  6. I'm scared to death of a club return here. Partner has shown up with A-K of clubs. Declarer has everything else due to the range of the NT (there's a small chance of a J out there). Breaking a new suit is likely to not benefit us (us holding T-x of diamonds is a bummer). I'm going to try to get out of my own way. I am playing partner for 9xxx of spades because any other exit is probably giving up the contract. TS is my exit.
  7. 1. 2♥, a better than average overcall that I've seen. 2. At IMPs, 2♠. Can't afford to risk a misdefense and a -470/670 swing back to teammates, especially at Swiss. At MPs, 2♠ as well - you have probably one trump trick and no entries. Very anti-field if you pass here.

  9. Arend, The card is seen, but I have WPA encryption which seems to be trouble for this.
  10. I need some assistance for a new Ubuntu user (me) to configure my wireless correctly. I am using a NC4200 HP laptop with an Intel 2200BG wireless chipset. Everything else on the machine is working the way I expect it to, except the wireless. I have attempted to follow the directions, but admittedly they are very confusing to me since I'm not an UNIX guru at all. I'm a little frustrated right now, and getting the wireless to work correctly will allow me to start testing the software and clones thereof for work purposes. Anyone out there have a clue?

  13. Here's why I think bidding 2♠ on autopilot is not necessarily best. What will partner rebid on a minimum 5-x-3-x, balanced hand? If they rebid 2S as well to show this hand type, how can responder after rebidding 3D (which I like Adam's strong jump shift concept in a SAYC context) ever go right after opener rebids 3NT because they don't want to get past the ideal game and then go down because we're wide open in a suit while we've got a viable diamond suit we're sitting on to play? This is a reason why I don't play 2/1 without some understandings; there are people that swear up and down that 2♠ rebid here is ensuring six spades versus some that state that 2♠ here is showing a degree of lack thereof of values (likewise the 2NT rebid from opener being a catchall versus value showing). This construction is a problematic one for many that will land at 3NT instead of 6D.
  14. Hannie, I play 1S-2D-3D showing extras; in this construction I still raise regardless of style because if the fear that if I rebid 2S, I might be in the wrong strain when the auction ends.

  16. LHO is going to speak in spades here and we might be outgunned. If I say 4H, which most will say probably, 4S on my left, and back at me trying to decide whether to hit 5S or not. If we lack a club fit, our hand is pure enough for nearly 6H. I think you got to drive hard for game here and tell pard the spade situation in terms of a possible five level battle -> at least 3♠ splinter from me to get to 4H. Here in D.C. they'd open 1H over 1D; style thing.

In our transfer scheme over 2C, the followups are mostly natural - there isn't as yet parallelism with our 1C stuff (I think graft wise it would be tricky too - 1C-2C with us is a G/F with one or both minors, so 2C in essence preempts us from being able to show a heart hand if we used that module).   18. Adam, Can you try something for me.... Since BBOTV interacts with the cache of the browser, can you set your settings to have it check the page each and every time? That should form a solid foundation. Also, do you know offhand what your TCP receive stack is? I've found that if the ratio is too low, i.e. small stacks versus large bandwidth, the program will stall right out. (in my case, I have a customized DNS setup in my wireless and router config, but I run a 5000 Kbps window and it works nearly flawlessly off of a 15Mbps Cox connection) edit: Since Adam is on a Mac like I, you may need to set your MTU to a different number besides the default 1500 is it's lagging via Terminal with this command for AirPort ONLY -> $ sudo ifconfig en1 mtu <value> where the <value> is the number, in 8's, is placed. If on DSL the maximum you can run is 1492, and I'd recommend a lower number than that (maybe as low as a 1450), and it does NOT retain after a reboot. For Ethernet -> System Preferences, Network, Show, Built-in Ethernet, Configure, Manually (Advanced)...then you can set a number for that in factors of 8. These settings will retain themselves. To test (any O/S now) -> there are tools that can test the fragmentation of packets. The highest ones that doesn't fragment is your MTU desired setting.
  19. I have never been a fan of Walsh because of the inabililty to compete in diamonds, nor the ease of making a diamond invite with or without a major. The technical merits tho of xfer Walsh do seem to be reasonable - I have yet played it but have watched it enough to form a preliminary conclusion.
  20. I tend to discuss this with any comparable player with regards to fast/slow arrival - I'm a slow arrival person by preference. However around here in D.C., pretty common.
  21. The question should be, can we NOT afford to. There is a sizable reassessment going on with regards to risk. If we fail to bail out Countrywide, it would not take a lot of effort to jump to the conclusion that the repossessions will be based on some flimsy excuse like "eminent domain" and now the owners are out of a house. I do not think there is going to be a large correction here (and I have it on good authority - one of my coworkers is our chief economist and he does the TV rounds and such). I do tho think there is going to be a realignment of maybe a quarter or a half of trillion dollars in the U.S. market when it's all said and done. Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if credit unions will use this to pressure Congress even more to pass the CURIA piece of legislation, in concert with starting the North American phase of microlending and microcredit.
  22. I think having as few of byes possible is best for the entire event. One of the buggers about the USBF system are the 8 byes given. I strongly prefer 4 byes (or less - why not slog your way through it instead?) I like the curling method of playoffs myself (called the Page method if memory serves) - during my time in Nanaimo the Vancouver Bridge League used it and I thought it was quite rational and balanced. It allows for the number 1 team to go to the finals yet does allow for a high seeded team to lose a match and still recover to win the entire event.
  23. I bid 3NT due to Gerben's rationale, and the fact I have a slow playing hand. Pard can show a shape hand with a rebid of anything but pass.
  24. I bid game at IMPs; at MPs I make an invite - it's almost excusable at IMPs but at MPs the field may be giving up at +140.
