  1. Not wanting to go over that last post word by word, suffice to say: I don't agree with any of it ;) But it still makes a pleasant change to see someone sticking up for SAYC over WJ. :)
  2. By the way, I happen to think that opening 1NT on 4414 and (43)15 shapes is very effective. It's the (41)35s that worry me.
  3. I'm not surprised - I think you will find that your strong options are too infrequent. (Well, the frequency of the strong option is the same as MisIry, but relative to the weak option it's much lower.) Personally I really don't like using 2♠ to show both minors. The 2♠ opening should be treated with respect - "the best pre-empt in the pack" - and playing it as forcing makes it very feeble (the opponents are no longer threatened by you playing at the two level). If 2♦ and 2♥ are transfers then 2♠ should be something like Muiderberg.
  4. I don't get it - if someone says "I'm not claiming", then surely this satisfies the condition "he demonstrably did not intend to claim"? ;)
  5. Ah, but the break implies a 5-card club suit, and you can play in 3♣. Or indeed 3♦ occasionally - opener must have at least three of those too.
  6. Hey, this looks familiar. I think my partner held this hand, and doubled. I would probably have bid 4♥ instead.
  7. In WJ05 we usually open 1♦ on minimum balanced hands with four diamonds. But many other Polish systems seem to prefer 1♣ (sometimes even with 5♦-3-3-2). Does anyone have an opinion on which is better? It seems to me that if 1♦ promises an unbalanced hand, then this inference is very useful - much more useful than the fact that 1♣ tends to deny four diamonds in WJ05. But on the other hand, I suspect that when you do pick up a balanced hand with four diamonds, you will get better results if you are allowed to open this 1♦.
  8. Hey Mike, does this mean you've found a partner who plays this thing? :) It depends what style of T-Walsh you're playing - if completing the transfer shows 3-card support then rebidding 1NT on this hand is fine. But if you're forced to complete the transfer with any minimum balanced hand (so that 1NT = 17-20) then I'd agree you're better off rebidding clubs, because partner would pass after 1♣:1♥,1♠ with a lot of fairly poor spade suits. 1=4=3=5 hands are killers. I'd almost convinced myself that they were so rare that they weren't worth worrying about - but then someone goes and posts one to BBF! :D In the system I'm thinking about at the moment I have to open 1♣, and rebid 1NT over 1♠. But then responder has two ways to take out into 2♠: 2♥ = transfer to spades, but please break the transfer with a singleton. 2♠ = I want to play here even opposite a singleton.
  9. My experience of Gerber on this sort of auction is that if it goes 2NT:4♣,4♥ it's more likely that opener has forgotten the responses than that you're missing two aces.
  10. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the new way of adding conventions: it adds them as a whole, rather than a line at a time. That is, if you add Cappelletti, the only line where this appears in your file is "+Capp.bss". I suspect that the best way to solve the problem is to give the list of conventions an order, so that conventions which are high up on the list take precedence over ones which are lower down. And all conventions take precedence over lines which are explicit in the main file. I don't think it's practical to force all the conventions to be consistent, as there are too many ways in which you can create conflicts (e.g. by editing the files for the conventions). But perhaps the program ought to give a warning when two conventions are conflicting.
  11. I don't think this is right. E.g. 2♥= weak two in a major must be harder to defend against. In England next year we will have a sensible compromise - BSC pre-empts will be allowed at L4, as long as none of the options involves length in the suit bid. (So Wilkosz and the 2♥ multi will still be banned.) I like this idea - seems very logical.
  12. West gets the credit. But, as South, you can't ignore this type of swing completely. One effect of this sort of 1NT opening is that it often gives LHO a guess on opening lead. If they happen to guess right, then that's a bad hand for the 1NT opening, and you have to make sure there are enough good hands to make up for it.
  13. That's the point, of course - multi is an opening bid, whereas Capp is a defence to 1NT. Those are two completely different situations, and they require completely different defences, so there is no reason why the regulations should be the same. In fact, here in England, until the rules were changed we were allowed to play multi as an opening bid (at L3) but we weren't allowed multi as a defence to 1NT.
