  1. It's also helpful for changing the names of players to help protect the innocent. Unfortunately, the Handviewer "container" cannot (correct me if I'm wrong here) be used to upload an external file into your BBO account. Using the lin file format allows you to acquire any hand from anywhere and then load it onto a teaching table to work out the best line. WITHIN BBO simply click on the three white lines where the hand is (not the other three white lines) - choose "export" and then "save deal as". now you can collect your hand into a file in your deal archive. This is 'handy' for deals that get lost from your history (Daylongs for example). I can now make random hands in google sheets (randarray function etc), pack them into a .lin file container and then load them into BBO. The first one allowed the EW bots to reach a Heart slam - very annoying. I don't know what sort of cryptography Google uses.
  2. There seem to be both "vaccine altruists" and "anti-vaxxer hesitants" out there in the real world. Neither of these positions is going to help bring the pandemic under control. Like rabbits and other disrupters of global ecosystems, viruses care nothing for borders, synthesised human emotions, or anything else. The concept of "this group first" or "women and children first" or "we must ensure our own supply first" or any other rationalisation that slows the rollout to every corner of the globe as quickly and efficiently as possible is simply King Canutism. Smallpox was not eradicated by vaccinating health care workers first, or Americans or Australians or Europeans. There is now so much vaccine available that it needs to be rolled out as quickly as possible to the closest arms. If it isn't done this way, then viral evolution will mock both the altruists and the hesitators. On the "supply-side", the Australian government has made it difficult for regular GP's to provide the vaccine. A website with information about how and when one can get vaccinated was set up. Since I fall into Category 1B, I can get a shot on Monday. In Australia, vaccination is free. But when I contacted the closest clinic (not my actual GP), they demanded that I register as a patient. It turns out that some GP's are insisting (illegally) that people pay for a consult before they get the shot. Hopefully, our useless government this egregious and avaricious behaviour will soon be stamped out. I have to say that my gorge rose a few centimetres (inches for the Americans and Brits) when I discovered that a convoy of cars carried Murdoch to a vaccination clinic that held its doors open for him. His eager craft wheeled and sped along to prevent him from slipping the surly bonds of earth, enabling him to reach out and touch his 90th Birthday. Still I think it is a good thing that everyone gets the jab - even those that promote anti-vaxxer sentiment in their global news network.
  3. Its fairly straightforward. The hand sits in a 'container' The front of the container is the board number of a normal 'round' Here are 12 examples: As you can see, the Container specifies the Board number, dealer and the vulnerability. qx|o1|md|3 is the front. |rh||ah|Board 1|sv|0|pg|| is the back The hands are - in order, South, West and North separated by commas. eg SQ9HAKT2DAT3CJT53 is the South hand. You have to include an S, H,D,C in each hand even if there are no cards in that suit in the hand. SJTHQJ93DJ72CK764 is West and is SA8754H654DK85CA2 North. BBO autocompletes East when you load it into your account. The Bridge solver program will read the lin file. Obviously, you can create any hand you want with this method, load it into a 'container', Save it into a text file and change the name to anything.lin You can then import your hand into BBO through the -account - deal archive area and replay it. If you copy and paste the 12 random hands below you will be able to save them as described above. I hope there aren't any that are too exciting. I haven't tried them. qx|o1|md|3SQ9HAKT2DAT3CJT53,SJTHQJ93DJ72CK764,SA8754H654DK85CA2|rh||ah|Board 1|sv|0|pg|| qx|o2|md|4SJT42H872DT853CKT,SKQ8765HAKQD2CQJ4,SHT963DKJ764C7632|rh||ah|Board 2|sv|n|pg|| qx|o3|md|1SQ953HJ84D6CQ9843,S64HA96DT2CAKJ652,ST82HT5DAKJ743CT7|rh||ah|Board 3|sv|e|pg|| qx|o4|md|2SKT64H742DJ84CKQ5,S83HAKJ8DKQ6CA932,SAQJ9HT93D53CJ876|rh||ah|Board 4|sv|b|pg|| qx|o5|md|3SAT732HAQ75DQJ8C4,SQJ5HKJ86D76CQJ62,SK94HT92DA94CAK73|rh||ah|Board 5|sv|n|pg|| qx|o6|md|4S6HKQ985DKQ96C985,ST92HA742DJ752CQ3,SAKJ843HJTDT3CAT6|rh||ah|Board 6|sv|e|pg|| qx|o7|md|1SQT98HQJ9543DK3CQ,SAJ53HADJ76CK8543,SK4HKT6DAQ98CT976|rh||ah|Board 7|sv|b|pg|| qx|o8|md|2SQ6H6D8653CKQJ872,SAK53HK8DAKTCA643,S87HAQJ9432DQ94CT|rh||ah|Board 8|sv|0|pg|| qx|o9|md|3S9HAJT76DQ62CAQ63,SKT6H84DK743C9852,SQ8543HQ2DJ85CKT7|rh||ah|Board 9|sv|e|pg|| qx|o10|md|4SKJHQ75DQ974CAK53,ST643HAT2DAJ86CQ8,SAQ875H9643DKTCJ9|rh||ah|Board 10|sv|b|pg|| qx|o11|md|1SKJ92H93DJT65CJ72,S6HQT4DK932CAQT43,SQT7543HKJDAQ8C85|rh||ah|Board 11|sv|0|pg|| qx|o12|md|2SA653HQ82D95CKJ76,SKT42HJ973DAKQC84,SQJ87HT6D872CAQ95|rh||ah|Board 12|sv|n|pg||
