  1. TY barmar for ur continued interest in this perplexing problem. Win10 originally set me up for UTC-11, which works correctly other than BBO. Just tried Eastern time (UTC-5)which set PC time much too early ...but only 5hrs earlier, strangely. Must be a glitch in Win10 or my version of BBO.
  2. My clock now reads 12:35PM, and am watching live Vugraph scheduled for 5:30
  3. Re-dled BBO Vugraph: Time still wrong...~8 hrs early now, seemingly only for Vugraph...??
  4. Ty for reply. Correct on my PC...how to set on BBO?
  5. Now on new PC. Set up for bbo same as old. All works, but time (eg for vugraph) is off...reads ~3 hrs earlier than it shd...as if I were in CA rather than in NJ. Rest of internet is fine, correct time. Why, and how to fix?
  6. Have bears active on my property...too warm here in NJ for them to hibernate properly this winter. But the only team formed, that I'm aware of, is mama and her twin cubs. :)
  7. :) Awww...Xena is dead...killed off by those same rascally astronomers who relegated Pluto to the dog-pound...sexy warrior princess replaced by discordant hellion, Eris. :) But whimpers from Pluto's cage are getting stronger...the astronomer-right (-left?) are instituting a recall...we may yet again hear him barking at the moon (dwarf planet?) from the far reaches of our solar system. ;) And my list of heavenly bodies...gone!!...wherever shall I find some kvetchy women to replace them with?...are there any? :) Am considering starting a new organization: ASPCP...American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Planets (or Pluto)
  8. :o Hear! Hear!...Roland said it all...most enjoyable VG presentation I've experienced...and that is saying a lot! But Roland must take five bows...one for each Walddk, including the one who gets to nap now and then. Nor should we forget Fred, Sheri and Uday who make this all possible.
  9. Well Mike, we have lost one, but are supposed to gain more. Pluto was a dog of a planet anyway (sorry about that :) ), but we shall gain Ceres, which I hope they don't bring too close. And in the far reaches, ah real beauties coming up!... Xena is there...has a number, but I prefer a different vision, one more easily remembered...and check the opportuniy to name other heavenly bodies. The list I'm preparing to submit includes Pamela (for a bright planet) and Tyra (for a dusky one). I shall really enjoy dreaming up more...but to whom should I make this submission?
  10. :) Rofl as I envision tiny clocks ticking away over the nameplate of each player. (Sorry about that :D ) ALL serious chess matches utilize clocks...thank god. In the dim past before clocks, a match could take days...an unscrupulous player, in trouble, could use 'sitzfleisch' to psyche/annoy his opponent. Playing 'by the clock' takes some experience, however...a GM learns to save time during the easy stages (eg in highly-analyzed openings) to use when he most needs it (eg complex mid-game calculations)...don't know how this would relate to bridge. This is the first I've been made aware that BBO is considering using clocks. Will this monitoring be only to add interest?...or are penalties to be inflicted?...and by whom? Sounds like a good idea to me...I think. But consider, some people simply cannot work under pressure (of tiny clocks hanging over their heads ) And this might lead to more partnership problems...I can see myself saying 'Play the damn ace!, tempus fidgets'...followed quickly by a DIRECTOR call from opps. All in all, it's an interesting concept...I look forward to it unfurling...or unraveling.
  11. ;) Just found this Topic...late for finals, but maybe in time for 'ice-breaker' joke-fest. This is an oldtimer that I like...still find some who haven't heard it. MANLY PURSUITS Amos is sitting on his porch when his new neighbor, John, saunters over. John is looking for somehing to do, and would like to work up a friendship with Amos. John: 'Hey Amos, I hear the trout are biting. Let's go fishing.' Amos: 'Nah. Tried that once...didn't like it.' John: 'Well, the gun club is having a target shoot. Let's try out my new rifle.' Amos: 'Nah. Tried that once...didn't like it.' John: 'Poker game at Harry's tonight.' Amos: 'Nah. Tried that once...didn't like it.' John: 'Bowling?' Amos: 'Nah. Tried that once...didn't like it.' Just then, a little boy came out of the house and jumped into Amos' lap. John: 'Who's this handsome little fella?' Amos: 'My son.' John: 'Your only child?'
  12. :) :D :) Do not think it possible to beat 'When it takes you six attempts to spell "bride"', but I'll offer a few anyway. When you carry a deck of cards even to church...just in case. When you make sure that the cards you carry while swimming are waterproof. When you merely glance at a beauty undressing, while reading 'Bridge World'.
  13. ;) Ah, frothgas, I enjoy verbal sparring, and look forward to happy hours prodding you, so please do continue to 'feed the troll'. (A troll, btw, is often considered to be a bridge-guarder, and since BBO...etc...I might consider the term a compliment, but doubt that you meant to use it as such, eh? Your depiction of me is very lacking: 'crotchety' does not fit, as my friends and acqaintances could assure you (they laugh at you for applying it here); 'old' yes chronologically, but still young at heart; your use of 'idiot' shows that you are desperate, or of limited vocabulary...my IQ of 140-150 must be considerably higher than yours, and I neither babble nor drool, at least not yet. You are definitely a bigot. Reading some of your (all too frequent) posts...truly a masochistical task...shows your considerable intolerance towards the opinions of others, and this is prime bigotry. Your denigration of your betters...e.g. Roland, Ben, Mike...is a bigot's attempt to assert that his position correct, and an admission that you cannot really defend your stance adequately. I AM afflicted with some narrowly defined bigotry (as are most people)...for example... You take issue with my use of 'queer' in reference to male homosexuality. I refuse to use the fine old word 'gay' in describing this perversion. I used to call myself gay...fun, happy-go-lucky...but obviously can no longer do so, else people would think I indulge in unnatural sex acts. I really don't care, and it is no business of mine, what consenting adults do in private...'whatever turns you on'...but become annoyed when they promote their 'cause' in public, and try to get at my tax dollars to boot. ( BTW you can settle a bet by answering the question: Are you queer, or simply strange?...we both assumed the former, but she lost the coin-toss, so is stuck with the less likely choice.) I look forward to more of this fun, but perhaps we should start our own Topic so as not to clutter up this area where others want to discuss more important matters. As for title, I might suggest 'lalislol afflicted with frothgas'...you might prefer something like 'gar bites lalsass'...suggestions?