  14. Exactly. If you accept that there should be some regulation of artificial pre-empts, then there is no particular reason why multi should be allowed.
  15. This shouldn't really be an issue. In general, any defence is allowed against strong club, and this includes things like suction and crash where no particular suit is promised. If you play a strong club you will need to have agreements which cover those types of interference. In particular, you will have to have a defence which you use for any sufficiently nebulous 1NT overcall. So can use the same methods to counter a 1NT overcall which shows "any 13 cards".
  16. Well, I'm in complete agreement with Hrothgar on this. I personally don't have a problem with system regulations in general (except in major teams competitions), but I really dislike the idea of banning methods solely on the basis of some nebulous definition of "random" or "destructive". But anyway, it's funny that Justin should mention the EBU here ... Common sense prevails.
  17. To some extent I agree - it would be good to have the option of leaving it blank. But, why go through all the trouble of adding this sort of flexibility to the mandatory parts of the definition, when you can achieve maximum flexibility by putting everything in the "description"? Lack of replies in this topic makes me suspect I'm not going to win this one. But is there anyone out there who likes the current arrangement and can explain to me why it's better to have a fixed format? (Bonus points for sticking up for the "possible outcomes" ... )
  18. Actually you can't play it at L4 either. We're very lucky in England to have a Laws and Ethics Committee which (for the most part) makes lots of very sensible decisions. However the strong club regulations are a disaster area.
  19. I've made several posts on BBF complaining that TDs give averages when they shouldn't after a result has been obtained. And yet, here I agree with Ben: this is precisely the sort of situation where you can't get a result on the board. The fact that the sub proceded to play a few cards doesn't really count in my opinion - if he doesn't know what's going on then he's not playing real bridge. So in general in this sort of situation I think we should be assigning A++. This is the standard adjustment when a board cannot be played but neither pair is at fault. Having said that, if 3NT= would have been inevitable, then it seems reasonable to adjust to that instead. I don't think there's any right or wrong here, as the Laws don't have much to say about subs (for obvious reasons).
  20. I'd probably end up in 2♣ as well. But I think North is closer to a 3♣ bid than South is: from South's point of view the club suit is relatively poor, but from North's point of view it's likely to be running. I really dislike the idea of opening 1NT.
  21. Here is a hand from yesterday where I didn't have a clue what to do. Having just subbed into a tourney with a partner I didn't know, the opponents reached 4♠: [hv=d=e&w=sa532hqt82dq2ckj7&s=sj64hkj964dk97c52]266|200|Scoring: IMP W N E S -- -- p p 1♣ 1♦ 1♠ 2♦ 2♠ p 4♠ all pass[/hv] I led the ♦7 which partner won with the ace. Partner returned the ♦3 to my king. (Declarer followed with the 5 and the 6.) Now what? I have four suits to choose from and all of them look like they could go wrong in some way. So, what would be a good lead here? And what would be a really bad suit to lead?