  4. Or, if you're a vegetarian, the three white lines in the blue box.
  5. That's what I was wondering, But the beefy comestible on my phone and computer are both consistently 4 layered.
  6. Yesterday after being booted from BBO a couple of times, I noticed that the half-eaten double-beef whopper sitting on its side was flickering (in the Magenta box). Does this estimate the quality of the connection to the BBO Server?
  7. A useful report on the rarity of adverse reactions. The ABC is an (fiercely) independent government-funded news service in Australia (Australian Broadcasting Commission), https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-18/adverse-reactions-australia-covid-vaccine-astrazeneca/13252870
  8. I hope you didn't inhale Ken! And remember - "Don't solicit for your sister - that's not nice - unless you get a fair percentage of her price." I seem to recall that Lehrer said that he gave up political satire when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I can't imagine what he would be thinking now.
  9. There is a confirmation bias about finesses when playing with robots. It turns out that the likelihood of a finesse working or failing is the same as when playing with people. The computer does not surreptitiously move the King or Queen while you are watching the children. How 'good' are the robots? According to the EBU they have an approximate rank of "Q" with an average of 58.6%. If you look at the results from yesterdays Zenith Daylong which attracted 1568 competitors of wildly varying skill levels in a NOT best-hand tournament, 58.6% means that they are playing better than about 90% of entrants. A score of 50% puts you at 780/1560. The relationship between Rank and percentage is only linear between ~45 and ~55. Above and below these points, the curve flattens. It's very hard to score 100% or 0% - I don't think I've ever seen it. All the same, You are still playing against 'people'. You just never meet them because they play the same hand as you against three robots - some of the robots play better than others. I think that it might be a worthwhile amendment to designate which type of 'robot' you are playing against. Perhaps they could be called "GoodRobot" and "BadRobot", or "Robot" and "WillRobinson".
  10. I always knew that 4G was bad for my brain: Now it looks like 5G will be worse. btw, judging by their State affiliations it seems that the appropriate appellation is "Confederates". As that famous Harvard mathematician Tom Lehrer wrote a few years ago. I wanna go back to Dixie Take me back to dear ol' Dixie That's the only li'l ol' place for li'l ol' me Ol' times there are not forgotten Whuppin' slaves and sellin' cotton And waitin' for the Robert E. Lee (It was never there on time) I'll go back to the Swanee Where pellagra makes you scrawny And the Honeysuckle clutters up the vine I really am a-fixin' To go home and start a-mixin' Down below that Mason-Dixon line Oh, poll tax, how I love ya, how I love ya My dear old poll tax Won'tcha come with me to Alabammy Back to the arms of my dear ol' Mammy Her cookin's lousy and her hands are clammy But what the hell, it's home Yes, for paradise the Southland is my nominee Jes' give me a ham hock and a grit of hominy I wanna go back to Dixie I wanna be a dixie pixie And eat cornpone 'til it's comin' outta my ears I wanna talk with Southern gentlemen And put my white sheet on again I ain't seen one good lynchin' in years The land of the boll weevil Where the laws are medieval Is callin' me to come and nevermore roam I wanna go back to the Southland That "y'all" and "shet-ma-mouth" land Be it ever so decadent There's no place like home https://archive.org/details/lehrer_i-wanna-go-back-to-dixieReleased into the public domain by Tom Lehrer in 2020.Addeddate 2020-10-20 20:52:20Identifier lehrer_i-wanna-go-back-to-dixieIdentifier-ark ark:/13960/t6c34dv4hOcr ABBYY FineReader 11.0 (Extended OCR)Ppi 300Scanner Internet Archive Python library 1.9.4
  11. Speaking of problems that are facing the world at the moment. I would guess that most of the people that write on this Forum have some scientific training. Certainly, the majority would have a background in one of the so-called STEM fields. Yesterday, Australia's new Chief Scientist recently gave a speech in Canberra. You can read the full text here: http://bit.ly/STEMaustralia The speech itself was in the main homely and anodyne. But the message that caught my ear as I listened to it were the four issues that Foley considers "Foundational" in science now. Presumably, these are the headline issues that will maintain our national security, keep us safe from disease, solve world hunger and prevent climate change from destroying the world. Before you look, try to imagine what our new Chief Scientist believes are the most critical issues facing Australia in March 2021.