  14. :D  :D  TO 'the saint': Absolutely hilarious...are you the original author?...How did I miss that, I wonder. What are 'chooons'?...reference to 'tunes' or to tobacco? TO 'robert': If your post was not 'tongue in cheek', please re-read 'the saint's' submission, which was...a few whiffs of nitrous oxide beforehand might help. To Roland: I would not attempt to correct your translation of course...but might suggest that someone better versed in verse would make a smoother rendition. :D
  15. :D TO frothgas: 1) Look up the definition of 'whining'. 2) I'll 'bitch' all I want...especially if it annoys a bigoted azzhole. 3) I think YOU would be happier playing with yourself...take that either way. TO the intelligent one: 1) My comment re length was of course a deliberate exaggeration, as you knew. 2) I have no intention of taking tests or becoming a teacher or a pro...just want to enjoy playing bridge. 3) First time I've heard sayc referred to as 'too complex', especially in light of what I'm exposed to while watching VG, where even the experienced comms are often non-plussed. TO both: 1) I was probably remiss in posting this here...should have sought a platform where 'commoners' are more likely to be found. Will try elsewhere soon...there MUST be a place to find out how average bridge-players view this issue. 2) Yes, I'm an old-timer who would just like to play fun/interesting bridge...my tournament days are long gone...my signature says it all.
  16. :) To 'nonsense' and 'twaddle' I would add 'babble' and 'gobbledegook'. Is there no way we can get a uniform code so that people can play BRIDGE, and not conventions, against each other? Bridge evolved from non-bidding card games, wherein the PLAY was the essence of the game. The change to contract, etc added some spice to the old game...but spices should be used sparingly, as any good chef would inform the unenlightened...one wants to taste the FOOD, not additives. It would be so nice if we could all pick up our cards and get down to it, EVERYONE knowing what the bids mean, without having to memorize volumes of non-conventional conventions. Because I was raised on Goren, I would vote for this fairly natural system, but would compromise on ACOL or SAYC...anything in which I would not have to be referred to p127 of vol2, footnote3 to understand (maybe) 'wot happened?' I realize that this post will not sit well with teachers and pros who earn their livings by promoting this nonsense, but would really love to hear if other 'commoners' share my view...wouldn't you rather just play BRIDGE?
  17. :) Rocks...have been a devout rock-hound for many years...and mine turquoise and opals.
  18. :( re: Roland's #1 Unfortunately no...Goren is dead.
  19. :D :) :D  Mike, I've heard many 'deserted island' stories, but this is one of the best...vwd! Wonder if we'll get more?
  20. I find this argument unacceptable, and must label it 'queer' propaganda. The primary purpose of the natural union (marraige) of a man and a woman, and the privileges/benefits accorded this union, relates to children...the begating and/or adoption of children and the raising of children to responsible adulthood. Society recognizes and applauds this union by granting it these privileges, and bestows certain benefits upon it...often money-related, one way or another... in an effort to reduce the social and financial burden of this beneficial activity. Queers cannot begat children (no matter how hard they try), nor should they be permitted to adopt children (thereby exposing the young to this perversion). So such an unnatural union is not entitled to said privileges/benefits. How they 'get their kicks' in private is their own business, not society's, but they're much better off back in the closet.
  21. <_< September 01, 2006...assuming this Mideast nonsense continues. Wonder if we can persuade Venezuela to become the 51st US state...
  22. ;) Thanks, Frances. Have admonished my keyboard for today's post, and have its promise to stop.
  23. ;) A procedural question: Now that this topic is of no further interest, how does one eliminate it from the Forum? Is the initiator/instigator empowered to do so? Found it easy to start this, but as difficult to stop as a runaway horse. ;) Or do we just keep the 'clutter' forever anon?
  24. Well, alright...Verona has not been a hugh success for the VG audience. How the country which fathered the likes of Da Vinci, Tesla and Fermi (not to mention 'our' Amerigo) cannot handle a seemingly simple internet connection is beyond me, but...c'est la vie as they say in Greece (I think). Unfortunately, Roland takes these glitches to heart as if he were to blame. (Indeed, I believe two of the Walldk's were sulking, not to be seen. :P ) But such is one of the trials and tribulations of even a top-notch organizer, which Roland certainly is, and does not lead to demerits. We all really appreciate your continued efforts to bring us the best in bridge entertainment, Roland. Better luck (or better technicals in Italy) for the rest of the tournament. In any event, I shall not try to get a refund on my money.
  25. ROFL...feel I must add my seven cents worth. (Inflation is REALLY bad.) Trying to envision an athelete with discus in one hand and thirteen cards in the other, or a broad-jumper grunting 'foouur spaaades' in mid-air, leaves me in stitches. BIOAG is my philosophy as posted long ago. Any attempt at making bridge an Olympic sport is ludicrous (to be polite). :P Those trying to do so are delusional or seeking self-aggrandizement. Please do not make bridge a sport...I'm much too lazy for intense physical activity.