  22. What a wonderful program FD is. I've been playing around with it a lot for the last week or so, and I now have about 50KB of system in FD format. It'll make a huge difference to our bridge playing once it is set up so that opponents can see the explanations. Right, now that I've said how wonderful it is ... I'm afraid that the more I use it, the more I wish that it had been set up differently. What follows is a plea for all the mandatory parts of the definitions to be dispensed with, leaving just the "description". There are a few specific problems that I have with each of the mandatory parts of the definition. But one general problem is that, because they appear every time, there is no distinction made between information which is important and information which is unimportant, or even very important. For example, if you were playing the Fantunes system, having "Forcing" appear in the top-left hand corner of your 1♥ opening isn't really good enough. What it needs to say is "FORCING <--- look". It follows that any important information ought to be repeated in the "description" anyway. (Also, when viewing the list of bids, you only see the "description".) Meanwhile, all the information which is unimportant or irrelevant just makes life harder for whoever it is trying to understand the explanation. Now let's look at each of the parts of the definition in turn. Disposition Sometimes the disposition nicely sums up what a bid means. For example, 1♠:2♦ playing 2/1 - this is great, I can write "forcing to game" and this does it nicely. Except, I'm going to repeat this information in the description anyway. Otherwise the reader might not realise that this is what really defines the bid. Sadly, a more common situation is that there is no disposition which is useful. You find yourself thinking, "Well, it just shows hearts, doesn't it? What shall I put? I suppose it's forcing, because my partner has promised a rebid. OK, I'll put that. But that's not very helpful, it's too obvious. The bid is just ... a description of the hand." This isn't solved by adding more dispositions. In fact, having lots of dispositions can be a bad thing, because it only works if everyone will understand what they mean. "Puppet" may be a perfect explanation, but it's no good if the reader isn't a bidding theorist. Minimum / maximum length For a start, this is too inflexible. For example, an opening bid in third seat might be "5+ cards, occasionally a good 4". Similarly, a natural bid might typically promise 4 cards, but occasionally be the best bid with a 3-card suit. In a large number of cases, the correct explantion is "natural", and the suit holding expected follows logically from that. Giving a specific number is therefore often misleading. The reader is unsure whether the length is an integral part of the agreement, or just a number decided on by the writer of the FD file because they are forced to do so. It's a nightmare trying to work out the suit lengths allowed in complex auctions, particularly for artificial bids. For example, in writing the file for Keri over NT, a lot of opener's artificial bids promise a suit length of "2-5". But sometimes a 5-card suit has been ruled out, so it changes to "2-4". And it's important to get these things right, because if the opponents play you for "2-4" when actually this is an error and you have 5, that is clear misinformation. But the suit lengths aren't actually part of the convention at all - it would be so much better if they were left out. And yet there are some artificial bids where the length promised is relevant. For example, we might have a 1♣ opening promising at least a doubleton. As usual, the problem is that we are forced to give lengths every time, so it's not clear to the reader when they are important. Possible outcomes I think enough has been said about this one before, but as a reminder: It makes no sense to people who don't use FD ... ... and isn't exactly clear to those that do. :P Denominations are usually removed from the "possible outcomes" because they are logically impossible, rather than because the call says so. It doesn't even deal properly with suit agreement, because it's possible to agree one suit and then go back to another. It takes a huge amount of work for the writer of the file. It provides a large amount of totally useless and very distracting information. I notice that I'm not the only person who gave up on trying to list the possible outcomes in the FD standard systems forum. Artificial This one is OK, if it is used as a flag like an alert. I don't have a problem with it. Except that it's quite easy to forget about, for some reason. Best wishes to anyone who actually read all that :)
  23. Agree. From my point of view, it would be great if there was a standard version of Moscito, as then it might be worthwhile trying to learn the complete system. However I'm less likely to want to do this if it would involve learning a new 1NT structure as well.
  24. It sounds like you don't have any agreement about whether 1NT can have a singletion. In which case, you shouldn't alert it. If you have discussed the possibility of a singleton with your partner, and you have agreed that it's sometimes OK, then you should alert it something like, "12-14, occasional singleton". Of course, you then need to make sure that you alert all your 1NT opening bids this way, including the ones that do not have a singleton. This will be much easier once FD gets going. As for whether you were "robbed", that depends on what the tournament rules were.
  25. Here is a more complete FD version of Keri (the book version). I'm not intending to add many other sequences to this, so if anyone else wants to do more work on it, you can go ahead without worrying that I'm doing the same thing. But I'll edit this post if I spot any mistakes in it. I've tried to include most of the sequences which are explicitly discussed in the book, but there are a lot of responses to slam tries which are left out. This is mainly because I can't see why anyone would want to play them in the way suggested. Klinger gives about six different sequences where 4♣ is a natural slam try, and they all have different (artificial) responses! I think this is a bit much. See p95 of the book for example, which really made me laugh. I'm sure it's great if it comes up, except that you'd never remember it. I'm afraid I can't be bothered with the "♣ ♦ ♥ ♠ NT Def" thing.
