or perhaps "I am bidding 1NT because I have a hand that is rather flat and does not have an 8-card fit with 5 Trumps but maybe with 6 or more." 'Halb' can also mean assist or help so that the 1NT trump responder can help, but they aren't sure by how much. The penchant/predilection/tendency of English speakers to use words with Latin or Greek roots often causes more trouble than it's worth. At least in my opinion, or should say, that's what I believe - so to speak.
  17. The last part is apparently not correct. The reps impeach (indict): not a problem. They send the indictment to the Senate where he gets a (very) speedy trial. In the incredibly unlikely event that a 2/3 majority vote to convict him at that trial (this has never happened), then and only then do they proceed to determine what the penalty is. A simple majority is enough to decide the penalty, BUT they will not even have that until 22 January when Georgia is required to certify the results of the Senate election. Even if they did by some miracle, decide that the penalty ought to be never being allowed to hold public office again - vanishingly unlikely - like being dealt 13 spades unlikely, THEN he would not be permitted to hold office again. This punishment has been meted out to Judges, Never Presidents. In the end, a person was murdered by the riot that Trump incited. A massive all-in FBI investigation is underway. Let's see how citizen Trump gets on in Fifth Avenue with his now infamous claim about shooting people after the 20th.
  18. True, life can be very hard at times. I play on another site where it's 'touch move'. You misclick on a card and feel like you've stepped on a landmine (well sort of), knowing that eventually you have to release it and, like Major Tom, there's nothing you can do.
  19. It has been suggested that when Dummy comes down it is a good idea to stop and pause to think before you play. Even if the card in Dummy is a singleton. So I switched the setting to NOT. And that's where it's staying. Your ideas about temporal dysphoria notwithstanding. If it causes you actual pain or discomfort when people think before they act, then you might need to choose a different sport: Curling is quite good fun. In New Zealand, they televise sheepdog trials on Prime Time TV, but for that sport, you need 6 sheep and a dog. It's amazing to watch how the dog guides the sheep around the course. If one of the sheep leaves the group the dog comes and has a chat with it. It's quite a lot like Bridge in that way.
  20. From the home page, look at the line that says 'Featured Areas'. Just below that, click on 'ACBL World'. At the bottom of that page is a tab that says 'Add your ACBL number'. Click on that. Here, you can add or amend your number. Or, click the link on this page that says 'join the ACBL' if you are not a member. Now you will need to keep your wallet warm.
  21. Here is an image of a harmless non-violent patriot visiting his elected officials so that he can calmly explain his grievances. I hope you understand the friendly symbology on his T-shirt, and it's meaning. http://i.imgur.com/1WiV4LX.png
  22. I think that you should read the posts a little more carefully, and let David speak for himself. Of course, that's just my opinion.
  23. Has anyone read Scoop - Evelyn Waugh? Loosely based on a Murdoch like character...
  24. LOL - I'm not sure if Kayleigh knows that the earth is round (well, an oblate spheroid anyway)
  25. I'm pretty sure that's what I said, but David seems to be suggesting something more nuanced. I'm wondering what he means. I agree with your comment - and Larry fwiw. :)