  12. [hv=pc=n&s=stha7dqt93cqt9532&n=sakqj74hj8542dj2c&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=3c3sppp]266|200| THIS is a lead. I suppose that in Bridge, as in life, one has to expect the unexpected and be prepared. (http://bit.ly/NotaKnife). From an EBU game. West bid 3♣, and my partner overcalled 3♠. East passed. You can imagine that I was a little surprised; the odds of a 7600 distribution are about 18/1 (0.0056%). That's real-world data from a site where I make deals. According to Bill Butler (http://durangobill.c...rSuitStats.html), the actual result is (If I have 7, the probability of someone else having 6 is (possible combinations: 4,272,048), P=0.000526. Bill also plays the piano! https://www.youtube....h?v=r4Tho0nyHZk. East then led the ♦K. The most interesting part of this hand is that apart from (or perhaps because of) its shapeliness, the contract can be defeated, but only if East finds the 'killer lead'. What would that be? Why?[/hv] Clue The actual hand The makeable and optimal contracts
  13. Am in Sydney - just lost connection here too, but was able to get back after ~1 min. at about 0905 AEST And again at 1140 - playing Daylong - East refuse to play after opening lead - then locked out. I think this may have affected the Bots too - they just gave me a couple of over-tricks.
  14. First, it wasn't a 'thing'. Then there was endless horrifying statistics from around the world and desperate hope for a vaccine. Then - being the sort of Forum that it is, endless Discussions about numbers, statistics, quality of data and whether or not the vaccines - when they came would be effective. And now, to be honest - my worst fear: so much for 'trust the science'. This comes from the USA - is there something cultural happening or are their other barriers, or is it the culmination of years of conspiracy theories.
  15. Come to think of it, maybe the kibitzers are in the black bar but you can't see them because the font is black, and they're a bit shy.
  16. It may not be a good idea, having names flickering on and off may be distracting. btw, what do you have against 'black bars'? Black is my favourite colour.
  17. It's like masterpoints, Tom. At first, you can't get any even though they look like they're available. Later you start to get some. Shortly afterwards you stop worrying and play in the Free tournaments.
  18. Fair enough , Although I suppose if you found a bed bug in your shoe, THAT would be unexpected! If you solve the problem then you will have fixed the "lady bug". http://i.imgur.com/yddKTpg.png
  19. Thanks for that. The Double-dummy is provided in the spoiler. It only makes 5NT - if defended properly. It was played in a club so the defence was a bit patchy.
  20. A woman in Texas was asked to leave a Bank because she refused to wear a mask. The police were called and she was arrested. Mind you, remember the days when you couldn't enter a bank if you were wearing a mask... She assaulted the policeman and complained that her human rights were being violated. Seriously? Some people just have a tiny amount of self-entitlement. http://bit.ly/TxsWmnArrst
  21. Interesting, are the results normally distributed or was there any systematic improvement.
  22. Ty, was wondering. Btw, what is an expected bug? A March fly perhaps?
  23. On the other hand, the "vote post down" symbol is purely aspirational. So if you need therapy click it as often as you want - nothing happens. Rarely, you will find some people with the "vote post up" feature disabled.
