Here's a step-by-step showing how to use double dummy on BBO and Chrome. http://bit.ly/HowToDoubleDummy To get the full benefit of double-dummy you need a chrome extension - see description above. Double dummy analysis will show you where you went wrong or 'mis-guessed'. The Chrome extension will explain why you got the score you got.

This depends on your definition of democracy. I've lived and worked all over the world. I was more uncomfortable in the USA than I was in China. Australia, Sweden, Denmark, New Zealand - all have problems, but these are actual functioning democracies where people look after each other to a much greater extent than in the USA. In the USA, you have money, or you're dirt. Lose your job, and you have nothing. This doesn't happen in actual democracies where every member is valued. Bernie Saunders would be regarded as a member of the right-wing of the Australian Labour Party. Not the Chardonnay-swilling socialists and certainly not the 'loony left'. In the USA, he's not even a member of the Democrats - this is bizarre. No wonder, so many Americans refuse to accept that a short while ago, they ran concentration and extermination camps (reserves and plantations). The execrable treatment of straight non-white anglo Saxon protestants whose parents weren't born in the USA continues to this day.

Actually, the 'pausing' - it really does happen - is clearly completely random. GIB pauses during bidding and play in tournaments, challenges and casual. I think that there is a 'race' format where this doesn't happen but I can't recall which one. I've taken it as a valuable learning experience. Since the pausing by GIB is random and meaningless, I now ascribe absolutely no significance to pauses by human opps. This has dramatically enhanced my focus on working out where the cards are. Hopefully, I'll see a benefit from it! I used to 'infer' all kinds of things from breaks in tempo and pauses. Robot Bridge has shown me what a waste of time that is - so to speak.

The attitudes of Australians towards vaccination was studied recently and discussed on the Australian Broadcasting Commission (our free government-funded independent - slightly left-leaning - TV and Radio broadcaster). You can read the transcript here: https://ab.co/3qpb7EE For me, the most interesting feature was not the bias against vaccination amongst more conservative Australians - present but not as much as in other parts of the world - but the number of people willing to say that they thought that vaccination was "very safe". Less than half (44%) of the population were willing to say that COVID-19 vaccines were "very safe" compared with 35% who were only willing to accept that vaccination is "mostly safe". Several factors appear to contribute to this phenomenon. There exists in Australia a dislike for funding research of any kind. Sport yes. Medical research not so much. Ask the average Australian if they would like to give money to support curiosity-driven research (into anything) or if they want to support an athlete to go to the Olympics. It's a no-brainer. Consequently, there is a distrust of science which is fostered by politicians who play to the feelings of their constituents. Natural, but not helpful when science becomes essential to survival. Fear of injections maybe another. Oddly, these same people are entirely comfortable with driving cars, eating fatty food, smoking, and (my favourite neurotoxin) watching television. With respect to non-COVID vaccines, vaccine-related unwellness is common - although death is not. On the other hand, death resulting from the diseases that we commonly get immunised against is not as frequent as death (and yet to be determined) long-term sequelae as it is with COVID-19.

Sometimes. I find they pause when they have the King - it's a dead giveaway.

My understanding is that players may use only one system card per tournament and cannot alter their understandings during a tournament (unless they oppose a pair that uses highly unusual methods). If this is true, then it may be reasonable for the tournament organisers to prevent you from being able to make changes to your card once you have registered. I have no idea if the 'glitch' was intentional, but it seems to accord with this sentiment.

I wouldn't hold my breath. "Give Me A Child Until He Is 7 And I Will Show You The Man.” - Aristotle. In the academic world, people are wrong most of the time. It's expected. That's how new things are discovered. In the 'real world', the opposite is true. Everyone is right. All of the time. Nobody changes their mind. Intelligence isn't how much you know (or how fast your fingers are with Google), it's your preparedness to change your mind in the face of new information.

I don't watch TV any more. If I want a laugh I watch a bit of Fox news. The best comedy is delivered with a straight face. Here is a particularly stupid example where a Fox "news" commentator explains why it sucks to live in Denmark. This is a direct transcript - some of it is incoherent rambling which is why not all of it makes any sense, but you get the gist. If you want a good laugh google Regan Denmark. It's a little dated but in light of the events that followed, even more apposite.

Yesterday I was unable to do my banking because Akamai technology broke the internet. Fortunately, they had a backup computer - here is a rather prolix description of it. http://bit.ly/WaterComputer.

2 hearts or Negative double?
pilowsky replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Perhaps I have misunderstood, but after an overcall, I thought that it was usual to double to show a four-card major (as appropriate) or bid the five-card suit. In which case the same issue applies about whether to show the 4CM(via a double) or to bid the diamonds. In that sense, I thought the problem was essentially the same. -
2 hearts or Negative double?

Maybe the reason comes from "Better Bidding with Bergen: Vol.1" On page 1. he gives 10 examples of how to respond to an opening of 1♣: KQ65 Q874 QT42 8T743 K53 KQ974 89 A643 Q87654 96AK54 A6 K8743 938 Q953 AT87432 88 8654 A654 Q753654 863 AQ5 8743J954 Q6 87 AT654742 86 AK874 A65QT4 KJ5 J6543 Q9 He only suggests bidding 1♦ on 3 of these hands. This approach seems to fit well with the double of a 2 overcall = 4 of a major approach. Mikeh's example fits somewhere in between two of Bergen's examples. The difficulty that "bad players" - like me - face is comparing the quality of the Diamond suit with the quality of the four-card major in the context of the overall quality of the hand. No doubt "good players" have better tools and experience resulting in better decisions. -

How do you up and down vote simultaneously?

$300? - you don't even get a tiny totem pole for that.

"better" is a bit subjective. The statisticians that write on this forum go into a bit of a feeding frenzy every time this question comes up - it comes up randomly! Each player can change the settings on their browser to alter the fonts, so in that sense, the appearance of the cards may become "better". If you play at a teaching table, then you can import hands where one side of the table has a "better" shape or more HCP. This is useful for practising bidding/play of specific hand types. In every other case, the deals are 'unpredictable' but not truly random in a mathematical sense. There is an interesting discussion about the dealing program by the guy that made it (Hans van Staveren) on Bridgewinners - here's the link: https://bridgewinner...s-van-staveren/ They are sufficiently unpredictable that the average player has absolutely no chance of working out what the next deal might look like. But to answer your question (except for the teaching table) no, there is no God in the machine.

How old were you in 1968? Watch young Americans debate whether or not to be in Viet Nam. It's part of a series of youtube videos produced by documentary film-maker David Hoffman https://bit.ly/YoungDebate

On the plus side, at least we don't get penalised if we skip the post-tournament press conference. Something I've been guilty of more than once.
