  1. also 5% of men are red green colour blind for those of you that saw little miss sunshine, have a medical background, or know this stuff. Medical journals implemented the use of magenta instead of red many years ago because of this. How about that .
  2. Thank you for that response Zel. It is not exactly on the topic of linguistics. Nor is it on the topic of how GIB responds to bids which is what the post is about. Instead, it is a series of three off-topic interrogatories. Linguistically, this suggests that either you have failed to follow the purpose of the post or that you wish to make some other sort of point. One way that people usually make points when they communicate with each other is by making actual statements instead of asking questions. Give it a bash. Since we are having a discussion of linguistics, here is a legal test known as the 'Policeman at the elbow test'. Let's say you're driving home and a policeman pulls you over and asks you for identification. Would you respond by asking him: 1) Why did he bother to pull you over? 2) Is he aware that the man over there is driving very quickly? 3) Do I really have to go through all this palaver? I wouldn't, but maybe it works better in your jurisdiction.
  3. In a recent post elsewhere someone noted that the explanation provided by GIB during the bidding did not exactly correspond to what was in its hand. I gave this a bit of thought and decided that my response could be considered a little 'off-topic' so I have placed it here.
  4. I have been a (paying human) member for a few months now. It is excellent practice. My play has improved a lot. No they don't pay me. In fact you are playing against other humans in the same way that you would be if you participated in a daylong robot tournament. If you check your history after playing 8-12 hands, you will generally find that the other humans are also playing against robots. The big difference is that you get to play as defender more often, so I find that it is much better real-world practice. If anything, it would be great if the prime admin used this info to create a series of rolling tourneys or leader boards in the club. I haven't given great thought about how this would work. Just an idea 🙂
  5. I also thought that 1♦ pass 4NT would be asking for aces. To check, I went into Prime and set up a table. The first hand where the robot opened 1♦, I hovered over 4NT and this is what appeared. So at least in GIB 2/1, it is. Yes, I know that the hand is not suitable for the bid, its just to illustrate the point.... Hope that's Ok. Anyway, that's how the robots taught me.
  6. You led away from an Ace in a suit contract: So said the friendly playing Director. That's an absolute no-no, you must never do that. , So here's a hand from today where my robot friends (check GIB double-dummy) seem to 'think' they would defeat me if my Opps had led away from a supported Ace. It also seems to include a nice squeeze.
  7. My comment stands. The use of of terms such as 'horrendous' and it's 'tough to criticise non-experts' (in itself a barely veiled criticism) are not helpful. Anyway, if mikeh is feeling put out I'm sure he'll leap to his own defence.
  8. I agree with pescetom. It's possible that Mikeh's use of the term 'horrendous' is a little dramatic, If I don't follow the card and bid the same way each time, why should my partner trust me next time? 1♣ with a rebid of 1NT unless partner makes some other sort of forcing bid is the systemic opening in 2/1. In this case given that your partner has a great hand (19HCP) a call of 3NT would be reasonable. After all, 11+19 is 30. If my partner was stronger than a minimum they can bid more. My understanding of bridge is that one should not chop and change one's system in a whimsical way. This is a great example of how it helps to practice with robots. When I put the hand into the GIB double-dummy with that bidding sequence it gave me this: https://tinyurl.com/qmwn4cn Which apparently results in 3NT+2 following any lead. Maybe I missed something? I hope that is helpful.
  9. Yep, really heartbreaking, tragic, vexatious, sad, irritating etc etc etc sound like a whining desperate poodle
  10. I already paid by purchasing Prime, so yes and no, btw, I know that most of us are in there practising with robots, but it would be nice to have some way of communicating in the Prime club so as to set up an ad hoc Tourney at MP's or IMPS. At the moment its all rather sterile. Even a rolling Leader board or something might add a little spice. Perhaps on an opt-in basis? Over to you.
  11. In what sense are they free Barry? Where do I apply for my rebate?

  13. What sort of hand should you open 1NT with? When I was first told that I needed to have five of a major to bid a transfer when partner opened 1NT and that just 4 colourful cards in a suit weren't enough it seemed unreasonable. Eventually, it just didn't seem enough. What to do with all those odd hands that were the wrong shape or size? One solution seemed to be Benji Two's with a multi 2♦. And 2♣ for everything middling that was not 1NT or 2NT. Recently, I have been playing with some partners and robots, that don't respond to multi's and Benji's so I have switched to something a bit simpler. Just open 1NT on any hand between 14ish-19ish points no matter the shape. Here are three examples. So panel, tell me why . Just FYI, There are no restrictions on hand-shape in Australia for No Trump openings although Ops can ask if the hand might contain a 5CM. 1. From BBO $0.39 2020 02 14 daylong mp1 board. This hand starts 1NT with a singleton A♥ https://tinyurl.com/th86z7p 2. This one came up in practice on BBO prime (props to BBO - great value) The hand was bid and played by lots of us. Only the aptly named lucifer and I bid it this way and got the same result: Bidding is 1NT /2♣/2♥/3NT/// https://tinyurl.com/s7uevs4 3. From BBO $0.39 2020 02 16 daylong mp1 board 4. This hand starts 1NT with a singleton A♦ and a singleton 10♣ https://tinyurl.com/swcbrxw
  14. All 4 robot daylongs should appear free for you 3XMP and 1XIMP until your MPS exceed the limit. Or so it was for me. Is your ACBL number registered in BBO?
  15. I have a theory that nobody else believes. When playing at the club, and I get a hand from a deck that is clearly from a shiny new deck of cards, I often get a 'Goulash Hand'. My theory is that the new deck has not been shuffled properly before being put into the machine for 'random dealing'. Since I don't know how dealing machines work this could be rubbish, but it has happened more than once. Any thoughts from our panel?
  16. Thanks for that Maybe we should call it the "Dolphin" they can get by with half a brain.
  17. lol, so it did, thank you. Lucky for GIB robots don't abuse each other.
  18. I rely on the GIB double-dummy to tell me if a contract is makeable or not, and to find out where I mess up. Here is a hand that came up in an ACBL Daylong (ACBL MP 1 2020-02-11). Of course, I am posting it to show off. GIB assured me afterwards that it was 4♥-1, but at Trick 1 I was pretty sure there was a way to make. Here is the hand, and below, the link to the way I played it. Is there a crafty bridge term for the play, or was I just lucky? It seemed makeable to me. The lead from West is ♦K - GIB always underleads. As you will see from the link, according to Double-dummy this means the contract should be 4♥-1. 19. This may come as a surprise to you but nobody likes to die of preventable diseases such as Ebola, coronavirus and so forth. Please stop converting oxygen into carbon dioxide with arguments that make no scientific sense. The problem at hand has nothing to do with homosexuals Jews or left handed tennis players. Where do these red herrings come from?
  20. Here is what my friend David gozal. Professor of respiratory medicine just posted. https://photos.app.goo.gl/RC1Xddd3L2BJqjNX7 The problem with opinions is that they are not facts.
  21. When I asked the first person I met someone on BBO using UDCA if that was the University in Calfornia they attended, they replied: "Yes, the University for Dummies, California". I too have a lot of trouble with this method, so you have spurred my interest. Incorporating all my usual learning tools, I have come up with the following draft for comment and criticism. Here's some Diana Ross to help . Apologies to Jeff Tang if I have mangled the Bridgebum ideas. Thank you, if they are correct. UDCA https://i.imgur.com/lx6VeGn.png Well, my image attachment skills are broken today, so you'll have to click on the link...
